Diner Reviews
  • "I've come numerous times over the years for lunch most of the time. It is always good with a small menu of classic dishes done well. The ambiance is charming and on a warm day, the terrace is very pleasant."

  • "The staff was great with my wife who has a nut/seafood allergy. Really appreciated them checking everything carefully and advising us. Pasta's and apps were all great -- recommend it!"

  • "Great place to have dinner before the show. Downstairs is quieter and cozy."

  • "My family eats here a couple times a year when we are staying in San Francisco. The food is always well prepared; the wine suggestions (many Italian wines) are always thoughtful and well-suited to food; and the service is friendly, professional and attentive. Yes, that is what I want for a dining experience, and that is consistently what greets me at 54 Mint."

  • "Nothing of a WOW factor, but solid good. My hubbys steak was great and my gnocchi were very yummy. we were not blown away but satisfied. Wine room downstairs is awesome!"

  • "toooooo noise and the food was just ok Not coming back. There are several very good italian restaurants in town"

  • "Italian restaurant in quaint quarters...clean and inviting. Excellent food selection...from the common to the uncommon. Service was excellent! Menu offered various enticing entrees....all at my party enjoyed theirs from pasta, to meats to rissoto. Hidden gem."

  • "Waiter was very helpful answering questions and offering suggestions. Wines are all Italian, excellent 'zin' equivalent suggestion by the waiter. Not your typical Italian menu. Split gnocchi gorgonzola entre as appetizer. Oxtail stew was wonderful, as was the sautéed kale......and the chocolate soufflé was amazing. Service was good.....not a place to go if you are in a hurry. We had a very enjoyable 2 hr meal."

  • "While the food was amazing the service was horrible. We had to flag the server for everything. We did not get items ordered fortunately they were not on the bill. The servers seemed very young and stood around talking not paying attention to their customers. There was six of us and after spending over $500.00 you would think there would have been better service. I would like to try again to see if this was just a fluke, but for the cost I am not to eager. Which is very sad as like I said everything we had was wonderful except for the Tiramisu which wasn't that great."

  • "Everything we love with Italian restaurant (great food, generous wine list, warm and friendly atmosphere) with the SF hipster touch (really meant as a compliment, the decor, the young and vibrant vibe). Love it!"

  • "We all loved our dining experience at 54 Mint. My new favorite!"

  • "My sister and I ate here for my birthday because of the lamb shank. However, our experience, and that of most of the other diners, was that we were sitting much too low for the tables. The tables were at our chests for even the men. The chair seats were also too low to the ground to be comfortable. Perhaps this keeps people from dawdling so they can serve more diners but it almost caused us to leave without eating. There should be standards for seat and table heights (most booth seats are too low) as well as seat depths."

  • "Have sent so many people to this place from my office for group dinners and they always love it, but my first experience was a disappointment. We had friends in from Boston and went for dinner on Friday night. The noise level is HIGH, so we had a bit of trouble just having conversation. Service was OK, not great, no real connection and the food was boring. I ordered skirt steak (medium well) with crispy potatoes. Came medium rare. Taste was good but undercooked and just couldn't go there. 4 other orders were pasta - 3 TONNARELLI CACIO e PEPE which is home-made tonnarelli, black pepper, olive oil, pecorino Romano cheese - which was flavorless; 1 gnocchi that was OK. Can't recommend it and won't be back."

  • "great dinner at Mint 54. Have been a couple of other times, but last week the food seemed even better."

  • "Our first time at 54 Mint. We ate in the basement, which has been converted into the wine cellar and tables to seat about 20. It was intimate without feeling crowded. Service was excellent-attentive and there at the right time, without feeling overbearing. Food was wonderful. For appetizers, rustic bread and olives, and grilled octopus (we liked the octopus do much we ordered a second!). Main courses were yummy, complex flavor pastas, terrific fish special with a side of sautéed cauliflower with seasoned breadcrumbs and lamb shank. Only suggestion would be to simmer the lamb shank a little longer to get that "falling off the bone" texture. Chocolate soufflé and coffee for dessert. We will definitely go again!"

  • "My dinner partner liked the gnocchi but I found the tonnarelli too salty, and the service brusque especially given it wasn't crowded. Charming ambience, though."

  • "From the snooty hostess who seated us downstairs in the hot, unattractive basement, to the server who had no personality, the chef who refused to make even a very minor change to a requested dish, and then the inedible carbanara which was so salty it tasted like someone spilled the salt dish in it....This place is a huge NO, must miss."

  • "This restaurant was so loud I could not hear the person sitting next to me talking. The noise was literally painful. The food was only mediocre. The caccio e pepe had white pepper, not black. The fettcine with white truffles had black truffles. The waiter said "Oh, they are from the same family." The white wine pushed on us tasted like turpentine. Th octopus was bland. We gulped our food and escaped."

  • "Went to this place due to its availability on open table. We were absolutely delighted with all aspects of our dining experience. Our waiter and bus boy were very attentive and kind. The food was fresh and delicious. We ordered one of the more reasonable bottles of red wine which turned out to be incredible. What a great experience. We will definitely return soon."

  • "54 Every thing was great except the high noise level"
    Dined on 2/11/2014
  • "Undercooked pasta on two orders ruined good sauce. Erratic pacing of the dishes probably due to a kitchen problem. Basement dining room for large groups and room for children to move around. The basement was a little noisy because of the hard surfaces."

  • "Carbonara is a challenging sauce to make. It involves tempering an egg into the sauce as a thickener. Or, in the case of 54 mint, scrambling it in. We're talking chunks of egg, like someone tossed the pasta with egg salad. But while it's unfortunate if the sauce curdles like that, the more important question is how the chef de cuisine let it get out of kitchen like that."

  • "sensible portions and prices, eclectic wine list, knowledgeable wait staff, and very interesting menu items. Not your usual Italian menu, but using fancy ingredients and unusual combinations to dazzle your tastebuds."

  • "Very good food but WAY too noisy!! once the restaurant filled about halfway, I had a hard time hearing the one person I was having lunch with. And I am not hard of hearing."
    Dined on 1/27/2014
  • "Are two different vibes! My friend and I were disappointed to be sitting downstairs after leaving the energy upstairs so we promptly asked to be seated at he bar instead and as luck would have it, a table opened up upstairs! Much better for our mood. But if you want quiet or are a large group, Downstairs is better! Octopus is one of the best I've had!"

  • "The food was good, but not great. I had the pasta special, but it was only fair. Those who had the halibut said it was okay, but not great. The cauliflower was good. The service left a lot to be desired. All but one of the salads arrived at the same time, and the last one arrived almost 10 minutes later. Entree service was a bit better, but still not efficient."

  • "Excellent food and easy to get a table. Great for business meetings. Went there two days in a row. The fish was wonderful."

  • "Escorted right away to our table in the wine cellar......nice ambience. Soon after a party of ~10 arrived and it got loud. The enclosed space made it very loud.......this distracted our party of 3 and the server, who was courtious, but not as attentive. Meatballs were great. All in all very good, but if your party is small, suggest seating on the main level or outside (depending on the weather)."

  • "The title says it all. Uncomfortable seats - nothing to absorb the sound - concrete floors, etc. Food expensive for what you got. I will not return!"

  • "54 Mint really does "get" the enjoyment of food - Italian food. The service is spot on, friendly, professional, knowledgable. We had the truffle pasta, octopus appetizer, and home made pasta Even though we were in a bit of a rush for a movie the service was perfectly timed and always cordial Great spot!!!"

  • "We went here before a play at the Orpheum. We were seated right away. There was a group of 8 there and it was so noisy. There weren't too many other people there, or it would have been worse. The acoustics make it sound louder. Food was very good. There's a limited menu. The service was good.."

  • "We sat downstairs - what a great room for a meal. Great Italian wine list and very knowledgable staff to describe the wines. Appetizers included olives, sardine and special house made duck proscuitto. The duck was out of this world good. Olives were good and the sardine was ok - a bit fishy. We had a variety of entrees - my advice is stick with the pastas. We had the gnocchi, the carbonara and the papperdelle, as well as the pork and the fish special. Unfortunately I ordered the pork - below average - would not recommend. I did taste all of the pastas and they were delicious. The fish special (swordfish) was also very good. - bottom line - stick with the pastas."

  • "Sharing the same plaza as the Old Mint, and in an old building itself, by going to Mint54 you might as well be in Barcelona! We had a very fine dinner on the bottom floor of the restaurant (not as loud as the ground floor); the food was great (Pizzeta, Pasta Carbonara and a Pear/Ricotta Torte), the service was super nice, the wine was okay, and we really enjoyed being there. Would go again for sure, probably during the day to sit on the nice terrace outside."

  • "The food at this restaurant is worth hunting for a parking place to get there. The very creative menu provides very tasty items, from salads to desserts. The swordfish I had was among the best I've had."

  • "We'd been twice before, food was authentic tasting, good Italian wines, nice feeling about the room. But this time it was so loud ("energetic" is a handy euphemism) that the waiter had to keep asking us to repeat ourselves...and vice versa. As well, he had a bit of an attitude...perhaps he was "off" that night Had to ask for bread after quite a while; when our second plates were delivered, the bread and olive oil were taken away; not good...asked for them back. Also had to ask a couple of times for one of our party's drinks, meals, or coffees. My Cacio e Pepe was made in house and very good...and I think most of the others enjoyed their meals. We'll probably go back sometime, but hopefully the room will be less "energetic.""

  • "Great spot for dinner before a show at the Golden Gate Theater. There were 5 of us. 2 had the specials, Duck and Swordfish. Both were very well prepared - I would have either again. The others ordered pasta dishes. All good. The wine list is short and a bit overpriced. All in all - we had a very nice meal and have added this to the list of places to enjoy dinner before a show!"
