Diner Reviews
  • "They have an amazing staff who all seem to work wonderfully together. "

  • "We were seated right away but, not in our preferred upper level. Seating for two is tight with multiple plates and cups. The pasta with seafood and eggplant was very good with the salad with reasonable portions. The menu has changed and instead of small and large portions it is one price and medium sized. The cappacino was small coffee cup sized - expensive for small portion, would opt for coffee next time. Fun to watch the prom kids in their finery. Service was fine."

  • "Very good Italian fare, the homemade pasta was top notch, salad very fresh. Ambience was great but the server was terrible, he had no personality from start to finish."

  • "My school recently had our prom, and for our dinner my date chose 518 West after hearing good reviews and she was definitely right! The server was very accommodating and allowed us to be seated thirty minutes ahead of the time we had scheduled for our reservation. The ambiance was both fresh and cozy. The food was delicious; rustic italian but at the same time light and refreshing, which is difficult to pull off for sure! Despite this, my date and i were most impressed by one thing; the service. He was friendly, knowledgeable, attentive, and above all, respectful; he treated my date(16) and I(18) like adults, which is a rarity among waitstaff. He treated us just like he would any of his older customers. All in all, great dining experience."

  • "The food was absolutely delectable, I had one of the weekly specials and it was better than I could have imagined. The only issue the entire evening was the lackluster service. The bartender took care of our table and seemed as if she could not have cared less if we were there or not; however the food made up for it all."

  • "Great atmosphere, wonderful service. nice house wine and seafood meals were delicious. Desserts and appetizers were large enough to share"

  • "The new menu is fantastic as well as some of the best from the original. The Crab is the Best. If you have been before it's time for you to put 518 back on your list."

  • "518 West is the perfect spot for dinner after doing the First Friday Art Walk on Glenwood Ave. Good choice of beers and wine complement a wide variety of dishes. Mostly Mediterranean cuisine along with a wood fired stove for little pizzas make this a fun place to meet and eat with friends. The ambiance is quieter now that they have added sound absorbing tiles on the ceiling and carpeting on the floor. The six of us were actually able to carry on a conversation."

  • "Had dinner here with my husband before going to the symphony - food was great - service was prompt! We ate a bit early, so not too crowded, but a very fun place and will definitley go back!"

  • "We ate at 518 to celebrate a birthday and it was perfect. Emily was our server and she could not have been more friendly and helpful but was not at all overbearing. Everyone loved their food choices. One person had a lemon martini and declared it the best ever. Dessert was the perfect ending."

  • "We have been to 518 many times in the past. We have not gone in about a year I would say, and it was not nearly as good as I know it was. I am not sure if it was an off night, or if there is new kitchen staff etc. My husband and I won't be going back anytime soon, I know that. Maybe give them a break and revisit for lunch instead of dinner."

  • "Our meal was excellent and our waiter was patient and extremely helpful."

  • "I highly recommend the crab dip as an appetizer and the crab as your entrée. Ive been three times so far, the service has been great every time."

  • "Really enjoyed our first visit. The only downside was we had a reservation and they knew it was a double birthday celebration, but our table was next to the restrooms outside the main room which was a bummer, but we made the best of it. I would have preferred the pretty main room where the great looking bar and twinkle lights were. Oh well. The crabmeat appetizer on garlic toast points was fabulous. Our seafood and pasta dishes were all really, really good and the service was just the right amount of attentive and friendly and made the meal feel special. They remembered the birthdays with special desserts. We will be back but will make sure to ask to be in the main room. The valet parking was very helpful as well."

  • "Only negative was my baked pasta had prosciutto which was not listed on the menu. I ate around it, but that was the only reason i I did not give them five stars. Service was good and my wifes dish was very good."

  • "518 has several great gluten free options to include gluten free pasta and gluten free pizza. The pizza crust is thin, crisp and delicious."

  • "As expected overall. Not the run of the mill chain Italian restaurant. Freshly made pasta set it apart."

  • "Had a great lunch on a Friday afternoon. Place was almost empty so we had a quiet, pleasant meal. First time I had ravioli and it was great. Everyone else enjoyed their meal as well."

  • "The restaurant was not very busy for a Friday evening. The service was very good. Our dinners were fresh, great and served when we were ready. Desserts were fantastic!"

  • "Tons of ladies in groups dining together so a good place to meet one. Very loud. Menu is lazy. Not enough red sauce dishes for an Italian restaurant. Our waiter used an exhausting vocabulary, trying really hard to sound fancy. Our biggest complaint though was the lame menu choices...felt like a step above The Olive Garden."

  • "We were looking for a good Italian restaurant and were really happy with 518. It's not over-the-top and the prices are very reasonable. The pasta is made in-house and you can tell by how fresh it tastes. We also had great service the entire evening. Overall, this is a great restaurant with a nice ambiance."

  • "Our food was just okay. We were expecting spectacular. The table are a little small for four people to sit comfortably. I don't think we will be going back."

  • "Food was very good. I am from DC and met my parents in Raleigh for the weekend. We knew nothing about town and I book the reservation based on other reviews and the location. I had the butternut squash pizza and tried the hazelnut pesto pasta. Both were delicious. The most memorable part was the service. We arrived about 5 minutes before out reservation and we seated promptly. The waiter, Brandon was very personable and helpful, but not pushy. We stayed at the table quite a while since my parents and I were catching up after not seeing each other for a long time. I felt welcomed to stay as long as we wanted. All in all, a wonderful meal and very pleasant evening."

  • "My wife and I celebrated our 44 th at 518 on Feb. 28. We were seated upstairs in a cozy nook and was attentively served by a very nice young man, named Richie. Our meal started off with complimentary glasses of Champagne, which set the tone of the evening. The service by Richie and the home made pasta was excellent, and my wife and I had a memorable and enjoyable evening at 518. Thank you one and all."

  • "4 people, 4 entrees, 3 were excellent, 1 {the Crab} didn't meet an individual's expectations inspite of being loaded with crab. Service was spot on all night except for one minor issue that was corrected immediately. 518 west is not a dimly lighted, quietly romantic place. It is loud, full {Saturday night} and energetic as one should expect given its location in Raleigh. All things considered, we had a very enjoyable evening and at a price that didn't break the bank. Don't get me wrong, it is not inexpensive but considering the quality of the food, the excellence of the service , and the general "feel of the place" well worth the cost."

  • "We had a wonderful time recently at 518 West with friends. The food was superb. Our one set of friends had never been and they were so thrilled.....said they can't wait to come back. I have always loved this restaurant....been going for years."

  • "The food was bland, and the drink menu was lacking. I got the chicken Marsala, which was not very flavorful. I prefer carabas over this place. I read the reviews and in my opinion it was not up to par."

  • "The service and food was outstanding. I would definitely recommend this place to a friend!"

  • "Great place that is large but has an intimate feeling. Awesome food with reasonable prices. When 3 people can have an appetizer, 3 entrees, a bottle of vino and 2 desserts for $60 ...that is beyond reasonable. And the portions are just right."

  • "Food was very good and service was excellent. They made sure we had everything we wanted while still letting us dine at a leisurely pace on our kids-free evening."

  • "On a busy Saturday night with so many downtown events happening at the same time, 518 West always delivers a warm, friendly, courteous, consistently wonderful experience from the time you walk in until the time you leave. The reception staff is beyond reproach - without exception, as is the wait staff. The chef's accommodations to those of us who are gluten-intolerant are fabulous! We always look forward to our evenings at 518 West as well as 411 and Mez - the BEST Mexican EVER! Thank you, thank you, thank you!"

  • "I often go to 518 West as a lunch venue. This was my first time there for an evening meal. (This was a dinner out with some visiting corporate guests). The food was excellent, and there was a good variety on the menu. The service was very good. (Our waiter was perhaps a little inexperienced, but made up for it in enthusiasm and availability)."

  • "518 West has become our "go to" restaurant when my girlfriend and I have evening plans in downtown Raleigh, such as going to plays and concerts. Everything we've ever ordered from the menu has been superb. Plus, the food portions are so large that we've begun to share a salad and an entree and then leave contently full. We always feel so welcomed at 518 West. To say the least, I highly recommend 518 West for any dining occasion!"

  • "The restaurant was great. We were seated promptly and the food was great. The only problem I had was our server just wasn't as attentive as I would have liked. It took a whole for him to come back to the table after we got our food, and then I had to ask him twice for a refill and he still forgot at first. Still great food and atmosphere and will most likely go back"

  • "I got the frittata and my friend got the blueberry pancakes then we split them since we couldn't make up our minds. Both were very good. There are a couple more items I will try next time I go back like the French Toast which the table next to us ordered. Wait staff very attentive and they knew the menu."
