Diner Reviews
  • "We had a dinner with friends at 51 Lincoln, and were very pleased. The calamari were done very well, flavorful and original, not at all greasy. I had the fabulous Parisian gnocchi, a special of that night, which were delightful, bite-sized puffs sauteed to a goldern perfection, served with a scattering of beans and tomatoes. The best part of the meal was the perfect chocolate cream pie, delicious and fresh tasting, not too heavy and not too sweet. Other people at the table had the salmon and the steak, which they enjoyed very much."

  • "We ordered appetizers and salads and they all came out and got dumped on our table at the same time. Our server was a bit aloof. That being said, the food was good, though, probably a bit overpriced for what it was."

  • "I love food that's seasoned, but this was bordering on too much. I had the special which is 4 courses and $55, and was a lot of food and a good value. The chicken pate and a cheese were tasty for my first course. I had the clams next and while tasty were so salty they were almost inedible. The skate was nice but also bordering on too salty. However, my two friends who ate with me absolutely loved their meals (rigatoni and chicken)."

  • "Had not been here in a while, it's out of my usual driving distance. I remembered the food and service as very good but this was beyond my expectation. My seared scallops (a special) were as good as any I've ever eaten. My date (whose birthday it was) loved her steak. Each side dish, notably a risotto, was prepared with an individual flavor but balanced with the other items on the plate. Simple things like bread and salad were prepared with the same care as the main courses. The service was attentive, courteous, friendly, excellent. The wine list limited but very well sourced. The most memorable meal I've had in at least a year. The birthday lady, who is very particular, was delighted. I will go back soon."

  • "Food was good. For a high priced restaurant, The waiter did not really know how to properly explain the menu items and how to properly serve the wine, in my opinion."

  • "The food is very good. My duck was delicious! We found one of the dishes too salty, however. The wait staff was lovely and experienced. It is a great neighborhood restaurant and hope it stays around for a long time!"

  • "We were never rushed, could take our time choosing from the menu. Used to have vegetarian options, which I miss."

  • "I wish my neighborhood - alright let's be generous - every neighborhood could be blessed with options like 51 Lincoln. I've been here numerous times - date night with the wife, family dinner with kids, taking (95 y.o.) Mom out for a special occasion (ask to sit in the wine-cellar for a quiet space) - and everyone has always been delighted. The food is reliably good and creative. By which I do not mean tortured as in so many "try-hard" kitchens these days. Service is correct and friendly. Neither snobby nor obsequious. Drinks are enjoyable. I haven't had to go to the bar and teach them how to make my drink - which happens, or at least should happen - in too many places. I travel 30 minutes to get to this place. Repeatedly."

  • "51 Lincoln is a gem. Great food and attentive service that we used to have to drive into Boston for. High concept, exciting food without a pretentious atmosphere. GREAT COCKTAILS. "

  • "I made a reservation for our 33rd wedding anniversary and wanted to go someplace special, so we picked 51 Lincoln, which had been great the other times we have gone there. This night did not start well, when they seated us in the basement. (Who knew they HAD a basement for seating?) We complained, and the only option was a table in the bar right next to the door. So, after making a reservation a few weeks in advance, we ended up sitting at the bar, which is not all bad, since we often do by choice. But then the food was just average, well below our expectations. The "spicy" crab had no spice. The free dessert for our anniversary was a nice touch, but it was too late by then."

  • "Food was delicious, and service was very good. But it was too loud. I don't think I would go back in main dinner hour, but maybe either quite early or late in the evening. (or at lunchtime)"

  • "Love their oysters and the Month of May Soft-Shelled Crabs!"

  • "We went to 51 Lincoln for the first time based on multiple recommendations from friends. We both tried the tasting menu and I chose the wine pairing as well. Each choice was excellently prepared, though I must say that by the time desert came around we were both stuffed and couldn't finish them (though we wanted to). The wine pairings were excellent and complemented the dishes quite well. My favorite for the evening was their special appetizer - soft shell crab ravioli - absolutely delicious. Highly recommended, while not a cheap meal, was worth the price. "

  • "My friend and I went to 51 Lincoln specifically because it was "soft-shall crab month." We were disappointed that only one selection was available each day. She declined the crab with ramen noodles, and ordered the duck, which was quite good, although she said it wasa bit salty.. However, I ordered the crabs as an entree and was extremely disappointed: the breading was bland and so heavy that I couldn't really taste the crab. It was more like tempura with ramen noodle soup, also not very interesting. This was not how it was described; in most places , one can see the shape of the soft-shelled crab, round and luscious. On the other hand, the calamari with squid ink aioli was delicious, and the bread with a chili jam was tasty. "

  • "On the positive the food is very good. The portions small and prices high. My wife asked to substitute the mashed potatoes for another vegetable and they said there would be an additional charge. We sat downstairs which is essentially a windowless basement. "

  • "51 Lincoln seems to be trying a little too hard and that may get in the way. This is literally the case with the wine-bottled covered bench in the middle of one room which seems to crowd the tables. The menus etc are all on the same clipboards which are awkward to handle and appear to confuse the servers since we had no wine list initially and later got a repeat of the main menu instead of a dessert menu. An excellent beer list was spoiled by absence of any draft and the odd division by size of bottle i.e. pints. A green salad looked like torn iceberg (scarcely "our best") with no sign of the promised dressing but the calamari was outstanding. My meal was served without most of the listed sides but the others in the party were very happy."

  • "51 Lincoln has wonderful food, much finer than the last Globe review said. Delicate flavors, great salads and pates, fish and pork. I like the flowers on the table and the long divider table. However, dinner was very slow coming so I think you have to warn your server to avoid waiting."

  • "We went here for dinner on a recommendation and what a wonderful experience. The service was excellent - attentive but not overbearing. The food was absolutely superb - but the dessert was just okay (hence the 4 stars for food)… the best bolognese sauce I have ever had - rivals my favorite bolognese at a terrific restaurant in Napa. The chicken was perfect - the cheeses were delicious - even the bread was divine. We ordered the vanilla bean ice cream for dessert and it was watery and flavorless. Other than that, this restaurant is a true gem and I highly recommend. Worth every penny. "

  • "I went for my birthday with my wife and adult children because I had heard about the soft shell crab focus during May. We were not disappointed! There were other tremendous apps and entrees on the menu and an awesome daily special list as well. Food was excellent and staff very friendly and knowledgeable. We had been once before but it has been a long time since then. I will make a point of going back much sooner now! Oh, and the bat tender and cocktails were way above the norm. They have a serious mixologist who knows his stuff."

  • "51's new menu approach adds vibrancy and having the wine cart in the center of the restaurant quickens wine delivery (a problem in the past). No polenta fries though is a big issue!"

  • "We went for the softshell crab menu, as we did last year, but there were no more softshell crabs left for our 8pm seating. The menu choices that remained for us were not very inspiring. The dinner was just OK."

  • "The menu is limited but pretty well done and balanced. I was hoping for a more punched rendition of soft shelled crabs entree since it was billed with habanero and étouffée so that meant real attitude. It was pretty tame. The vanilla ice realm made in house belled with Madagascar vanilla was also really without character. But nice try. I think they just are pretty average and no risk cooks. "

  • "We rarely bother to dine out, but we can't resist the annual soft shell crab celebration..Each day of May there's a different crab dish, so we try to go a couple of times during the month. Noise level was overwhelming on this particular night, so our server took great lengths to accommodate and found a secluded place where we could enjoy our conversation as well as the food. The chef employs very creative, unusual, but thoroughly successful blends of flavors and tastes in both the crab dish and the dessert. A memorable evening on all accounts."

  • "We live in Chestnut Hill and this is one of our favorite go to fine dining spots. The food is always outstanding, freshly & perfectly prepared & oh so delicious. The ambiance is warm and intimate, perfect for a romantic dinner for 2 or a dinner with friends. We had the duck, Cauliflower steak, fluke and bolognese pasta. All were scrumptious. The service is generally good although this particular night our waitress forgot to bring our salads. Once we brought the oversight to their attention, our salads were quickly delivered. Particularly delicious was the deconstructed Caesar salad. The food quality is so wonderful that we are willing to overlook the small service faux paus we experienced, especially since the restaurant was full."

  • "We're locals who've been to this restaurant several times. Several dishes were disappointing- caesar salad with mustard based dressing (?) , oyster appetizer made mostly of starch and sauce, good minestrone soup, small portion for a duck entree. For a$50 meal I expected better food- "

  • "Food is good but many dishes have some eccentric component that leaves you thinking "they're trying to be creative but I don't think it really goes." The main dining area is open and lively but if they put you in the small basement you'll feel like you're ... eating in the basement, and staff will be coming in to get stuff from the storage cabinets. "

  • "Hello we decided to go to Lincoln Street after our our dinner choice did not accept reservations at 7 p.m. - the only tie we could go. We had been at Lincoln Streets a few times before - and had been a bit tired of the menu. But we were both very surprised about the new menu not only was it presented in a very nice manner - it was also most delicious. The new risotto was outstanding as were the other appetizers. My husbands main course was also great ( but I cannot remember exactly what is was) The dessert was also very nice and not just "a big block of chocolate decorated with some sauce." I also liked the new decorations - a somewhat dark wall with many unframed drawings. The prices were actually reasonable- we will be back."

  • "Utterly delicious food! Inventive, creative, yummy, and memorable tastes. Here's the only problem: the portions are tiny! What you get is astonishingly good, but what you get is a very small portion. Quality matters more than quantity, but it's odd to feel that you could have eaten more when a meal is done."

  • "Fifty-0ne (51) is a restaurant that provides a diverse choice within a limited menu. The Open Table concept is a good one and we enjoyed this style of dining. There will be however, when a la carte would work better for our dining needs. In those instances, perhaps al la carte could provide a little more food for the patron."

  • "Salad had tasty dressing but over-priced at $10 for just greens. Meals were good but not outstanding for the price and the small portion. Dessert menu not interesting. We've been there before and had better meals."

  • "Overall it was a good experience. However, I do have some major points I'd like to bring across that I think would be nice if you worked on: 1. Please make sure when the main meal arrives that your dinner guests already have the wine. We were almost half way through our main meal before our wine arrived. That was very annoying. 2. When the main meal arrived, my husband didn't have a knife. Again, quite annoying. 3. May I suggest instead of english garden peas (for my sea scallop dish) you use petit pois instead. Tastes much better. 4. Finally, the wine list is not great. I tasted 3 different chardonnays. Maybe I might be very picky... however, either they tasted too buttery or of very little. Just my thoughts. Thank you. Dr. Norstrand"
