501 Zingari is an exquisite Italian jewel nestled one block away from Union Square in the heart of San Francisco's Theatre District. Zingari moved into the neighborhood in 1995. Staying true to the meaning of its name Zingari, which means Gypsy, it features rustic and fresh dishes and cuisines from many different country side regions of Italy.

In the lounge you will find live jazz from both local and traveling Jazz artists. Throughout the year you will find wine maker dinners that bring wine country to the restaurant, thus giving its patrons a chance to enjoy the best of the Bay Area, as well as Italy.   • "501 Zingari was a pleasant surprise that I discovered using Opentable. The food and service was excellent but the environment was a bit too noisy and the facility is a bit cramped. The mushroom soup was an outstanding appetizer and the seafood risotto was excellent. The risotto was properly cooked and was very flavorful. I highly recommend this Union Square gem. I will definitely return the next time I am in the City."

The dining room looks onto the street and connects with the city, the prix fixe menu for $30 had many appealing items, we found a reasonably priced Italian wine... we were set! The service was friendly, knowledgable, and it was quiet enough that we could talk... hard to find these days..."

We didnt expect that so it made it difficult to speak to each other. If you are looking for entertainment over dinner then you will get it. We wanted to enjoy our conversations and it was difficult given the noise level."

  • "Ate at Zingari's last week before a show at ACT and we had a great dinner! This week went back to Zingari's because we were in the neighborhood for another show. Had the same Antipasti of Mozzarella Al Forno, it was great last week and this week was disappointing! Someone in the kitchen didn't read the description the menu had! My pork stuffed with spinach and cheese was bland, my friends gnocchi con gamberi was ok. I'll give it a third try in a few weeks."

The food was incredible the flavors were exquisite and presentation was absolutely beautiful. The ambiance was lovely as well. There was a piano player playing melodies when we arrived and about halfway through our dinner a man joined him singing. His voice was great and the music was soft and perfect for the atmosphere. We had dessert and the tiramisu was the best I have ever had, please don't tell my Nona. So light and delicate as it is supposed to be. My boyfriend and I stayed after we ate and enjoyed the music a little longer. Beautiful and perfect for all ages. Romantic and overall stunning!"

The food was excellent in taste and presentation. Got forgotten by the waitstaff a few times, but could put up with that since we had plenty of time before the show we were attending. Would have been put off if we had had no other plans that night. Will go again for food and ambience!"

Food had good flavor although the veal was just overlooked and the porkchop dry in the center. We were seated close to where the lounge singer performed and she was quite good with an excellent repertoire. Worth coming once. "

  • "We decided last-minute to see a show in the Union Square area so were limited in restaurant availability. I needed one in close walking distance to the theater for my 85 year old father. The staff was nice, relatively attentive. The atmosphere tired and cheap (the menus had food stains on them). The food was disappointing. Zucchini soup had so much pepper that we couldn't taste the zucchini. I had wild boar osso bucco with risotto, which was bland and soggy rice. The the only good thing was location being near our theater. Hopefully in the future I'll have enough notice to get into a good restaurant. Would only recommend this is you have no other better options, and then order just a few of the antipasti."

  • "You can't beat the location - right off Union Square in San Francisco. Food is excellent! Love the Penne with Chicken, the ravioli, and the Risotto. Service is Old World impeccable. If you can get a reservation in the Jazz Lounge, have dinner there. Or go in for a cocktail or a late night coffee. They have great live music six nights a week, and not so loud that you can't have a conversation. Very classy place."

  • "Went for Valentines dinner. There was suppose to be music that could be heard while dining but since we were put in a room because of overbooking we could not hear the music. The waiter was new and could not do anything right. It was not advertised at the website that they had a set 3 course menu that was limited but also overpriced for the quality of food. My wife swears her garlic mashed was imitation and the broccoli was frozen. I had lobster ravioli that was no better than the Olive Garden. Never again;("

The Husband took us for the prix fixed Valentine dinner and I got to give him snaps for the effort, however, hands down (and I am not kidding here...), this was the worst service, the most inedible food, and the most elitist and self entitled concierge/owner? certainly in the city, possibly the state. By the end of the evening it had become a ridiculous joke with every taste of food more horrible than the previous! Set menu included champagne and a rose…never saw a rose, champagne came after we paid the $200 bill and left the table. It is always such a shame to see a place with real potential, sabotage itself, Zingari, its past time to bring your A game. Go back to 'restaurant school' and learn how to run one."

After a couple bites of aour appetizer we wished we hadn't ordered our entree's. We literally took 2 bites of our entree's and asked for our check.   • "I didn't mind waiting 30 minutes even though I had a reservation. What I did mind was that the table they prepared for my party was located right next to a very large and loud group! I chose to wait more for a table in a quieter section of the restaurant. When my party was finally seated, the serving staff brought bread and butter to our table. All other tables next to mine were given olive oil and balsamic vinegar, instead. I had to ask for olive oil and balsamic vinegar three times before I was finally given. Since the table was so small, I asked the butter dish be taken away to create more room and that request was also repeated three times before I finally put the butter dish on a passing waiter's tray!"

  • "Our first time dining here. Reserved table for 4 adults, which was promptly accommodated. 1st impression upon entry as the heavy smell of fish, in a VERY warm/stuffy restaurant. Seated in a very dark corner, so dark we had to use our cell phones to light up the menus in order to read them. We ordered some salads which were fresh, simple & delicious. The prosciutto apps were also delish. For dinner we ordered the filets, chicken penne pasta, wine and beer. The dishes were good, but nothing notable. The chicken was overcooked & flavorless, the pasta sauce was tasty; filet was fine. Our bill was $255. Overall, absurdly overpriced for what you get. Service was fantastic. We were more than ready to leave as the stuffiness was too much to endure."

  • "This is a white table cloth restaurant with an atmosphere to match in an uncrowded space. The cuisine is mostly but not exclusively Italian inspired. I had the soup ($12) and a lower priced pasta entree ($22). Specials of the day cost $38. My pasta based dish was very tasty, and well worth the price. The service was among the best--better than I've experienced at much pricier restaurants. There are no bus boys or waiter's helpers. Thus, more personal and attentive service."
