A word from 501 Zingari
501 Zingari is an exquisite Italian jewel nestled one block away from Union Square in the heart of San Francisco's Theatre District. Zingari moved into the neighborhood in 1995. Staying true to the meaning of its name Zingari, which means Gypsy, it features rustic and fresh dishes and cuisines from many different country side regions of Italy.

In the lounge you will find live jazz from both local and traveling Jazz artists. Throughout the year you will find wine maker dinners that bring wine country to the restaurant, thus giving its patrons a chance to enjoy the best of the Bay Area, as well as Italy. Zingari continues to be a special place where people come to enjoy great food that is unpretentious, in an ambiance that is warm and exciting, with service that is friendly and professional, and music that keeps you a little longer than they had anticipated – experience you can toast to.Please keep visiting our web site for seasonal specials.

Diner Reviews
  • "The food was good - good specials. The service was average. The noise level was loud. The waiter was loud. The privacy at our table was not existent - not romantic in the least."

  • "Love zingari. Great staff with humor and warmth. Pastas with perfection. But hold on! Ordered a cheese plate as dessert - ritz crackers with some hunks of Raley's cheese. Come on Zingari - you're better than that!"

  • "The food was very good. Ordered the wild boar osso bucco and the gnocchi. The atmosphere is very small and intimate. Excellent service."

  • "Great food and service in an intimate, elegant setting with live music, 364 days of the year. What's not to like?"

  • "The wild boar ossobucco was outstanding. Service and ambience were excellent. Don't let the fact that it is in a hotel deter you."

  • "The food was so-so (esp. for the prices) and the service was too intrusive. This also appears to be one of those "Italian" restaurants where there is not an Italian to be seen. It makes a difference. One wonders if the Chef, at least, was Italian or studied in Italy. I seriously doubt it."

  • "Very nice, with attentive but not obtrusive service."

  • "We spent $120 per person and the food was so bad. Ahi Tuna on the appetizer was smelly. The main course Chicken was rubbery. I do not recommend this place to anyone."

  • "501 Zingari was a pleasant surprise that I discovered using Opentable. The food and service was excellent but the environment was a bit too noisy and the facility is a bit cramped. The mushroom soup was an outstanding appetizer and the seafood risotto was excellent. The risotto was properly cooked and was very flavorful. I highly recommend this Union Square gem. I will definitely return the next time I am in the City."

  • "We were at the Tonga Room at the Fairmont but were interested in more, uh, serious, dining on a busy Saturday night and found a reservation here on Open Table. The dining room looks onto the street and connects with the city, the prix fixe menu for $30 had many appealing items, we found a reasonably priced Italian wine... we were set! The service was friendly, knowledgable, and it was quiet enough that we could talk... hard to find these days..."

  • "Predictably outstanding in all aspects, as usual, as well as reasonably priced for the location."

  • "The experience was simply average. Rock shrimp were not rock shrimp. Food was average overall. Very small restaurant with only a few tables. Thus I understand why they charge to cancel your reservation. The service was excellent."

  • "This was my second time here. I had a great experience for lunch which made me go back with a group for dinner. The service was slow, food was ok, but the piano and singer were loud. We didnt expect that so it made it difficult to speak to each other. If you are looking for entertainment over dinner then you will get it. We wanted to enjoy our conversations and it was difficult given the noise level."

  • "Ate at Zingari's last week before a show at ACT and we had a great dinner! This week went back to Zingari's because we were in the neighborhood for another show. Had the same Antipasti of Mozzarella Al Forno, it was great last week and this week was disappointing! Someone in the kitchen didn't read the description the menu had! My pork stuffed with spinach and cheese was bland, my friends gnocchi con gamberi was ok. I'll give it a third try in a few weeks."

  • "I went here this week while in town for a convention. I took a good client to dinner and there were four of us. we had no idea that there was a singer. the singer w/band was loud and hard to have a conversation. i would go here on a date but not if i wanted to talk"

  • "From the moment you arrive you're treated like family - very attentively. The calamari was very fresh and the lobster ravioli special with large and small shrimp in an herb blend marinara sauce was very good. Stefano and his staff did an excellent job."

  • "Warmly greeted by the host and server, Leon. Food and service were outstanding. The crab cakes were delicious and the penne con pollo perfect."

  • "The whole experience was unforgettable. The service was very attentive and the staff was very knowledgeable and kind. The food was incredible the flavors were exquisite and presentation was absolutely beautiful. The ambiance was lovely as well. There was a piano player playing melodies when we arrived and about halfway through our dinner a man joined him singing. His voice was great and the music was soft and perfect for the atmosphere. We had dessert and the tiramisu was the best I have ever had, please don't tell my Nona. So light and delicate as it is supposed to be. My boyfriend and I stayed after we ate and enjoyed the music a little longer. Beautiful and perfect for all ages. Romantic and overall stunning!"

  • "First time at Zingari's, which is in the Donatello Hotel one block from both ACT and Curran Theaters. Enjoyed the layout of the restaurant on different floors and the piano bar. The food was excellent in taste and presentation. Got forgotten by the waitstaff a few times, but could put up with that since we had plenty of time before the show we were attending. Would have been put off if we had had no other plans that night. Will go again for food and ambience!"

  • "My wife and I have been to Zingari several times. We had an important business dinner and chose Zingari based on our past dinning experiences. We asked for a quiet table when we made the reservation. They totally took care of us from the memo net that we stepped into the restaurant. The staff was very attentive and all of us enjoyed the food. The table they picked for us was perfect for the discussion that we were having."

  • " Whether it is before the theatre or post show drink in the jazz lounge, Zingari is the hidden gem of San Francisco."

  • "Stefano was great in attending to our needs. The crab cakes were amazing. The crab flesh had real texture rather than getting minced into a paste like in other places. Recommend the Lemoncello digestif at the end. Perfect end to a wonderful dinner. Krishan runs a wonderful place. "

  • "The first impression is they know what they're doing. Greeting was warm and server was very attentive, almost too much so. We had veal and pork chop. Food had good flavor although the veal was just overlooked and the porkchop dry in the center. We were seated close to where the lounge singer performed and she was quite good with an excellent repertoire. Worth coming once. "

  • "My wife had the Osso Buco and I had the Spaghetti and Meatball Special. They were both very good. Raj was our waiter and did a great job. We will be back!"

  • "My brother and I had a wonderful dinner last Tuesday at Zingari. The host, waiter and busboy were all very friendly and cheerful. Stefano, our waiter, was knowledgeable about the wine and the food - and everything was top notch. He even split the appetizer without our asking - a nice surprise. I would highly recommend and return. "

  • "We decided last-minute to see a show in the Union Square area so were limited in restaurant availability. I needed one in close walking distance to the theater for my 85 year old father. The staff was nice, relatively attentive. The atmosphere tired and cheap (the menus had food stains on them). The food was disappointing. Zucchini soup had so much pepper that we couldn't taste the zucchini. I had wild boar osso bucco with risotto, which was bland and soggy rice. The the only good thing was location being near our theater. Hopefully in the future I'll have enough notice to get into a good restaurant. Would only recommend this is you have no other better options, and then order just a few of the antipasti."

  • "The food was just fair and the prices were way too high. $35.00 for corkage is outrageous today. "

  • "We dined at Zingari for a birthday celebration for my partner. The burrata salad was awesome, as were the pasta dishes and creme brulee (with a birthday candle on the side!). The bread was wonderful and the service spot on. A wonderful evening all around."

  • "Skip it. There are so many great italian restaurants in this city. This is not one of them. The service is excellent The fried calamari is very good The bread is not good The pizza is terrible. Looks like it came out of a box The ravioli could have been good if it was cooked The veal saltimboca was over cooked. The mashed potatoes were elementary The spinach was over cooked"

  • "You can't beat the location - right off Union Square in San Francisco. Food is excellent! Love the Penne with Chicken, the ravioli, and the Risotto. Service is Old World impeccable. If you can get a reservation in the Jazz Lounge, have dinner there. Or go in for a cocktail or a late night coffee. They have great live music six nights a week, and not so loud that you can't have a conversation. Very classy place."
