A word from 501 Zingari
501 Zingari is an exquisite Italian jewel nestled one block away from Union Square in the heart of San Francisco's Theatre District. Zingari moved into the neighborhood in 1995. Staying true to the meaning of its name Zingari, which means Gypsy, it features rustic and fresh dishes and cuisines from many different country side regions of Italy.

In the lounge you will find live jazz from both local and traveling Jazz artists. Throughout the year you will find wine maker dinners that bring wine country to the restaurant, thus giving its patrons a chance to enjoy the best of the Bay Area, as well as Italy. Zingari continues to be a special place where people come to enjoy great food that is unpretentious, in an ambiance that is warm and exciting, with service that is friendly and professional, and music that keeps you a little longer than they had anticipated – experience you can toast to.Please keep visiting our web site for seasonal specials.

  • "Food was better than expected, service was competent, non-intrusive and friendly. A good choice particularly when staying at the Donatello. Will definitely return."

  • "Skip it. There are so many great italian restaurants in this city. This is not one of them. The service is excellent The fried calamari is very good The bread is not good The pizza is terrible. Looks like it came out of a box The ravioli could have been good if it was cooked The veal saltimboca was over cooked. The mashed potatoes were elementary The spinach was over cooked"

  • "You can't beat the location - right off Union Square in San Francisco. Food is excellent! Love the Penne with Chicken, the ravioli, and the Risotto. Service is Old World impeccable. If you can get a reservation in the Jazz Lounge, have dinner there. Or go in for a cocktail or a late night coffee. They have great live music six nights a week, and not so loud that you can't have a conversation. Very classy place."

  • "Went for Valentines dinner. There was suppose to be music that could be heard while dining but since we were put in a room because of overbooking we could not hear the music. The waiter was new and could not do anything right. It was not advertised at the website that they had a set 3 course menu that was limited but also overpriced for the quality of food. My wife swears her garlic mashed was imitation and the broccoli was frozen. I had lobster ravioli that was no better than the Olive Garden. Never again;("

  • "What a pathetic sad place. The Husband took us for the prix fixed Valentine dinner and I got to give him snaps for the effort, however, hands down (and I am not kidding here...), this was the worst service, the most inedible food, and the most elitist and self entitled concierge/owner? certainly in the city, possibly the state. By the end of the evening it had become a ridiculous joke with every taste of food more horrible than the previous! Set menu included champagne and a rose…never saw a rose, champagne came after we paid the $200 bill and left the table. It is always such a shame to see a place with real potential, sabotage itself, Zingari, its past time to bring your A game. Go back to 'restaurant school' and learn how to run one."

  • "It just wasn't a good experience. The staff was nice enough, but the food was something to be desired. It simply was lacking all the way around. After a couple bites of aour appetizer we wished we hadn't ordered our entree's. We literally took 2 bites of our entree's and asked for our check. We honestly felt bad, the people who ran the restaurant from the host, to the wait staff were very nice :(."

  • "I didn't mind waiting 30 minutes even though I had a reservation. What I did mind was that the table they prepared for my party was located right next to a very large and loud group! I chose to wait more for a table in a quieter section of the restaurant. When my party was finally seated, the serving staff brought bread and butter to our table. All other tables next to mine were given olive oil and balsamic vinegar, instead. I had to ask for olive oil and balsamic vinegar three times before I was finally given. Since the table was so small, I asked the butter dish be taken away to create more room and that request was also repeated three times before I finally put the butter dish on a passing waiter's tray!"

  • "I dined here for Dine About Town and was very pleased. It was a birthday lunch, and the waiter was especially gracious. The food was delicious."

  • "Our first time dining here. Reserved table for 4 adults, which was promptly accommodated. 1st impression upon entry as the heavy smell of fish, in a VERY warm/stuffy restaurant. Seated in a very dark corner, so dark we had to use our cell phones to light up the menus in order to read them. We ordered some salads which were fresh, simple & delicious. The prosciutto apps were also delish. For dinner we ordered the filets, chicken penne pasta, wine and beer. The dishes were good, but nothing notable. The chicken was overcooked & flavorless, the pasta sauce was tasty; filet was fine. Our bill was $255. Overall, absurdly overpriced for what you get. Service was fantastic. We were more than ready to leave as the stuffiness was too much to endure."

  • "This is a white table cloth restaurant with an atmosphere to match in an uncrowded space. The cuisine is mostly but not exclusively Italian inspired. I had the soup ($12) and a lower priced pasta entree ($22). Specials of the day cost $38. My pasta based dish was very tasty, and well worth the price. The service was among the best--better than I've experienced at much pricier restaurants. There are no bus boys or waiter's helpers. Thus, more personal and attentive service."

  • "Server connected with us about the show we were going to see versus just taking our order and he made some good recommendations. Food turned out wonderful. I'd recommend. You can also go to the bar for happy hour till 630 and get half price apps to start off with then head over for the meal."

  • "We wound up being a group of 8. The waiter was very personable, and also very knowledgeable about all the selections. Very Italian. If we are back in SFO again, I will definitely go back to this restaurant."

  • "My husband and I were looking for a quiet dinner and excellent food. Definitely some of the best Italian we've ever had! Our waiter was attentive and knowledgable and wine he paired for us was excellent. Place didn't feel touristy; very intimate. We will definitely return."

  • "We had a fixed price 3 course menu Christmas Day which came to over $200. A bit on the pricey side for moderate portions. The food was good but I was disappointed with the Saltimbocca as it had cheese on it which overpowered it and it is not something you see in Italy. The restaurant was busy and so there was quite a wait even though we had a reservation. The one thing we did not like is that we were put in the lounge area where there was a singer and piano player. The music was too loud . Although the singer had a nice voice, she was asking the diners for requests and it felt like being in a bar & not a restaurant. We would give it a recommendation but not a rave! Perhaps on a night other than Christmas we would have upped the review."

  • "Ziingari is a very pleasant find, friendly service however very efficient and organized. They located in a Hotel on Post and Mason, very convenient to Theaters and night life, also shopping and Union Square, Open very late for dinner with reservations"

  • "Very basic of service. Fish special was overcooked/dry. Never asked if we wanted coffee or dessert -just brought the bill. MANY other choices by Union Square, let alone the city."

  • "Location of dining room is a fairly narrow and small, with a full place its VERY noisy. The food is pretty solid, the quality of my filet Mignon was top notch. I ordered my dessert then was told they are out. Service was attentive for most of the meal but it bothered me that the waiter disappeared to eat his dinner a couple of tables over. There are more interesting places to go in the City. I think this place is overrated"

  • "Went to OpenTable to find a restaurant open on Christmas Day in Union Sq. Thought my friends were going to have a light lunch, maybe pizza or pasta, then off to a movie, but no. It was a set $70 menu; on a budget and put a deposit on the lunch so was stuck here. Host said their website clearly stated the set menu which I didn't see. I just saw the lunch menu. Clearly wasn't worth the $70 for an appetizer, main, and dessert; it shouldn't have been more than $50. And, not to include coffee or a glass of champagne. So, this influenced this meal. Just thought thought of a $450 meal; money that could have been used more wisely. Desserts were excellent. Food was very good. Lamb chops tough and sent it back. Decor OK."

  • "Had Christmas Eve dinner. Expected a more quiet experience jarred by a loud and not very talented jazz duo. The food was good. Wife had the filet that came with an excellent sauce. I had scallops sautéed with two kinds of beets and other vegetables - delicious."

  • "Our waiter was wonderful, we had a wonderful diner and he made a special desert! Enjoyed Holiday music in the bar after Looking at the Christmas tree! It had a wonderful ambience for the holidays and all the staff was great!"

  • "Not sure what we were expecting, but this is not a restaurant you want to go to if you are a San Franciscan. Mostly tourist fare."
    Dined on 12/21/2013
  • "Over priced for extremely small portions! We left this Italian restaurant HUNGRY! That's not supposed to happen. I had a full entry that wasn't enough food for a six year old!"

  • "I had tickets for an early show so arrived at 5:00 thinking I would be able to have a leisurely meal and have plenty of time. We were seated quickly and the dining room was empty. We were informed that there was a party (37) coming, so we should order quckly to get ahead of them. Our drinks arrived promptly and I ordered the Oso Bucco, which was very tasty and nicely presented. Fettucini and Linguini as well as the seafood ravioli were good too. For dessert, we had tiramisu and the cheese plate which was fine if a bit pedestrian with brie, gouda, blue cheese and provolone. I would have hoped for better cheeses and perhaps fewer pieces. Overall, I will likely go again and hope that they dont have a huge group to contend with next time."

  • "Excellent food and service, as usual. Our server, Stefano, was his usual gracious and professional self making the extra wait for the main course tolerable on a very busy night. A good wine list but rather pricy."
    Dined on 12/14/2013
  • "Our table was next to a larger group of diners which had a chair backed up to ours. Wait staff service a bit slow to refill water glasses and dint bother to come by with coffee top off with dessert."

  • "We sat in the lounge and listened to music while we had dinner. Very small and quaint. We had a great time."

  • "My wife and I were in San Francisco for the weekend. We used Open Table for other restaurant choices and were very satisfied with the recommendations that were offered and the reviews written.Based on our previous experiences we booked this restaurant. What a disappointment. It was supposed to be a taste of Italy in San Francisco. It was no where near the Italian food. If McDonald's did Italian food it would be better than here. Worst $$ spent!!"

  • "We arrived a little early for our 7:30 appointment, was told we would be seated by 7:40, however the restaurant was very busy & they were having a hard time seating people on time (heard some waits were an hour). We were finally seated about 40 minutes later at a small cocktail table against a wall. Our waiter was not attentive, didn't advise the specials (we had to ask). The food was just ok. I think we would have enjoyed our food more had we not been upset about the other issues"

  • "Excellent food and outstanding service. Stephan was particularly helpful and friendly. A smaller menu and not family style. Several interesting dishes including tagliatelle with beef which was quite good. A very nice potato soup and mixed green salad as starters and then pasta for our main courses. The bread was fresh, warm and served with fresh olive oil and a nice balsamic vinegar. The bar was hosting a holiday private function so the noise level was probably a little more than usual."

  • "As others have noted - waitstaff is very attentive (Stefano in particular). They gave me enough time to eat, but once I was done, dishes disappeared quickly. The sea bass (a special) was good, sauce was tasty -- some might find it a touch on the salty side, but for me it was flavorful. The polenta starter (mushrooms, caramelized onions, asiago) actually could have used a little more salt, but otherwise wasn't bad. There is live music each night; and a small dining area across from the bar where you are in close proximity to the performers -- the night I was there the female vocalist and piano accompanist were delightful. An unexpected find -- not sure I'd travel across town, but worth stopping by if you are in the neighborhood."
