Diner Reviews
  • "5 Napkin had been a neighborhood favorite. Last nite our experience changed that. We waited over 45 minutes for food and when it came, they brought the wrong items and everyone's food was cold. A chicken sandwich ended up being chicken fingers and a salad came with no dressing. We were not the only table that received this service. They obviously have a major problem in their kitchen, but no manager ever came by to explain the situation or apologize. Avoid!!!!!"

  • "Frequented this and the Chelsea location when I was an NYC resident so it was nice to take friends there for their first time on a special trip back into the city! It was a miserable rainy day outside and there was a slight leak on our table, but the staff comped us drinks & desert, which more than made up for it! The food is as always, amazing and the place is always buzzing!"

  • "They do the simple stuff to perfection. Go for the burgers, fries and beer. They have the food and service down to a science. Don't stray too far. I had the mahi-mahi sandwich once, and it was great. I had it a second time, not so great (dry and tasteless). Everybody else ordered burgers and they all were in heaven. Oh, if you choose salad instead of fries, the salad is good - crisp and delicately seasoned."

  • "We've had lots of veggie burgers at lots of places -- they are obligatory on menus now. These are by far the best we've ever had. They are made with beets, and this makes them really juicy and flavorful. The 5N sauce is just right, and the shoestring fries (or try the sweet potato fries) are a great accompaniment. The atmosphere is warm, cozy, friendly. We love to come here right before a movie across the street."

  • "My Girlfriend and I dined at 5 Napkin's upper west side location for the first time this past Saturday and were delightfully satisfied with their awesome burgers. I had to wipe my hands after each and every bite, it was so juicy. I also opted for a side of the tomato and avocado salad instead of the fries and left that place feeling not an ounce of guilt. I totally recommend 5 Napkins to any and all burger fans."

  • "This review is long overdue, as our visit was on Christmas (2013). But my mom and I came in (she insists we go to 5NB at least twice while she's in town), and, because it was Christmas, I just wanted to extend an even belated congratulations to a job well done -- on the restaurant's side and by our wonderful server, Michele. She was very kind and friendly, even though she was working on the holiday, and, even though we definitely overstayed our welcome, she never made us feel like we were an inconvenience. Working in the service industry and having to work in the service industry on a holiday, I know what it's like -- and Michele did everything right. Another great 5 Napkin Burger experience! :)"

  • "Probably the most expensive, overly talked about burger joint in NYC. I don't get it. I've been obsessed with burgers for years, i love burgers and I don't understand how this place has so many visitors. The food is over rated and the place is "energetic" or very noisy."

  • "As the title would suggest 5 napkin burger does very well at making exquisite burgers. Cooked to order with the right amount other ingredients so that your burger doesn't overflow but is still a substantial meal. The sides are pretty standard for a burger bar and compare to any other top burger restaurant. Service isn't the best but it isn't bad either. Overall a great find if you want a quality burger, with a vibrant atmosphere."

  • "The hamburgers were cooked to order and were juicy and delicious. For a very crowded and busy restaurant, the service was excellent."

  • "Crowded, noisy but fun time. The burgers are great. Often a wait, but if you like a good burger, it's worth the wait."

  • "After walking in the snow for the afternoon, 5 Napkin was a nice find for a mid day snack. The homemade pickles and deviled eggs hit the spot !! I can't wait to try more when I return home to Miami."

  • "Service always seems slow here. A long time to take your drink order and even longer to bring it. The hamburgers are wonderful though but skip the cheese tots. A little lite on the cheese."

  • "I used to love 5NB. I ate there twice a week, knew everyone's name, and thought the food was great. Service is still really good, but the quality of the burgers is really slipping. I wouldn't say this based on one off night, because I was a huge fan. Complaints range from unseasoned meat, to hard dry patties. I used to be able to count on a rounded moist flavorful burger. This week (and other times as well), I got a burger that was clearly fried and pressed flat -- hard on the outside, and dry in the middle -- and possibly a lesser quality of meat. Tasteless. With the opening of Corner and Umami, 5NB had really better step up their game to reclaim their spot as the best burger in NYC."

  • "I'm not sure how this restaurant would be on a Sat. night. It might be too hip and noisy for us "oldies but goodies", but my friend and I were very happy with our experience on Sun. First of all, it's located across from the AMC Loews 84th St. theater. Being seniors, walking with the aid of canes, it was so convenient to simply walk across the street to this wonderful restaurant, after a great movie experience! Definitely my kind of evening! The two hostesses were so lovely and accommodating! Really, they went out of their way to make us happy with a great private table! The waitress was wonderful, and the food fabulous! Of course we had to have burgers for our first time there. They were so succulent and juicy, a ten napkin treat!"

  • "This place is has the potential to be quite nice but sometimes the service is poor. I come here sometimes because I live across the street and the convenience factor trumps the disappointing service."

  • "The food is always great at 5 Napkin Burger on the UWS. The reason for my low rating is that the service (not the bar staff mind you as they were outstanding) was under par. It felt like no one wanted to serve us and took about a good 15 minutes before anyone came over and that was after my wife had to get the hostess involved."

  • "Burgers are fantastic and they offer many variety's. Beer selection is awesoem and the appetizers are great. Beer pretzels are awesome. they also ofer alternatives to burgers; salads, sushi, etc.. Great place to meet some friends and hang out in a casual environment. Staff is awesome as well. Make a reservation"

  • "Made a reservation on open table for a dinner for 4. Got to the restaurant in which they sat us at a two person table, claiming they thought it was only for 2. (Double checked reservation, it said 4). They then attempted to put together tables to make a four person arrangement which not only failed, aggravated the people next to is as well since there wasn't enough room for that many people in the area we were placed in. Food was fine, nothing special at all and way over priced. If you're not counting calories or dollars, then this is your place."

  • "GREAT JUICY BURGERS OF ALL KINDS (BEEF, VEGGIE, TURKEY, LAMB) AND A GREAT BURGER SALAD IF YOU WANT TO SKIP THE BUN. ALSO A VERY WIDE VARIETY OF OTHER DISHES, APPETIZERS, AND DESSERTS. FRIES, SWEET POTATO FRIES, AND ONION RINGS OF COURSE. AN EXPENSIVE BURGER...$12 - $15, BUT THIS IS MUCH HIGHER LEVEL THAN A DINER. NOT EXACTLY KID-FRIENDLY. I'D SAY PARENTS OF KIDS WOULD LIKE IT, BUT NON-KID TABLES IN THE VICINITY WOULDN'T APPRECIATE BABY SHENANIGANS. MANY TABLES ARE CLOSE TOGETHER. GREAT SERVICE. SLIGHTLY SNOBBY HOSTESSES DEPENDING UPON WHO...CERTAINLY NOT ALL THE TIME. TEND TO OVER ESTIMATE WAIT TIME AND INADVERTENTLY DISCOURAGE PEOPLE & SEND THEM AWAY. (WHAT THEY DESCRIBE AS A 30 MINUTE WAIT FREQUENTLY IS 10-15 MINUTES)."

  • "The veggie burger is really great. I think it would be great to have a few more veggie-options such as a good sald - there area few salds available. Overall I sat there a few times, it's a great place to meet with friends or take your family. For a birger joint - it's pretty veggie-friendly and the overall quality seems great."

  • "Second time at the Five Napkin Burger, and just as good as the first. The burgers are big and juicy, the fries are tasty too. My sweet potato fries were yummy. Onion rings, matzoh ball soup and potato skins were all delicious. I was a little disappointed with the fried pickles, not as crispy as I would have liked."

  • "as always its a pleasure to dine here with two kids, one under two. Staff is more than helpful and service is quick and efficient. Food is always great. Only problem no where to put coats, especially in the winter. They need a coat rack or two or three to make sitting a bit more comfortable and less crowded. Otherwise, cheers."

  • "My roommate and I were both stuck in the city and needed some place to go for Christmas dinner. We decided who needs a classic meal. Instead we feasted on the fantastic appetizers and burgers we bought three appetizers and a burger each. We recommend the pimento cheese stuffed potato skins. I also loved the calamari with jalapeños. The burgers are all amazing and you can't go wrong with a cocktail. Loved the bloody Mary's. Would recommend this place to all my friends."

  • "We all enjoyed our burgers and shakes. It takes them a long time to bring out 4 burgers, and the shakes take even longer. Kind of loud. We were there around 4:30, so it was not very busy, which is a plus. But it does make you wonder how long it would take them to serve during a busy time."

  • "Have you ever had that feeling where you're having a great conversation, eating a great meal and the waiter is constantly hovering around you. He knows you're engrossed in a riveting conversation. You've ordered. You're eating but he's still hovering, rushing you to order the next thing because.... I dont' know quite why??! The restaurant isn't packed. It's 6 or 7pm. And, even if it was, you're still eating!! The food here is great for burgers, fries, tacos..even sushi. they even were great about our request for a booth. I love the ambiance but the rushing waiter is really bad. Used to be a great restaurant but now they seem pressured. Don't plan on relaxing and enjoying your time here. Plan on being rushed, like a diner. Pity."

  • "This place is and feels like a chain. The veggie burger was really delicious, as were the regular burgers (4-5 stars). The "wonderful" chocolate cake was mass-produced sweet stuff you could get at the supermarket anywhere. Rum raisin ice cream had lost its structure, had crystals from being in freezer too long, or melting and refreezing. Feels like some person has this as a project, having found a formula for "successful restaurant" rather than "excellent dining experience". My water glass remained unrefilled the whole meal, they forgot to bring us napkins and silverware until we asked for it, and we were abandoned forever after being shown the dessert menu. Not cheap for burgers. 80's music is a nice touch."

  • "My mother and I, along with my three kids (ages: 12, 10 & 7) dined here on a busy Saturday night in December. This was a perfect spot. Festive and lively but well run clean. I had a hard time finding a reservation in this busy season. Looked on trip advisor and this place had a high rating (#100 out of 11K rest in NYC). Luckily we landed at 5 Napkin. It did not disappoint! My mother and I split a burger (the special) and it was plenty for us. The meat is super high quality and cooked just perfect. Great selection of beer and really good ambiance. Perfect spot for kids too."
