49 Social, the latest addition to the expanding Downtown Crossing culinary scene, is now open and serving refined modern American cuisine Monday through Saturday. The seasonal dinner menue,draw inspiration from around the globe while incorporating ingredients from local New England farms whenever possible. The bar menu features smaller plates sure to satisfy late night cravings and complement an extensive wine list and craft cocktail menu. Guests are offered a choice of dining experience over three levels of seating including a mezzanine and a downstairs lounge, which are also available for private functions.   • "Service was relatively fast - wait staff understood that diners were headed for the theater. Lobster Ravioli was to die for - wish they would offer it as a full meal, not just an appetizer. Herb Crusted Lamb was tasty on the edges, but sadly not properly cooked through. I'd dine there again, though - the prices were very reasonable for a downtown location with such tasty cuisine!"

  • "Enjoyed every aspect of our first visit here. Reservation was observed, although we decided to sit at a hightop in the lounge area instead.. Bartender recommended and made a perfect drink for me. Hubbie's Frutti di Mare was incredible. Housemade pasta, amazing sauce, perfectly portioned. I had the special; seared halibut w/ (housemade) mushroom tortellini & sauteed mushrooms, and it was perfect. Beautiful piece of fresh fish! The tortellini = divine (mmm...) and the mushrooms (shiitake + other ) were garlicky & nicely browned. We enjoyed talking to owner who was attentive and genuine. The validation (Lafayette garage) brought parking (went to Opera house after) down to only $12! Perfect destination for pre-theater."

  • "We were looking for something different pre-theater and non-chain so decided on 49 Social. The service was friendly but inconsistent. My husband ordered the crudo appetizer and shaved salad. He liked them both, but thought the crudo a bit bland. He really liked the flavors of the salad. I had the roasted pork loin. It was cooked well, not dry at all, but the accompanying kale was blended into a runny liquid and the farro was almost non-existent. Liked it, didn't love it."

  • "My wife and I dined here before theater. We had a reservation but at 6 PM I don't know if we needed one. Because it was so early, we weren't really hungry and opted for a starter and salad. We both ordered the Frito Misto, a fried combo of calamari, shrimp and scallops with a piece of garlic toast. The portion was generous and with a salad, plenty for us both. Downtown location is only convenient for theater goers or workers in the area. Parking would be at public garage, no valet."

  • "We arrived for a 6pm reservation and waited 10 minutes before we even saw the host to be seated. We had a 7:30pm theatre time and informed our waiter and ordered immediately. It took 30 minutes to get our drinks and our food arrived at 7:10pm, after we reminded our waiter both times we saw him. We were not offered additional drinks. The scallops were very salty and buttery, the swordfish overcooked and dry, and the lamb was tough. We will not be going back."

  • "I was a bit nervous after I read other reviews but, we made reservations for dinner at 5 for a 6:45 show. We showed up a bit early and we were seated right away. A great round booth that was perfect for three couples. Everyone was quite happy with their food as well as the selection of drinks and wine. Service was quick and friendly. There wasn't much of a crowd but it was picking up as we were leaving. Meals were a bit pricey, but it was very convenient to the location of the show so we would all do it again. Good selection, great location, great service."

  • "Went to dinner here before a show at the Opera House. Convenient location, and the food was excellent. We loved the ambience and the experience. The only thing is service was a little slow at times (asking for menues and drinks two for more) and our side dish was never ordered by our server. Otherwise we really loved it and would highly recommend."

  • "I took a chance in this restaurant based on reviews and location and am so happy I did. Our food was very good. I had swordfish which was cooked to perfection and surrounded by a wonderful mix of vegetables, puréed. My husband had a terrific burger. We tried one of their specialty drinks which was fantastic as well. Our waitress was energetic, bubbly, sweet and very attentive without being annoying. Great atmosphere (I was glad we went on the early side- it was nearly empty at 5:45 when we arrived but filled to the brim just a few minutes later and food delivery and service could have begun to slow down with the crowd. I would go back in a minute."

  • "Saw a show at the Boston Opera House, and before curtain at 7, we enjoyed some really enjoyable bar food and drinks. We did not get there until nearly six, but the waitress/bartender got us multiple drinks and 5 great bar apps and check so we were out the door by 6:45! Will definitely go back when have more time to check it out at a more leisurely pace."

  • "First the good: The food here was delicious. The lamb chops were huge and beautifully cooked. The scallops were perfectly cooked and elegantly plated. Now the bad: We went for before theater dinner, got stuck in traffic getting there,and had only 90 minutes before the show (I kept in touch with the hostess and she promised it would be ok). And, there was a fire alarm next door that affected the kitchen. With all of these obstacles we cut the restaurant a lot of slack. But still, it took almost an hour to get our meal. We only had 20 minutes to eat and pay. Then, even knowing we were obscenely rushed, our server never came back to take our payment. Finally one of the other servers did it for us. Still, I'd give the place one more chance."

  • "VISITED 49 SOCIAL FOR THE FIRST TIME AND MUST SAY THE EXPERIENCE WAS MEMORABLE, WHICH IS SOMETHING I RARELY SAY ABOUT A DINING EXPERIENCE. SINCE I AM A VERY CRITICAL FOODIE. THE RECENTLY HIRED CHEF BRIAN MILLER CREATED A NEW MENU WHICH IS LESS THAN A WEEK OLD. THE MENU IS COMPREHENSIVE AND VARIED WITHOUT HAVING A LARGE NUMBER OF CONFLICTING ITEMS. EVERYTHING WAS EXPERTLY PREPARED AND BEAUTIFULLY PRESENTED. THE SUTTLE FLAVORS AND QUALITY OF THE FOOD WAS AS GOOD AS ANY DINING EXPERIENCE I HAVE HAD ANYWHERE. I AM SURE 49 SOCIAL WILL BECOME ONE OF THE BEST DINING EXPERIENCE IN BOSTON ONCE THE PUBLIC HAS EXPERIENCEDTHE NEW CHEF'S CREATIONS. ALSO I MUST SAY THE SERVICE AS SUPURB AND MANY THANKS TO OUR WAITER, CHRIS."

  • "My wife got to go to a ballet, so I picked dinner. We arrived a couple of hours before the show so that we could relax. Our server and hostess were very friendly and patient. The wine list offered plenty to offer, with some choice wines that suited my tastes. The meal was incredible. The steak was perfectly cooked, and the lobster with the saffron sauce ended too quickly."

  • "We got stuck in traffic on the Mass Pike. When I called the restaurant to let them know we would be late for our reservation, the woman was very understanding and said she'd hold our table for us. We arrived 30 minutes late and our table was waiting for us. The server came over right away and asked us if we were going to the 7:30 show. We were, and she said she would take care of us and get us out on time. She was true to her word and yet we didn't feel rushed. Excellent attentive service. The food was very good, too."

  • "As we were being led to our table all the way in the back of the restaurant, I made a comment to the woman who seated us about how we were really hidden in the back and jokingly said 'hope you guys don't forget about us.' As she was walking away, she loudly yelled to the waitress, "You've got a live one!" and NOT in a nice way. I was terrified we were going to get spit in our food. We ordered the fish over wild rice, which was really, really salty (at least they kept refilling our water) and the fish was still pretty raw and kind of cold in the center. Also, they do not read the notes you send them when you make OpenTable reservations, we had to catch a 7:30 ballet, and I had to remind them twice about it. I'm not going back ever."

  • "I was searching the area for restaurants because I was going to see a show down the street at the Boston Ballet, when I came across 49 Social. I always look up menu's beforehand just to make sure that there is potentially something for everyone. The minute you walk in the decor and the lighting brings out the entire feel of the restaurant, very elegant. The food was absolutely amazing, and they have a bunch of signature cocktails that are named after shows that have played, which adds a nice touch. Since going for the first time about a year ago, I have been back many times and definitely don't hesitate to recommend this place to others."

  • "Had quite an enjoyable meal before the ballet on a friday night. The food was delicious and was brought to us in a fashionably quick way. We ordered muscles and the margarita flatbread pizza. The pizza was quite tasty with a mix of mozzarella and parmesan cheese. I took a risk on a cocktail before the ballet and was pleasantly surprized by "Beauty and the Beast" it's playful title matched the flavors and sensory experience of sweet and bitter. There are many items on the menu that I am anxious to return and try. This will become a regular spot for when I'm dining in downtown crossing."

  • "49 Social is a really cute place. We were seated promptly and the wait staff was able to answer our questions about the food, ingredients, and possible substitutions very well. The bread was fabulous and the herb olive oil dip was wonderful. Our food came promptly and then... we became invisible. We couldn't get a refill on our water and waited almost 20 minutes after we finished for the table to clear and to get our check, after asking for it twice. I'm not sure if they were just overly busy or these was a disconnect in the service plan, but it spoiled what was otherwise a great meal. We will give them another try because there are some dishes on the menu we want to try, but we will do it when we don't have somewhere to be after dinner."

  • "Had a party of 10, all from out of town and booked this based on a local's recommendation. Menu online looked great. then when got there and it was the summer menu -- in Feb? & no soups (on a freezing night) & no salad. Huh? When we inquired -- its a new chef, he's really great, he can make a salad for you, etc. Ok. 4 got salads & they were so full of pepper they were barely palatable. One diner's lobster roll was made with such a heavy hand of chipotle mayo that it was on fire and she could not eat it. Made a new one but didnt take it off check. Great waitress, very attentive and apologetic. This place could be great if they get it together with this new chef."

  • "We had dinner at 49 Social before attending the ballet. Our food was absolutely delicious. Swordfish was cooked through (as requested) but still managed to be deliciously moist and tender; side dishes of lobster rissoto and broccolini were delicious. My dining companion, who is vegetarian, opted to mix and match side dishes - vegetable couscous was very flavorful, and grilled asparagus was amazing - the portion was huge and even though the asparagus were enormous, thick spears, they were incredibly tender. We will definitely be back."

  • "Stuffed pork chop was perfectly seared, juicy with caramelization on the outside. Frutti di mare was also excellent. Portions were filling but not excessive, as this is a quality over quantity dining experience. The wines were mostly too expensive for my tastes, but we did find a nice Chablis. We had splendid desserts. Bill came to $110 for two people, and I added 20% because our waitress was attentive and helpful. The restaurant is around the corner from the theater district, so it is perfect for an early dinner and show."

  • "Having previously visited the 49 Social I was really looking forward to wrapping up my valentines day evening with romantic experience. Overall, the dessert was excellent (we specifically went for dessert). However, I was truly disappointed where we were seated which did not allow for the romantic feel I was hoping for. Instead we were across from the bar which had the TV on and as with any reaturant usually is loud and energetic; we were also very close to the door entrance so everyone that walked in was in sight but was worse was the cold draft from outside that kept coming in when someone walked in. I was cold the entire time and was looking forward to leaving."

While the meal was good, lamb was a bit overcooked, it was not worth the expense. I was also concerned about the menu which still reads "Summer Specials" in January. Attention to detail is usually what separates the best restaurants from the good/average ones."

  • "We enjoyed a nice dinner, without rushing or worrying on a snowy evening, before a Saturday night performance at the Opera House. We ate in the pretty, downstairs room after being offered a table in the louder, more livelier upstairs. Good cocktails, good salmon and swordfish,tasty bread pudding for dessert. A little bit pricy for a routine date night, but perfect for making a theater night into a special event."

  • "Made a 6:30 reservation before a 8pm Theatre show. Table was ready. Menu was well varied, with 3 specials that evening. Service was very good. Waitstaff seemed attentive to our timing, so that we had our check when we needed to leave. Food was excellently prepared and fresh. We selected this restaurant for it's proximity to the theatre, having not been there. Also I had not heard of it, but in the end we were very happy with the election"
