Diner Reviews
  • "Unforunately they were having electrical problems and the AC and credit card machines were down. It was unbearably hot inside."

  • "Easily top ten brunch dining in the city. 44 & X offers a fancy menu at fair prices. Excellent coffee and very enjoyable complimentary mini muffins for their patrons. Ambient light from the large glass windows helps to set the mood. The waitstaff is attentive and well mannered. I was very impressed by the level of professionalism in their service."

  • "I frequent 44 & 10 at least once a week lately, and sometimes it's an AMAZING experience! Every now an then, like my last visit, the service is just bad. I think the spot is a gem in the neighborhood so I brought an industry friend this time, but the staff seemed slow. Saving Grace was when it started raining and the manager quickly moved us inside... He was fast! But then the bad service started again. In the beginning we had to ask for silverware. Then we had to ask for it again when moved inside. It took all night to eat because we were always waiting (menu, drinks, ordering, etc.). Again, I'll come back and I love you guys, just need a better staff than the night I was there."

  • "The pork tenderloin was excellent... the salmon on the other hand didn't really taste quite right."

  • "While the waiter was friendly, he was not remotely apologetic about our long wait for a first cocktail, for our apps, or for a long delay in getting an entree right that needed to be sent back (undercooked duck breast that didn't return to the table until the others' entrees were nearly finished). Some of the food was excellent, but this dish was still not great after being corrected."

  • "I had friends visiting from the UK and wanted a place where we would get good food, good service, and be in an ambience that is smart yet relaxing and gives an opportunity for us to catch up without feeling like we are being hounded by wait staff, rushed or in a place that is too noisy. It's always a go to place, especially when I have out of town visitors"

  • "This is one of our go-to restaurants pre-theater. The food is always fresh, creative and delicious, and the service is top notch."

  • "Really, this place might be pretty to look at but the food is nothing to rave about. The pancakes were good BUT the eggs Benedict crab cake version was terrible and we had 2 of those.First of all the crab cake was ALL filler, if you looked real close, you might find some crab, but I did not have my glasses so no such luck. Secondly the poached eggs which are supposed to be runny were hard and overcooked.I sent them back and guess what, the next set were as well. Same dish and problem with the 3rd person with us. The table next to us had the same problem but their second set of eggs came out properly cooked. We also ordered a side of bacon, which came out after 2 of our plates had been cleared. Lastly, 13$ for an 8 oz Bloody Mary, come on?"

  • "The wait-staff was very attentive. Food was prepared perfectly (we had fish which is not always easy). Very convenient prior to seeing a show."

  • "Creative, unbelievably tasty selections, that never disappoint! So many dishes that look so good, we will just have to return again and again to try them all!"

  • "First time here, will return. Enjoyed the food. All four of us had an excellent meal!"

  • "I had the salmon, which I ordered medium rare, and it was perfect. Nice piece of fish. Husband got the chicken, which ws also very good. Service terrific."

  • "Everyone in our party thoroughly enjoyed their dinner. The food was delicious. I had the short ribs which melted in my mouth. Others in our party were very impressed with the Pork Tenderloin. The service was very good."

  • "The food, service and friendliness is always on. Great selections of wine, and a great place to get a variety (not too much vegetarian place though)."

  • "The restaurant is very light and airy and the food is delicious. I've been here for brunch and dinner and I highly recommend this restaurant for either meal. The staff are helpful and friendly as are the owners, Scott and Bruce. Great restaurant!"

  • "We were 6 for a celebration dinner on Saturday night at 8 PM. The noise level inside the restaurant is very high, so we opted to eat in the small outside dining are in front. The hostess was very accommodating, creating a space for us at a quieter end of the area. The food was delicious; both meat and fish dishes were praised by our guests. However there was a very long wait - almost an hour - before we received our meals. The staff do no hurry the diners at all. We live in Florida and visit NYC several times a year; I would come again for a leisurely meal."

  • "The last four times I have been to NYC I have made a point of journeying to Hell's Kitchen just for the purpose of dining at 44 & X. I have never had a bad dining experience here. The menu offers a wonderful array of choices and anything I have ever ordered has been cooked/prepared to perfection. The service is outstanding, attentive without being obtrusive. I think the only thing that one could complain about is the view that one gets of the gas station on the other side of 10th Avenue! On the other hand, the view one has of the people walking up and down the restaurant side of 10th is outstanding! Anyway, the fact that I keep coming back to 44&X is testament to what a great restaurant this is."

  • "Food was excellent with many many choices. The wild mushroom ravioli was outstanding with an explosion of different flavors. Service was top notch - very attentive but not intrusive. Portion sizes are very large. You won't leave hungry. The only minor complaint is that the the tables against the window wall are too close together. A staff member has to literally move the table out for the party sitting against the window to get in or out. This would easily be corrected by the removal of one or two tables."

  • "Early evening on a Saturday night as we were heading to a show. Sat outside on a comfy summer night. Waiter was friendly and attentive but not over the top. Great wine list, super specials. Hamichi appetizer was a nice, light starter. Braised short ribs were amazing with large portions. Duck breast was very good, too. Unfortunately, too full for dessert. Will be back!"

  • "This has always been a favorite of mine as I have lived in the area for years. Scott and his team are welcoming and always friendly and accommodating. The food is familiar (like all your favorites) and delicious. I have recommend 44&X to many people who have had a great experience."

  • "The kitchen seemed to rule the roost in terms of accommodating our requests. They turned us down twice even though the requests were simple and the restaurant was not overly crowded."

  • "It's way way way too noisy inside! But the food is really good."

  • "Agree with the others here - food was good, setting was charming, service was good. This is a tight restaurant, like many in NYC, and after we were seated a woman and her energetic two year old sat next to us. Well, really with us. I immediately asked to be moved, and was moved to a lovely table, according to the hostess, 'because I had a reservation, and she did not'. It was very loud, which should be fixed. The main floor rest room was likely the nicest I have ever seen in a restaurant. Worth a visit!"

  • "44 & X has become our go-to restaurant when my wife and I are in New York. While the menu may seem similar to many other restaurants, the execution is what makes this our favorite: every dish we have ordered has tasted truly unique and special. In our latest visit, we ordered an appetizer special that had no fewer than 10 different ingredients; we worried that this could be too much of a good thing, but the protein, herbs, vegetables and sauce came together into a perfectly harmonious blend. It was just fabulous. The cocktails, entrees, and desserts were similarly wonderful. We don't go here for pre-theater because the food is just too good to rush through. But if you want to enjoy food that is truly out of this world, go to 44 & X."

  • "44X is a great dining experience with great food, great decor, great waiters. This was our second visit and can't wait to come back and dine there again. Second time I had lobster taco and it was as delicious as the first time that I dined there."

  • "Generally a pretty good experience. However my starter dish ( a raviolo) had gritty spinach. More washing please! Mains were very good."

  • "Still favorite restaurant in NYC!! Food is to die for, fantastic ambience sidewalk cafe, and hottest, friendliest waiters (particularly props to Allen!!) keep me coming back trip after trip. Seafood special is always over the top. Pea soup for non-pea soup lovers. Perfect steaks. Topped off with incredible chocolate mousse and delicious Williamette wines."

  • "Went out for a date night and was pleasantly surprised with how great this place was. Service was great and the food was out of this world. We started with two cocktails and the crab fritter which was amazing. No fishy taste at all and lots of fresh crab meat. I had the baked chicken and my boyfriend had the chicken and waffles. Both portions were just right and the flavors were definitely there. It was a little loud by the time we wrapped up dinner and we did not try out the desserts (maybe next time) but overall a great experience."

  • "We found this restaurant online a d selected it based on only great reviews. Our experience exceeded high expectations and demanding palates. The atmosphere was trendy but cosy at the same time. The wait staff was very attentive (not to mention also quite attractive) and our waiter made us feel very at ease. We would recommend this restaurant without hesitation to anyone looking for a great place in the city."

  • "44 & X has great food and ambiance - a wonderful place to dine pre or post-theatre. But the noise level is astounding! When will restaurants realize that we are dining with people we like and would actually like to hear what they have to say?"

  • "Read a review that this was a Top 10 brunch place in NYC. I disagree. Food was just ok. Had the waffles w strawberries and bananas as recommended. The only outstanding quality - freshness of fruit. My husband had herb eggs, grits and sausage - said there was no flavor. Biggest gripe - the staff. We had reservation but they were on a wait. While waiting the owner publicly yell at his host and hostess for the delays. He took over but didn't improve. I felt as if I was doing everyone a favor by dining there. Our waiter only checked on us once. At one point, the owner rolled his eyes and made a face directed at our table and our waiter nodded and smiled. Note to owner: there are mirrors on the walls! Won't be back, there are better places."

  • "I come here frequently, and every time the meal and the waiters are splendid. The food is consistent, which is more than I can say for most of the restaurants in the city. We are always greeted by the owner, and we love the flower arrangements. Let's tear down the Hess Station across the street, but now reflection on the restaurant. Fantastic in every way."
