Diner Reviews
  • "had brunch here on Sunday...wonderful. we sat on the patio which is much quieter than the restaurant. we had guests from out of town who loved every minute...the california omelette was perfectly prepared, and the deep dish french toast was superb. best spot for brunch mid town."

  • "Really great food. So so sevice. Our waiter was not very attentive."

  • "I loved the ambience and overall decor of the restaurant. Our server, Sam, was very knowledgeable and friendly. One downside was that we were seated at a table that was right in front of the door to the back station/kitchen so there was a lot of traffic going in and out- including the swinging door that hit my friend a few times. Just be careful if you are seated here. Other than that, great place to take friends after the theatre, The chop salad is fantastic- very fresh and delicious, Also, loved my skirt steak. Comes with haricot vert, asparagus, onion rings...the works."

  • "This restaurant was recommended by a friend. It was pouring out when we arrived & we were offered a table in the restaurant proper or outside on the covered, heated patio. We opted for the patio. It was warm, cozy & the sound of the rain was lulling. We had a waiter-in-training which we did not mind; however, he did not return to see how we were doing. When he did return, he did not ask if we were finished. He tried to remove my husband's bread plate before the main course & he succeeded in taking off with my soda. The food was wonderful but a large, raucous party soon entered & they had everyone's attention. They had the heat turned off but we requested it turned back on which took about 1/2 hr. We quickly finished & left."

  • "Brunch was awesome! The food and drinks were so good, not the normal slop some eggs benedict on a plate and hope to turn your table over asap Sunday brunch deal you normally get in the city. Only complaint is that the seating inside is cramped and we were right by the door to the outside which meant icy blasts of wind if the waiters left the door open. Also I brought my dad and although he loved the food I probably wouldn't bring him back just because all the music was Lady Gaga and everything was pink. But really the food was awesomeeeeee and I highly recommend the Beyonce Irrepeachable mimosa."

  • "Food was served over cooked. The skin on the fish that was supposed to be crisp was soggy and unseasoned. Service was perfunctory and extremely slow. The high ceilings result in noise levels that are intolerable to normal conversation. Wasn't worth the high prices on any dimension."

  • "Happy to discover this welcoming place at 10PM post-theater; we were on 42nd near 9th. Easily walked over to 10th between 44 and 45. The restaurant was busy and the servers were friendly and knowledgeable. We enjoyed our wine, and our meal. Steak was prepared just right, with delicious asparagus, green beans, french fries and fried onion rings. The scallops also were nicely prepared. We'd come back. Would like to sit in the year-round garden room next time."

  • "Lovely romantic restaurant, food was outstanding and the wine was fantastic too. A little pricey but definitely worth it!"

  • "Food was delicious - wonderfully prepared, service was friendly and attentive. Great for pre-theatre but we'll go back when we can enjoy a longer evening there. Relatively small space that is attractively decorated. Tables were a little too close together, but it didn't really matter."

  • "We have been a couple times for dinner while visiting the city. This time we were here for Sunday Brunch. As always amazing service. Eggs cooked to request and perfection. And the cocktails are off the chart. 44 1/2 isn't far my favorite restaurant in the city. Keep out the outstanding work."

  • "Ate at 44 1/2 for the first time, based upon the write ups on trip advisor. Service was good, as was the food. Only criticism is that the narrowness of the restaurant means that every table is in the direct path of the severs bringing food from the kitchen and serving drinks etc, plus guests arriving and leaving. Tables are very small, ours was for 4, but could barely hold the plates and glasses for the 3 of us. Portion size was good, none of us finished our entrees. We shared a desert, that was fabulous."

  • "Great spot way west in the Theater district. Great music and wonderful staff , and creative well prepared menu. We enjoy eating here on the early side before a 7:30 show. Lots of choices including tuna tartare with avocado, the tuna is so fresh and all of the other ingredients on the plate make this a great starter to share.we recently both had the scallops with a very interesting mix of vegetables underneath them, and the scallops were cooked perfectly, seared, but still moist on the inside. Great wines by the glass."

  • "Seriously patting myself on the back for finding this lovely restaurant!! I honestly don't think there was anything left on a single plate at our table...not even the desert plates! From the moment we walked in to the moment we walked out of the restaurant it was pure enjoyable. In love with their quirky drink menu, a nice wine list, good sized portions, something for everyone on the menu and not overpriced! I expected to pay alot more in a nice restaurant in NYC but it was like any fine dining we have at home. Definately returning and recommending to friends!!"

  • "One of the best restaurants in NYC for great food, service and ambience. What more can one ask for such a great dining experience."

  • "44 1/2 is really a full package restaurant. Simple, but perfect decor, very good food, pleasant staff, affordable, and an ambiance that is fun and not stuffy, making it easy to relax and enjoy the experience. I have dined here quite often in the last year, and it has truly become one of my favorite restaurants in NYC."

  • "Arrived around 11am-with reservation, but not overly crowded at that time, seated right away. Friendly, professional service. Lots to choose from the brunch menu, plus could choose from lunch menu.. Coffee cup refilled often. Our selections were served to us quickly. Food was very good, the ambience relaxing and tables, not too crowded. There is a lovely outdoor dining room space toward the back of the restaurant. Fresh flowers in abundance and prices moderate. Would definitely dine at 44 1/2 again soon and do recommend."

  • "Dined here this past Saturday after the theatre. The Lobster Pot Pie entree was spectacular. Can't wait to finish the leftovers tonight. My husband ordered the Short Ribs which he wasn't crazy about (there was a white sauce on top) but the waiter graciously exchanged it for him. He did however love the Calamari appetizer and the apple crisp with gelato dessert. We want to try their sister restaurant next time."

  • "After showing relatives around the city for the day, we ended at 44 1/2 with a big appetite. Ambience, service and food were all great, the only (minor) criticism was the servings were too large (if you can believe that). The cost was fine. I would recommend this to anyone, my pork dish was amazing as well. Very enjoyable way to end the day, we will be back"

  • "I love this place! The food, presentation, decor, staff and drinks are all top notch. We first ate here on Valenyines Day and couldn't wait to come back. It was walkable from Jacob Javits Center, so I put it on my priority list to come back. We were happy we did. We totally enjoyed our tuna appetizer ."

  • "What an unexpected pleasure! The food here is top notch. Crab cake appetizer easily fed two; the pairing with avocado was inspired. The lobster ravioli was superb, the pasta papery and al-dente chewy--excellent! The Scallops in a bacon vinaigrette reduction were perfectly cooked, the asparagus and butter bean/vegetable mix fresh and tasty. The peanut butter mousse with chocolate malt ice cream and topped with sugared peanuts again was big enough to share and topped oFf a culinary masterpiece of a meal. Five stars!!"

  • "Slightly off the path of the Great White Way makes pre theatre dining a relaxing meal featuring a great menu, very good food and just a short walk east to the Theatre District. For pre theatre or pre party, I would definitely go again. Also believe that the outdoor dining in the courtyard would be fun, but I ate inside, as it was 22 degrees outside."

  • "This was a great find and a wonderful surprise. I wanted EVERYTHING on the menu but settled for the Gruyere and mushroom omelet. Fabulous. Served with delicious fresh fruit. My husband had the salmon and eggs Benedict. Also delicious. Restaurant was very inviting, full of New Yorkers enjoying brunch. I cannot wait to go back!"

  • "After a really rough day, this restaurant was a welcome change. The food was outstanding. I had the fillet and my date had the salmon. Both were perfect. The restaurant was decorated with soft pink lighting (presumably for valentines) and it added to a sweet feeling for our evening. I would definitely return."

  • "Pretty in pink was the uplifting decor in the back room tent. We were two couples enjoying a fantastic dinner together. Food from appetizers to dessert was fantastic. Large portions, beautiful presentation and great choices. Service was terrific. The waiter was very accommodating, knew the menu and served us with a smile. Adventurous eaters - this is the place to be. We will put this on our "A" list when we visit the City on future trips."

  • "I've been coming here for a while as I live in the neighborhood. The service and atmospehre is great, and for the most part the food is very good. That being said, I order the Tuna Tartar nearly every time I dine at 44&1/2, and am almost always frustrated and annoyed when it comes out of the kitchen half-frozen. The kitchen needs to pull the tuna from the freezer well before serving, or better yet plate the tuna per order! Truley maddening. Other than the tuna problem, the food is usually very tastey - though considerably overpriced."

  • "Been going to the this place for many years and I've enjoyed it every time. The drinks, food and servers are all fantastic. The outdoor space is great, but personally I hate the chairs (in the back...very uncomfortable) - yes, that's my only complaint."

  • "I enjoy 44 1/2 and come here often. The menu offers a delicious variety. The cocktail list is fun and unique, but expensive at $12-15. The waiters are cute and sexy in their playful t-shirts, which are for sale. The bar and dining areas are spacious and well designed. There is a covered garden that is my favorite spot when the weather is nice. I would come here for my last meal."

  • "We went as a group of 8 with an early dinner reservation after a Saturday Matinee. We were early and they weren't open yet. But they welcomed us set our table early. The music was a surprising but pleasing mix of catchy oldies that made you want to sing along. Nice ambience, great service, great staff. The favorites appetizers were the roasted beets with goat cheese and the tuna tartar, I was disappointed they forgot to bring the fennel and pistachio bisque, so I will have to go back for that. The favorite entrée of the night was the sage roasted pork loin with the marscapone polenta, the steaks were great cuts and perfectly cooked and the halibut was fresh and delicious. Over all everyone in the group loved it and we would return."

  • "Despite eating in Hell's Kitchen all the time, we had never been to 44 1/2. It has a reputation as a "gay" restaurant, which it is, so we did not take it seriously or think it would be that good. WE WERE WRONG! The food was very good, portions were large and everything was prepared as we requested it (the delicious Salmon was a true medium, as was the filet mignon). Cocktails were delicious and the servers are the best combination of friendly, efficient, and hot. What could be bad about that?"

  • "This is a terrific place to get together with friends for dinner or lunch/brunch. The menu is varied and the food is very good -- you will have more choices you want to order than you can eat at one sitting! The portions are large and satisfying. The wait staff is cute and friendly without being intrusive. Overall, I highly recommend it for casual dining in Hell's Kitchen."
    Dined on 1/24/2014
  • "The waiters are too cute! The food is excellent - plentiful and delicious and great healthy choices. The décor is great. The tables are too crowded in. The tables are too small and the plates are too big. There were only 3 of us at the table but everything but the necessities had to removed I had to remove my coffee saucer and balance my plate an angle so it would fit on the table while still holding it with one hand to make sure it didn't fall in my lap. Re-think the plates."
    Dined on 1/19/2014
  • "The menu and food was a throwback to the 80's in a nice, if slightly dated setting, with delightful and attentive staff. the food - my only real interest, was perfectly good, but solidly unmemorable. Each dish had too many ingredients with flavors fighting one another often in too much sauce at prices that warrant much, much better from the kitchen. Fine if it is the only place to go - we decided we needed to take people to dinner and the theater at the last moment and wanted them to be in the same geography - but there is better to be had."

  • "incredibly creative dishes executed very well. really wonderful. only reservation was my glass of wine which was only good. others at the table were pleased however"
