Diner Reviews
  • "Selected 43North for dinner in Madison during Midwest Horse Fair. Menu looked very interesting and really liked the fact that most entrees were available in a small plate portion. The food was excellent and creative, especially the date and goat cheese appetizer, the lamb and the house made somores for dessert. Interesting and well priced wines by the glass. Some nice French reds in particular. Waiter was very professional and servcie was polite and timely, but would have been better if the waiter had been a little more engaging. Will return and recommend to others."

  • "The lobster bisque, the scallops, the roasted Caesar salad and the lamb were delicious. Our server was quite unfriendly and not very helpful. We really liked the food, but if we return, we will request a different server."

  • "The menu is interesting, the food is tasty, and the service is very good. It is dependable - we are seldom disappointed here."

  • "Add this place to your short list of favorites in Madison. Great place for lunch or dinner. Definitely get the Lobster Bisque. Yummy options you don't find at many other places."

  • "Wonderful Madison restaurant. The stuffed date with goat cheese, hazelnut, and pesto appetizer was hands down the best appetizer we've ever had. Intimate setting with excellent service. 30% off the entire bill for happy hour. We have not gotten such amazing food for that value ever. Highly recommended, a must-go."

  • "Nice food & service was good but let down by .... sign saying we could have 30% off if we were there before 6 - we arrived minutes after, by no one else in the restaurant other than 1 table by 7 & for us having booked there was no table set for us on arrival... there was a table for 4 near the front ready but probably on seeing we had 2 children they didnt want us to eat there. they put a table together towards the back & whilst doing this the hostess asked would we like a separate room out the back! Guess they don't like children!"

  • "Wait staff was attentive but not annoyingly so. We ordered half plates and it was just the right amount of food. The scallop large plate only gave 4 large scallops and I felt that was too little. However they were seared perfectly and very tasty."

  • "Small and large plates provide a perfect alternative! The game hen with wild mushrooms and gnocchi is absolutely deeelicious ... tender, perfectly prepared with intense flavors ... a unique offering not found at other restaurants. Lobster bisque is outstanding with impressive presentation! Duck confit salad ... mmm, so flavorful with generous amounts of tender duck!"

  • "My husband and I recently tried 43 North, we were celebrating our anniversary. The food was well prepared and even the small plate portions were generous. They have a good selection of cheeses and wonderful house made crackers, both go nicely with the beer and wine offerings. The scallops with bacon and brown butter vinaigrette was delicious, my husband enjoyed his steak, although it was not mid rare like he ordered, it was slighly over cooked. We were too full to try dessert but it all looked good. We will definitely go back."

  • "43 North did it again. My wife and I had an excellent dining experience. It started out with two nice glasses of red wne off of the wine special list, followed by a very unquie and tasty grilled caeser salad. My wife had the scallops and they were fantastic. I had the salmon, but when it arrived the pootatoes were ice cold. I normally do not send things back, but I mentioned it to the waiter, and he took care of the situation immediately and professionally. The managment at 43 North are committed to making your dining expereience a special one. And, we ended the evening with a very good chocolate beet cake. Yum! All in all, we can't wait to go back."

  • "Had a great lunch, gourmet really. I got the dumpling pork, and it was yummy with very fresh. Obvious care and attention to presentation. Service was friendly, prompt, but not overdone."

  • "The food and service made up for the lack of ambience and noise level. We love the option of half or full plate. The presentation of the food was beautiful! We highly recommend 43 North!"

  • "First time diners at this restaurant. Always wanted to try it, but never got there until now. Most everything was fabulous. The date appetizer was to die for. The brussel sprout salad was delicious, and the scallops were were fabulous. Only the mussels disappointed. The waitstaff was attentive, and very accommodating. Excellent wine list. I would recommend this restaurant wholeheartedly."

  • "We were going to a show at the Overture so we stopped here for dinner first! We received 30% off our bill since we ate before 7:00. My husband and I shared 2 small salads and 3 small plate entrees. All the food was good but my favorite was the scallops! We will come again!"

  • "I found this place on line when I was looking for a place to surprise my husband with for his birthday. It was a Monday night and they had the $40 place 4 course meal complete with wine tasting. The restaurant was quiet and relaxing. The wait staff were very professional and polite. The food was displayed greatly and tasted wonderful! My husband loved his birthday dinner. They even gave him a little candle on his dessert. I also thought it was a good deal for $40. We got 4 glasses of wine a piece! Wonderful place!"

  • "We went here with our grown son on his suggestion and had not been here before. The bread was great, the noise level was much lower than a lot of places. The food took a bit long considering it was not real busy but when it arrived we were very pleased. The Blood orange salad was perfectly dressed and light. The Waygu steak was snarfed down by our son and the salmon was just right. We will be back"

  • "They had a special Valentine's Day weekend menu, which we did not know about in advance but we enjoyed. (It might be nice if this was posted on their website in advance.) The choices were limited, but the food was very good. Unfortunately, we were seated at a table in the back which was near a door. We were freezing and ended up eating with our coats on. The main dining area is nice, so just avoid the back room and you will be fine."

  • "We had a great meal over all. Our duck confit salads were not that great ... but they were taken off of our bill and my Wagyu Beef & the Game Hen my friend ordered were amazing!! They were very gracious about the salads & I would definitely recommend them to friends!!"

  • "I was thrilled to find 43 North. I visit Madison a few times a year from San Francisco, and have tried a number of Madison restaurants. The food was excellent, and I really appreciated the option of small and large plates, providing an opportunity to try several dishes rather than just one. My colleagues and I went on a very cold week night, so there weren't many people there. I intend to try it again the next time I'm in town."

  • "We visited on a Monday night, our first time there for dinner. It was a very slow night, but the food and service were exceptional and the atmosphere was very nice. Plenty of meatless options and most menu items are available as small or large plates, which we enjoyed. We tried four dishes and all were great -- nothing too rich, nice-sized portions, all well thought out, fresh and beautifully presented. With the happy hour discount, which we didn't know about going in, it was a terrific value especially given the quality of the food and service."

  • "As a business traveler relocated from San Francisco, I can happily say that 43 North is a gem for any city in America. You can't go wrong with lunch or dinner. Look for the Monday wine tastings, and one of the best happy hours in town!"

  • "I got a small plate of potato croquettes, which the server said would have 2-3 on it, and i ended up with only one croquette, cabbage that was overcooked (and red- which was not described on the menu- I so would have picked something else if I had known it was red cabbage) for $12. Not interested in comming back if that is what you get for your money."

  • "Ambiance and service were low key and very tasteful. The four of us ordered four different salads, all of which were very creative and delicious. My salmon entree was way overcooked and disappointingly bland, and my wife's Cornish game hen was good but not spectacular. I do appreciate that 43 North offers small and large servings of most menu items; a very nice touch. With about 2 alcoholic drinks per person, price was about $50 a head. Not outrageous these days, but neither was it a screaming value given the hit and miss cuisine."

  • "Simple and tasteful is a short and pleasant way of describing the decor and atmosphere here at 43 North. I took some colleagues out for an early dinner, searching for a place that would allow us to converse and enjoy some unique and tasteful food. This particular venue had been recommended by some other professionals in the area. The service was fantastic, nothing but good things to say about it. Simply put though, the aps had something to be desired. The beef carpaccio was perhaps the least flavorful version that I have ever had. It was somewhat dry and lacking a lot in the flavor department. The accompanying crackers were nothing special either. Main dishes were fantastic- salmon is a must have, with amazing artichokes."

  • "We decided to try out 43 North during restaurant week & are glad we did! The food was delicious, service was attentive & it was a lively, modern atmosphere. Great location just blocks from the Capitol & near plenty of options to grab an after dinner drink."

  • "Visited 43 North during restaurant week based on ratings on open table. We didn't realize it was restaurant week which limited the dining choices to one of three appetizers, entrees and desserts. I had the stuffed dates appetizer with brussel sprout leaves appetizer and it was just o.k.. My wife had their soup option which was delicious. We both selected their Flank Steak which was very mediocre. Mine was underseasoned and bland overall, and my wife's was a bit undercooked and tough. Desserts were presented nicely by not memorable. Coffee press was very good. Nice atmosphere and service. I will try it again when they are offering their regular menu, but the food was just o.k., which wasn't what I was expecting."

  • "This restaurant is in the old Continental space on King St, Madison WI. My wife and I had our 3rd date there, by sheer coincidence we end up at in same space for our 3rd anniversary dinner. I called ahead, talked to GM about a quiet table, then made reserv through OT and put notes in referencing that. Table was great, staff was attentive in a low-key way (perfect). Food was unique, interesting, delicious."

  • "43 North has a great drink/wine list and delicious food that is on par with other Madison gems. I love the small plate/large plate option. Prices are very reasonable. Food is locally sourced when possible. The lobster bisque with cracklin and marshmallows (yes!) is divine. Wonderful service, too. I was really quite impressed and will return with friends."
