My family and I recently went to 42nd Street Oyster Bar for dinner. My husband and I had been there a couple of times previously over the past 15 years. I wasn't all that excited about going there but couldn't remember exactly why. Once we got there, I was reminded. The restaurant itself is a really nice place; the atmosphere is pleasant, it's clean, well-lit and the booth we sat at was very comfortable and roomy. We were both disappointed in the food, however. It certainly wasn't bad by any means but, for the prices, we felt like it could have been a lot better. I ordered grilled salmon, and my husband chose the grilled grouper. I've certainly had worse food, but I've definitely had better at less expensive establishments. My salmon was bland, and my baked potato was served with a dime-sized black spot inside of it. My husband had the same complaint about his grouper, saying it was cooked a bit too much on the outside. Probably the biggest disappointment was our server. She seemed like a nice young lady, but she barely spoke to us as she brought our food and, bearing in mind that the restaurant was very busy, it took her a long time to check back with us about beverage refills. My daughter wasn't very happy with her popcorn shrimp off of the kids' menu, but she's very picky anyway. On the up side, my son did seem to like his steamed shrimp, although he didn't eat much of his side of mashed potatoes. Overall, it wasn't the worst meal I've ever had but, based on the prices, I don't think I'd recommend the restaurant to anyone. Based on the crowd that was there when we left, it's obviously a very popular restaurant. It just wasn't for us.

Horrible expereince, I will not be back! The service was horrible, waited fo drinks for more than 15 minutes, waitstaff was rude and annoying, forgot to add my crabmeat to my meal, then went back and brought it out after the food was cold. Nothing short of a nightmare, not to mention they didn't even offer to take care of my entree....

We went to for music and good food. The food was awesome. We split a swordfish and sirloin and found both excellent. We did wish the lighting at the booths were a little lower. But the ambiance was great and the waitress was excellent. Make sure you have a reservation, since walkins were waiting 1:45 for a seat on a Saturday evening, we were seated in 5 minutes of our reservation time.

42 St O.B. combines a boisterous, high volume restaurant with surprisingly good service and food. The food isn't complicated - it's just done well. For example, the oysters - there are several different options, and they're all fresh and tasty (and nicely briny). Not complicated - just good. For a main, my wife had grilled sea bass (good), and I had fried flounder (which had fresh shrimp, a lemon sauce, and capers, on top of it) - simple and well prepared. Despite the big, noisy room, our service was attentive, informed, and very professional. The wine list is long, well chosen, and fairly priced. We had an excellent white Bordeaux for about $30. You MUST make a reservation - the waits are long. Parking is tricky. But worth it!

This restaurant is generally consistently good but after many years of being a regular this was definitely the worst experience I've had there. The food was not good. It lacked flavors and seasoning. I hope this was just one bad night and the culinary staff has not changed. I have not been there in six months so I will give it another chance.

I must say that I was overly impressed by the quality of the food at this restaurant. The New York Strip was one of the best restaurant steaks that I have ever eaten, and the cheesy potato side dish that I served was absolutely delicious. It was a reasonably high price for high quality food. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for an awesome meal in Raleigh. I hope to return in the near future!

The only drawback was it was a bit pricey! We had out of town guests and they really liked the atmosphere and the food was good!!

Love the oyster bar. Nice beer and wine selection, and when I'm in the mood for raw or steamed oysters, I like to go to 42nd Street and sit at the oyster bar where the waiters shuck the oysters for you. The will prepare them however you like them, from raw to whatever amount of steaming you like. Great hushpuppies too. When I'm not in the mood for oysters I like the other seafood selections they offer. Always good, and a great Raleigh tradition.

As always, loved going to 42nd Street. One of the few places in the Raleigh area to get lobster, which my wife loves. Very good steaks for me. A side and a side salad are part of the entree price, which isn't always the case in more upscale restaurants. And they were also very good. Excellent key lime pie and cheesecake to round it all off.

Although we were thinking steamed oysters heading in, we rebooted to a table for daily fish that was a very good call. My 17 year old had the filet w/ bacon wrapped scallops which as it turned out replaced his "most" favorite meal to date (he's been to some pretty hefty competitors around the country and not counting out Mom). My 20 year old son had the 42nd Street platter w/ the daily grouper. One happy college student he was. My bride of 27 years & I enjoyed a couple of martinis and our various food choices immensely but our outstanding meal was enhanced to a premium experience by the attention and knowledge of our server. She carried us through a fantastic hour and a half of dining excellence.

While we didn't have a bad experience there, it didn't meet our expectations. The construction in the area made parking a nightmare. I'm glad that we made reservations, because the place was packed. The ambiance was interesting, but extremely noisy. Both the petite filet and crab legs and the shrimp and crabmeat fettuccini were good but not great. The steak was beautifully done, but the crab legs were not up to snuff. The meat stuck to the shell (a sure sign that it was dried out or overcooked). I get crab legs as a treat only once in a blue moon, so I left disappointed. The service was excellent, but I didn't mention the crab legs. Perhaps I should have. For what was spent, I can't recommend it.

I would go back and try something else, but the platter with broiled shrimp and scallops plus a grilled piece of fish and 2 sides was a disappointment for $29.95. I counted 3 scallops mixed in with maybe 5-6 small shrimp in a bowl that looked like it came from K&W Cafeteria. The grilled grouper was a nice size. Since my friend loved her shrimp creole, the service was GREAT and the ambiance very nice, I'd give 42nd St Oyster Bar another chance, just to be fair.

We had checked the internet for a seafood restaurant in Raliegh, NC. The reviews seemed promising. Six of us visiting the City from various states decided to try it. The fish was overdone. The flounder had a metalic taste. A friend's grouper was dry. Another had salmon that was tasteless. The crabcakes were good, but of 6 entres, that was the only one that was not mediocre. Our server was also good. We have to go back to Raliegh in six months. Fortunately, we don't have to go back to that restaurant.

We sat at the oyster bar and our server was very friendly and prompt. Our problem was with the food.We order 3 appetizers. We wanted to spread then out, so we ordered them about 10. They each came about 5 minutes after we ordered them. The Buffalo shrimp and bacon wrapped scallops were pretty good. The ahi tuna was not. It had no flavor. The ginger was flavorless. There are 6 small pieces of tuna for $16!And there was no soy sauce mixture with it. Now the worst part. The oysters were sandy and gritty in every bite.Never had this problem in the past. I had recommended 42nd street to friends and they also had bad food experiences. Now i understand .The hushpuppies were awesome as always! We were in and out in an hour. I felt rushed
