  • "My husband and I came to Raleigh for our anniversary. We are from High Point and I had heard excellent things about 42nd Street. I made my reservation online. We arrive early but it was nice to be able to sit down and have a drink before dinner. Our waiter was very prompt and our food was excellent. I can honestly say that we would enjoy another night there if we get the opportunity."

  • "This was my first time dinning at this restaurant. My waitress Sarah was very nice and informative. She knew her stuff and provided top notch service. This is a very classy high end place.However, I did not expect to receive tarter sauce and cocktail sauce in the low budget containers they came in. I would have liked to have seen it served in the little silver containers the other sauces are served in. Other than that I really enjoyed my dinning experience and look forward to going back again soon!"

  • "I had never been and typically am not a seafood fan...I LOVED it. Our waiter was extremely knowledgable and gave great recommendations, the food was amazing. I got a 5 oz filet mignon and a crab cake which was not on the menu but they were happy to accommodate me. For me crab cakes can be pretty hit or miss but this one was perfect! Not too fishy tasting but not just filler. I will definitely be recommending 42nd street to everyone"

  • "This was my first visit and I can not wait to return. Everything about 42nd Street was superb, but most especially the steamed oysters. Great service at the Oyster Bar. The waiter, an NC State student, was knowledgeable and attentive. I subbed collard greens for the slaw and they were excellent."

  • "We went for my dad and little brother's birthday dinner, and it was a perfect night. Great food, excellent service. Of course, having lived in Raleigh for nearly 27 years, I've visited 42nd Street more than a few times, and it's never disappointed. I recommend getting a reservation on Thursday - Saturday night, however, because it does tend to be crowded during those nights and you may find yourself waiting for a while."

  • "My husband and I have been to 42nd Street numerous times and have always enjoyed. During our most recent visit, to my surprise sitting behind our booth was two customers with their dog sitting in the booth with them and it was not a service animal. So for that reason I'm not sure when or if we will be dining there again."

  • "Business dinner for 7 out of town folks who were looking forward to a casual night out for oysters and champagne to celebrate a new business venture. Oysters were a hit and the bubbles kept flowing for a leisurely and thoroughly enjoyable evening. Server Nick was very professional and the overall service was great. Oyster selections were just great! Ahi Tuna was also superb! Love 42nd Street from years ago when it was a regular stomping grounds for both business and nights out with local friends. Just as I remembered and now a few new fans who will be coming back again during future visits to RDU."

  • "The raw oysters and fried green tomatoes were amazing, but the entrees were a letdown. I had the 42nd Platter with Mahi Mahi, my wife had pan seared scallops and my friend had Cajun spiced oysters and catfish. They were bland with little to no seasoning at all; very disappointing. Another thing I noticed was the grit left on the scallops, they were not cleaned. The rest of the experience was very good. This was our second trip and we are willing to give it another shot."

  • "Our waiter Aaron was a very personable young man. He answered all of our silly questions with a smile and never seemed to get rattled. He was very familiar with the menu and kept the ice cold IPA's coming like any good server would. This guy made our visit special for my wife which made me look like "The Man"."

  • "Hush puppies were delicious, and we had the oyster sample which was AMAZING. My boyfriend got a cheese potato as a side, which was really good, but it looked cheap--mashed potatoes in a tin with a bunch of cheese on top. I can make that at home, I thought to myself. I had the bacon wrapped scallion penne, and I was disappointed. I could taste the grill on my bacon and scallions, and I felt like it would have been way better sautéed or something. The sauce also reminded me of nacho cheese. My booth was awkwardly very close to a long table, so it was obnoxious to navigate past the people seated there. There was a screaming baby two tables over, which was not pleasant either. Nonetheless, I would still come again! The servers try hard!"

The oysters were fresh, bright tasting, and accompanied by delightful sauce options. The tuna was perfectly seared. Even the kids meal managed to combine my son's two favorite foods. Our waiter was charmingly awkward - new guy - but he hung in there with us, and everything was OK. I am delighted to have found this great place!"

Our main courses of shrimp and grits and crab cakes were well prepared and gave us more than enough to bring our leftovers home. We shared the apple pie with rum sauce for dessert - excellent! Overall, we were very happy with the friendly staff, good food, and comfortable atmosphere."

I called a few days ahead as soon as I knew we had more people and was relieved that the restaurant was willing to accommodate all 11 of us at our original time. When we showed up for the reservation, they were ready for us! The staff was great and very attentive - everyone enjoyed their dinner. :)"

  • "We had look forward to this dinner at 42nd Street Oyster Bar for 2 weeks! We ordered 2 (maine) lobsters meals and was very disappointed in that it's flavor and texture was not sweet and tender as expected, but was bland and tough. The steak (ordered with the lobster) was just ... o.k. We have been here before many times and in recent years found the food to be just ... o.k. Very overpriced - the cost of the meal is not equal to the quality of food. We did tell our waitress. The positive in all this is that we had a great waitress. We are not planning to return."

The service was great and we enjoyed the fact that the waiter made recommendations to us that were phenomenal, especially the fried green tomatoes. Being from the north we did not recognize the basket of goodies (Hush Puppies) left at our table at the start of the meal . My friend ordered a pasta dish and was very pleased while I ordered the steak and the crab legs. The crab legs were delicious however, the steak wrapped in bacon was not nearly as tasty. The steak was cooked as I had ordered (medium) but did not have a lot of flavor to it. Half way through our meal the light above us went out, the manager approached our table within minutes to offer to move us to a new table."

  • "I made reservations for 4 on-line. I was skeptical as to how that would work but it worked just fine. We were sitted as soon as the rest of our party arrived. We had an excellent server. She was personable and efficient. She was also able to accommodate a special request for an entree not on the evening menu. Due to their open floorplan, the restaurant is quite noisy but we were able to easily carry on a conversation. This was not my first time at this restaurant and certainly will not be my last. It is my favorite place when we visit Raleigh."

  • "As a part-time resident, we are always looking for new eateries. This establishment has great sea-food and a wonderful wait-staff. If you are into soup..the seafood bisque is wonderful. If swordfish topped w/crabmeat is on the menu, I highly recommend it."

Food was good but honestly I expected more of a variety understanding that oysters is the main attraction... I just thought there would be more variety Staff was great. Noticed some obvious regulars that got the royal treatment. Nice establishment with good food. I would go back but with a group."
