Been going to 42nd st OB for some years now and I'm starting to wonder why we go back. The food is just OK. They excel at steamed oysters and fried stuff, but the fin fish is too often either over or under cooked, veggies are tired and prices are equivalent to places where there is more attention to detail and imaginative preparation. I'd forgive the boring sauces and choices if the fish were cooked well, but everything just seems tired. Mixed drinks were loaded with ice and puny, and although the server was pleasant and tried to be attentive, she clearly had tables all over the room and spent more time walking between tables and the various stations she had to visit to get food etc This old school fat cat hangout has seen better days. Meh.

Our son just started Freshman year at NC State and his birthday was September 9th. Driving from Greensboro to celebrate, I looked for a restaurant close to campus, with good food and where the locals eat. Throw in a little history, great beer and wine selection, good food, and fun atmosphere. Don't let the name 'oyster bar and seafood grill' deter your visit

I was at 42nd years ago, and had the chance to go back a few days ago. It was much better than I remembered. Food was excellent, the service fantastic. We really enjoyed the evening. We had a late dinner and stayed to listen to the band, Neon Radio, which was also fun. We had a table as far away from the band as possible and it was great, could still talk, hear each other, and still hear the band. Great bar scene with the band as well. Nice wine list and a very good selection of local micro-brews. I highly recommend the place, very nice.

My wife and I had an excellent dining experience at 42nd Street. From service to food along with the friendliness from all the staff I rate this is as one of our favorite Seafood Restaurants in North Carolina. Thus my 5 star rating. The fresh oysters were fantastic and the energy around the oyster bar itself was fun and the atmosphere energetic. It was people having fun, enjoying good food. I just wish 42nd Street was in my hometown as I would visit often. Looking forward to our next visit.

We have eaten here many times and the food is always good. At our table, we had Ceasar salad with fried oysters, grilled swordfish and a combo platter with fish and oysters. We were a bit disappointed with the service as we had to ask for butter and sour cream for the potatoes, cocktail sauce, tartar sauce, and additional ice for the tea...all these items should have been served automatically. We even had to send back the iced tea as it was so weak there was hardly any color. Although we expect some noise, there was a table close to us that was very loud and distracting. All things considered, we'll go back but our expectations won't be at the same high level. The hush puppies were soooo good! A good place for great seafood.

Four of us visited on a Monday evening about 6:45 and as expected at that time, no wait at all. We ate at a peninsula at the oyster bar. Oysters were very good. Our sucker, Jacob, beside being fast and efficient was fun, witty and added a lot to the experience. The character & ambiance was just ordinary. In fact the restaurant in general seemed drab & worn. It was a lot like any other mid priced eatery anywhere. The women's restrooms were clean but a bit in need of refurbishing. Keep the clever quotes. The large entrance planters were absolutely beautiful!

Food was excellent, except the key lime pie. It was not the best I have eaten. For a romantic dinner, as listed, it has too much noise and hustle bustle for anything romantic. (Maybe we are too old). Can't imagine what it would be like if the restaurant had been full. Server was great, very personable, helpful and attentive. We wondered why it has been so long since we last ate there. Nice outing!

We went for dinner during Downtown Raleigh Restaurant Week. The appetizer (scallops) and the wine were very good, but the rest of the meal was quite a disappointment. I ordered the "Shrimp and Lump Crabmeat with Sauteed Red Bell Pepper served in a roasted poblano cream sauce." What I got was a large lump of creamy pasta (not mentioned in the entree description at all!) with a few small, boring shrimp and a few bits of crab that were about the size of a pencil eraser. The key lime pie was not good at all -- a premade, tasteless graham cracker crust and lime filling that was quite dull. This was our first trip to 42nd Street Oyster Bar (we are relatively new to the area) and it will also be our last. For $100+, we expected much better.

I made our reservation a week in advance for a party of 8. We got there to find out they plopped us in front of the door, at the oyster bar, in bar stools. For a "fine" dining establishment if you are going to put 50+age women in wobbly bar stools a notification should be made. We expressed our dissatisfaction immediately and was told by the waitress there was nothing they could do. No apology, no nothing! Just embarrassing for me as I had highly recommended the restaurant to my friends. Don't think they'll be back.

We chose the prix fixe menu. I was disappointed that pimento oysters was on the oyster sampler. Too heavy and can't taste the oyster. The cioppino was not the same as I last had. It was not the well seasoned broth I had before, instead it was tomato, onion and green pepper overwhelming the seafood. My husband got the scallops wrapped in bacon but wanted the bacon crisper. He said his swordfish was ok but didn't like the mango salsa.

We were very disappointed with the oysters being too small and muddy. The Cioppino was a bad tomato basil soup with undercooked shrimp, some raw. The clam chowder was weak with a chicken stock taste. The swordfish was very dry and bland. The shrimp and crabmeat fettuccine was good, this was enjoyable. Very disappointed in the restaurant, especially for the high price. The wait staff at the oyster bar was wonderful and deserve praise for a good job. We will not come back!

In general, the food has really gone downhill: went for Restaurant week special menu: baked oysters were uneven--some overdone, some underdone: main courses were very poor: seafood and pasta was cold and the sauce tasted of flour: the piece of swordfish was miniscule and the sauce cold: deserts were excellent and service was attentive

We went for Raleigh Restaurant Week. The restaurant was full of folks that seemed to be having a good time and enjoying their experience. The menu was great. the baked clams appetizer was fantastic and enough for a meal on its own (6 clams, 3 different kinds). we chose the wine paring which was delightful. Our wait staff (sorry the I cannot remember her name) was helpful, courteous and provided just the right about of checking in with us.

If you're a seafood lover, the oyster bar is the place to be. Arrive early or make a reservation to get table-style seating at the oyster bar (seats 4-6). Completely different atmosphere than the main dining room area (informal v. formal) and some menu items are only available at the oyster bar, but both are an amazing dining experience. Staff is personable but professional and the excellent service made our meal that much more enjoyable.
