Diner Reviews
  • "I hadn't been back since the renovation but the restaurant is much improved. Food and ambiance was great, noise level, moderate. We had reservations so we were seated immediately."

  • "Since the last time I dined at 42, the menu has changed and it is much improved. Previously, it was formal and stuffy, and the food was pretentious and expensive. Now, the menu is much more modern and fun, including a nice tapas selection. And the view remains spectacular."

  • "Service was good but food was desparately lacking flavor. Overal the dishes were bland, even the ones described as spicy. Had high expecations for this restaurant due to location at Ritz and also price point. Management's response on site was good; however, not planning on revisiting."

  • "Nice view but food was ordinary. Overall not worth the price of admission."

  • "The view is good and the appetizers and Kale salad were good except for one of our party's salad ordered as a main with grilled chicken, which came with 2 large chicken breasts grilled but not in the salad. Not good., and very poor presentation main course of halibut was very small and very bland. sauce added very little to it and at 33 dollars very overprice for that quality. Desert was good but DJ came on and was very loud in the dining area such that we had to move our table bc we were literally yelling to hear. All in all the only time to go back is restaurant week"

  • "42 has lost some of its luster. Having had great dinners there previously, this past visit was a bit disappointing. A stingy little basket of dried-out breadsticks was their bread offering. The sauce on the "lemon" chicken I ordered was so sour and bitter, i had to scrape it off the meat to make it edible. The desserts were so non-descript, I don't even remember what they were. Yes, the service was great and the view spectacular, but for those prices, I would expect the food to be also."

  • "A friend recommended 42 as a good option for my anniversary dinner. Very glad she did. Great view. Wonderful food and terrific service. The entrees looked good but my wife and I decided on the tapas menu and we think we made the right decision. Would highly recommend."

  • "I am very disappointed at this restaurant. I made a reservation for a group of 9. Upon arrival, we were brought to a table by the window that seem quite nice, until we sat down. The height of the table was significant above normal, creating a very uncomfortable condition for eating. We asked for another table, but there was not one available of the required capacity. We were told that "the carpenter had made a mistake and the table was taller than normal", and were offered cushions as boosters. We felt like children in a restaurant for grown-ups. It was really hard to believe that this was actually happening. Other than the cushions, there was no visible concern about the condition, it seem that it was regarded as normal."

  • "Service was a little inconsistent. Sometimes very attentive, sometimes very forgetful. Tapas are the way to go."

  • "There is certainly nothing 'wrong' with 42 but otherwise than the great view, there us nothing outstanding either. It is a very solid '7'. There are some interesting menu choices. My three colleagues all had something different and other than a comment on the size of the very large shrimp, nobody said anything bad or good about the meal. I had the veggie paella and kale Caesar salad. I would not have that again. The salad was pretty bland and not very 'caesary'. The paella was OK but rather bland as well too."

  • "Loved 42's ambiance. It's perfect to take a special someone for a night out. It's dim lit with amazing views of the city. The good is nothing spectacular though. That's been my take having dined there two times. From appetizers to entrees to desserts, nothing is out of this world. Just "good". 3/5 stars"

  • "42 has delicious food and an outstanding staff. However the reason we chose to dine here for a special occasion was to enjoy the skyline views. We were seated at a 2-person table against a wall, right next to the kitchen entrance. There was a 2-person table available against the panoramic windows, which we asked to be seated at. Our waiter checked and told us that they were not allowed to move seating that night. We kept an eye on that table for the remainder of the evening and NO ONE claimed it. While we enjoyed the food, we definitely hated the dark corner we were shoved in when a much better table was available."

  • "Breathtaking view of White Plains, LI Sound, Kensico Dam, etc. Friendly, attentive service by a small army of servers. Delicious, inventive cuisine- do NOT miss the bread basket- $7 & worth every penny for a basket brimming with goodies + 3 delicious spreads. 42 is a must for that special occasion !"

  • "I went during Restaurant Week with 3 others. The waiter was very attentive and helpful; the menu offered was only the Restaurant Week menu. Although the appetizers were good the entrees were only mediocre. The desserts were good as well. The room décor is lovely and the view was attractive. I expected more. The bar area was packed and looked like a fun experience for a young crowd; but more of an emphasis should be placed in the restaurant area on the food."

  • "It was my first visit to 42. The food and service was excellent. If you are looking for a place to have a lovely experience, 42 is the place to go. I was there for a group lunch with my co-workers and we all enjoy it. I can't imagine that an evening dinner would not be just as enjoyable."

  • "This food was so good I can't believe I waited so long to try it. Most places don't really do much to their chicken, but it was seasoned and not the least bit dry!"

  • "42 is just an amazing place!!! The food is truely unique and outstanding........!!!! The overall ambiance of the restaurant coupled with the views are spectacular!!! The service was also amazing the servers were attentive and just a pleasure. The place in Westchester for a special occasion.........or any day to treat your self to a great night out! Additionally, after dinner we went to the bar to continue to enjoy the beautiful views with the great music! Love 42!!!!"

  • "Me and my girlfriend went to 42 for restaurant week - appeared to be an affordable experience to go to a high end restaurant. As expected, the drinks were expensive - in fact, no "reasonably priced" bottles of wine (under $45). Settled for wine @ $10 / glass. Food on special menu was good - we did not order any of the "add-ons". Despite the great view, the music playing in the background was terrible - it should stay in the bar area only if thats what the bar scene needs. I dont know if we can afford to go back to this place with the regular prices"

  • "Food was bland, service was ok, 20% gratuity incl. on tab., which i think is not appropriate."

  • "We felt scammed at this restaurant, we went during restaurant week and expected a $30 menu, but we're surprised that most items required a surcharge. In one case this extra charge was $30 for the main course. They would not allow ordering from the main menu. Service was not great, had to ask for refills, tell the waiter to clean the table. This should not happen in a place that is supposedly a top restaurant. They also had an expensive corkage fee of $35 per bottle, okay I can accept that since the place is supposedly at rated very highly. However automatically adding 20% tip on the corkage fee is outrageous. Although the view was great go to BLT on the first floor, there you will get a great meal, that's where you will find all of us!"

  • "View - BEAUTIFUL! Food - disappointing We went during Restaurant Week and my fish and chips (menu price $27) were not very good- too breaded and fried. My husband's chicken was good, but very small. All in all, I'd go back for cocktails only."

  • "I dined with a friend for Restaurant Week. We both had the beet salad for starters and loved it. I had the half roasted chicken with potato croquet and pickled vegetables. The chicken was very tasty, but a little under cooked (pick by the bone) and I was not so crazy about the pickled vegetables, but the potato croquet was good. We both had the fruit over custard for dessert which I would definitely recommend."

  • "This is a high end restaurant so you expect a lot. I have been there several times and this past time was short of expectations. The new renovations makes the place extremely noisy and for these prices I would expect something a little quieter. Left with a headache from all the chatter. Had to ask for our bread. Service was also not the same. Food is very good but even during restaurant week dinner for two cost us $170. Have to think about this going forward."

  • "The food was exquisite!!! The ambience was great and I would go back there in a heart beat."

  • "We went during restaurant week. My advice: go early. We went around 5:00, and the place was almost empty (by the time we left, it was full), and got a table with a great view, which is what this place is all about. The menu was limited, unless you are willing to pay pretty stiff additional fees for dishes most would rather order, and, taste was sacrificed for concept. One example: the fish and chips. The fish came in little balls, were not breaded, and the "chips " are not potatoes: they are chick peas molded into three small bricks that don't resemble anything like chips. To be fair, the waiter explained this to us before we ordered, but for all the fancy ingredients, the dish lacked taste. Go to the bar for the view; skip the restaurant."

  • "Staff trying to rush customers to make decision My first two choices of wine.. were not in stock.. I spent $64/bottle and got little wine cups music was blasting in the dining. Pop music may not be best choice for dining room."

  • "We celebrated our 26th Anniversary with a special dinner at 42 Restaurant. We arrived purposefully 45 minutes before our reservations and took advantaged of the daylight to enjoy the views. Although the restaurant was busy the servers were courteous and friendly. My husband requested to have both our entrees (pasta and fish) split and served together. The Chef graciously honored our request. Everything we ordered from appetizers to dessert were flavorful and the presentation exquisite! Looking forward to our next visit at 42 Restaurant!"

  • "Went during restaurant week and final tab was still $240 for two. Food was good but prices are out of sight. Security is comical, asking last name to confirm a reservation then asking what is your first name. Became burdensome and interrupted my conversation with my guest."

  • "Wonderful upscale restaurant. Great for couples or small groups. Service was great and meal delicious and interesting. I would go back. A good place to take advantage of during restaurant week."

  • "EXCELLENT AND ATTENTIVE SERVICE, QUIET RELAXED ATMOSPHERE, GREAT SELECTION FOR RESTAURANT WEEK WITH A VARIETY OF FOOD CHOICES, GOOD FOOD. WHILE THE VIEWS OF DOWNTOWN WHITE PLAINS ARENT THE GREATEST, THE FAR OFF VIEWS OF THE LONG ISLAND SOUND AND THE SUBURBS AND PARKS IN THE DISTANCE MAKE UP FOR IT."
    Dined on 3/13/2014
  • "While it was a reduced price menu for restaurant week, the up-charges for certain dishes was extreme ($30) for steak. The food was ok and the service was fine. However, for such an up-scale price list (not during restaurant week), I would have expected the service to be more sophisticated. The view was great. P.S. The chairs are too low for the tables - at least by the window."
    Dined on 3/13/2014
  • "The view did not live up to expectations. One thing that I've learned is that White Plains is not a very pretty city from 42 floors up. The food was good but not great. Everything that I had, very simply needed more seasoning! A "birthday cake" desert turned out to be a profound disappointment. Cake was dry and the whip cream was actually gritty, seemingly because they used sugar crystals instead of powered sugar to make it. Basic cooking 101 mistakes that I would not expect from a highly rated establishment. Service from staff was "acceptable" but certainly did not leave any lasting impression. Definitely not what I was expecting from a high end restaurant and I do not believe that I will be dining there again any time soon."
