Diner Reviews
  • "We had an amazing dinner at 404. It was one of those nights that everything was absolutely perfect. The menu is simple and fresh. Service was impeccable. We had a reservation but chose the bar so we could sit next to each other. The sommelier recommended a wine that we will crave and seek out. On top of first class service and food it was friendly. We absolutely enjoyed talking to various employees and felt welcome to the point it feels like a neighborhood restaurant but yet gets national accolades. We can't wait to go back! Thank you for a perfect evening!"

  • "We are real foodies, we choose 404 as it was listed #3 on Southern Livings Best of the South. The Cobia starter was great but Swordfish was to fishy to eat and Pork Raggot was like soup with many tomatoes and noodles and a little stringy pork. Neither lived up to 404's reputation. There were flies it was hot & sun was so bright, I had to wear sunglasses."

  • "We had a delicious dinner at Kitchen 404--chicken liver pate for a starter, rabbit gnudi and Louisiana drum for entrees, and shortbread with blueberries and lemon cream for dessert. Everything exceeded our expectations--from taste to presentation. This is a small restaurant, with tables close to each other, but that just added to the unique atmosphere. The service was outstanding. Our only recommendation is to add more French wines (Rhone and southern France areas). We highly recommend Kitchen 404, and will return there soon."

  • "Outstanding in every way. Outrageously good food & cocktails. Great staff. Warm ambience. Haven't seen the boutique hotel, but halfway through dinner, my companion and I were fantasizing about living in the hotel and taking all our meals at 404 Kitchen. It's that good."

  • "Great food, well curated bev program, knowledgeable servers.. Only issue was sitting outdoors right by a sewer manhole that was giving us a good whiff of funk that was hard to ignore"

  • "Everything spot on again. Apps creative. Chicken sear was perfect. Swordfish cooked perfectly. Most knowledgeful wine staff in Nashville. If you go before 6:30, take your sunglasses. Sure sign of a regular."

  • "What a lovely restaurant. The food was truly divine tasting. I tried the Rabbit and I would definitely order it again. I also was quite surprised at the eclectic wine list. I tried some amazing wines that I had never heard of before. The service was outstanding, and the servers very knowledgeable and helpful with their recommendations. This restaurant has a long future ahead of it. Very happy I found it."

  • "Fresh ingredients carefully prepared. Excellent service. Pricey wine. Located in a "hip" part of town. Visiting on business from Atlanta and found it a "treat"."

  • "this was our second visit to 404 and I look forward to many more meals here. The kitchen really pays attention to the food--textures, flavors, and small surprises like the use of fresh fruits. Nothing is overwhelming or in your face. Because the restaurant is so small, the service is very attentive from everyone on the floor. Truly, a wonderful gem in Nashville."

  • "Excellent food. Top service. Unique choices of wine and whisky. I recommend it. About time Nashville had something like this. Not your standard fare."

  • "I have dined at 404 twice, and both meals were excellent. The food is prepared with such precision and care, nothing is overlooked. Service is excellent."

  • "The food was some of the best we have had in Nashville. The pimento cheese, Rabbit dish and grilled Okra were the standouts!"

  • "We celebrated our wedding anniversary at 404 Kitchen and it was fantastic! We really loved the charcuterie plate, the perfectly poached egg, a study of clams and the peach & pork ragout. The skillet cookie was also great. I highly recommend this restaurant!"

  • "It's a tiny, intimate space with absolutely the BEST service and most delicious, creative food. The swordfish with summer succotash was out of this world, the cornbread with sorghum whiskey butter was amazing, and their twist on bananas foster was the best way to end the meal! The tables are close together, so we were able to meet our neighbors - this made it such a sweet, intimate experience. I highly recommend it! (Parking in the Gulch is super frustrating... but it's worth it.)"

  • "Our food was very good- again! The Rabbit Liver Pate we had for an appetizer was just delicious. Our waitress was a bit off- while service was ok her attitude could have taken a hike. I would have preferred the nice waitress who was helping the table next to us. The Sommelier was AWESOME. Very very knowledgeable and found a wine for our rabbit and fish dish- which was not an easy task. And it was affordable without us requesting it be. This place is yummy and small which is nice change of pace from some of the larger restaurants coming into town."

  • "Was recommended by a friend to try this 'talked about' restaurant. Glad I did. The food was top notch. Not your typical fancy restaurant choices. I actually tried some dishes that I had never heard of. I had the buratta appetizer which is now a favorite. I tried the Swordfish as a main plate and the skillet cornbread and baby carrots as sides. Delicious. My date, a whisky guy, also told me that they had one of the best selections of whisky that he had seen. I loved the wine list, myself. Overall, this experience has raised the bar for all future restaurants visits. Be back soon!"

  • " From the beginning of the evening to the end, I felt that I was in an extremely unique place. I began with one of the specialty cocktails that they seem to be so well known for called, The Nearest Green. What an amazing drink! I then went on to the wine list. This list was exceptional. The choices were plentiful and there seemed to be some rare and uncommon sections that made this particular list exclusive. The menu choices were distinctive (try the rabbit!) The operating manager, Travis (also the genius in charge of the winelist, a noted sommelier) was gracious and interesting to speak with. All in all, if you miss dining at this fantastic restaurant you will have missed a wonderful experience. I will be a frequent guest."

  • "Wow. Finally Nashville is a restaurant town I can be proud of! Not only is the food the best in town but the big surprise was the wine list. Amazing selection of great stuff that you just can't get anywhere else. Admittedly, I had never heard of some of it, but the waiter brought over the sommelier( that's right!) and he suggested the perfect pair without making me feel like an idiot. Had an Oregon white to start and a bottle of Tannat (seriously!) with the tri-tip. I don't ever eat much tri-tip but after the 404 I am a big fan. We had a crudo (raw fish with pickled strawberries!) to start. UNBELIEVABLE! I have had some great meals in Nashville but this is my new fave! Keep it up guys!"

  • "Very diverse ingredient list (pea tendrils, nettles, ramp, saba, etc.) with excellent execution. I had to google "polpettine, brebis and hakurei" among others to see what I would be eating. The Cioppino was "mild" (I prefer more garlic, fennel and red pepper). The Tri-tip cooked perfectly med-rare but I could not "taste" the 70 day dry ageing (tho the ramp risoptto side dish was balanced and creamy). The wine list was diverse and well chosen but I would stick to the cocktails here because of the quality of their concoctions."

  • "Great experience from the time we walked thru the door. Small, but very comfortable dining space with dinner service at the bar (we ended up eating at the bar instead of our table as the noise level can be a bit overwhelming from other tables). Knowledgeable, friendly, attentive staff to compliment the wonderfully fresh food."

  • "My four friends and I loved our meals at the 404 Kitchen. The food and waitress were outstanding. Our waitress found on oaky Chardonnay that was not on the menu has a bottle option. She chilled it and ensured a second bottle was chilling "just in case." The heirloom tomato tart and cheese plate appetizers are great. I highly recommend those and the swordfish entree."

  • "My only (tiny) complaint is that the setting sun blinded me through the windows for a little while, but the food and service more than compensated. I would gladly recommend 404 Kitchen to the most demanding foodie--everything I had was excellent."

  • "Nashville is fortunate to have such a star addition to the restaurant options. The chef must be a cracker-jack, because the food is delightfully gourmet without being fussy. Our fish and summer vegetables were beautifully prepared, the sauces so natural. The wine list is superb, possibly because the owner/manager is a former sommelier of first rate quality and affability. We are going back soon."

  • "Worth the wait to get a reservation at this tiny gem. Nice bar menu, great service by a knowledgable server, well-planned menu. Our table had rabbit, chicken, tile and swordfish. All wonderful, fresh, bright flavors. House made mozzarella app and tomato tart were fabulous. Can't wait to return."

  • "Menu read really well and the look and feel of the restaurant were great but when the food arrived at our table we were completely underwhelmed by the executed dishes. The crudo was drenched in a sauce (gruner?) that was so overwhelming and pungent it could have been any protein underneath and we wouldn't have noticed it. Another shocking complete miss was the farm fresh poached egg, all of the singular elements sound great but what is delivered is a bunch of asparagus and egg sitting in a bowl of oil. Great tasting oil but an entire bowl of it was completely unnecessary. Anyways the one really Great bright spot was service, our server was attentive friendly and very knowledgable. My Suggestion is the kitchen learns some balance"

  • "My parents live in the Gulch so we decided to try The 404 Kitchen and it did not disappoint. Delicious food, great staff and well worth the wait for a table. My mom is very picky and she loved it so it's gotta be good, right? Def give this place a try, I doubt you'll be disappointed."

  • "I was eager to try the 404 after securing a 7:30 reservation with about 4 wks lead time. The 404 was easy to find in the Gulch (just across from Urban Outfitters), valet was convenient, and we were seated right away. I heard the restaurant was small, and it was as was our table; I would recommend for 2-4 people rather than a larger party. We started w/ the tomato galette which was ok; presentation was beautiful, but the ricotta filled pastry was lacking. For entrees we tried the peach/pork ragout and tri-tip with a side of cornbread, and the skillet cookie for dessert (yum). All were delicious. Overall a great experience w/ GREAT service; would def go back. If only 2 of you, might be able to walk in and sit at the bar w/o a reservation."

  • "Nashville has too many trendy and heavy food establishments. 404 is a lovely combination of energetic, and intriguing creations with an eye to clean and clear flavors and presentations. We felt like we were in California with a nod to the south. Keep up the good work: do not get too elaborate, too trendy, or too southern!"

  • "Ever since 404 opened, my girlfriend and I just did not consider any other restaurant in the Gulch. Currently, 404 stands as the 2nd best restaurant in Nashville behind Cat Bird. It's better than Watermark, Sambuca, Husk, you name it. There's no comparison. Their menu changes everyday, but everything on it is a winner. Their tri tip and chicken breast are my 2 favorites."

  • "This may very well be the best meal in Nasville. It is without any question in the top 5. I hesitate to say more for fear that it will get too poplar to get a reservation."

  • "I read about the 404 Kitchen while researching new Nashville restaurants. The menu, service and atmosphere did not disappoint. I had the Chioppino and it was wonderful. We also split the banana and peanut butter dessert."

  • "404 Kitchen is tiny. There are supposedly 40 seats inside, but the room feels smaller. Our server was excellent; never there when we didn't need him, but always close by when we did. We opted for a 2 course dinner (starter + mains) with one drink for each course. The two mixed drinks I had were slightly above average, but not excellent. Pricing was pretty high given quality. My wife enjoyed an interesting red wine and a local beer, both of which were better than average and also slightly expensive. First course was a cheese plate, which was above average. Mains were both excellent. The peach pork ragout is a top 5 Nashville meal for me. In the end, the main quality more than offset the nature of the first course. Will surely try again."

  • "I'm a New Yorker with a great passion for fine (fortunately or not, haha) and have tried many of the top restaurants and clearly New York City isn't lacking great restaurants. 404 however ranks in among the top restaurant in its category at a totally reasonable price. This has been my second time at 404 kitchen and the food and spice combination is simply divine. Our waitress, which was the same one who waited on us last time, has superb knowledge and her wine suggestion for each course couldn't have been better! I will certainly be back and cannot wait for my next meal there! Great job!!"
