Diner Reviews
  • "We went to 317 while on vacation and loved it! The food is fresh, expertly-prepared, and delicious. We had a Vidalla onion soup that was superb, a great cheese platter, and two salads to start. We loved the soup so much that the chef came out and gave us hints on how to make it. (Which we did the next day.) Our entrees were scallops and a seafood "stew." All were superb and we'll-presented. The desserts were amazing but massive -can easily be shared by 3-4. The wine list covers all the varietals you would want, but there are only a few choices of each. You should be able to find a good pairing with any dish. Service was fantastic. Friendly and accommodating staff all around. Book your reservation today!"

  • "Nice atmosphere and great food, without too much fuss. Waiter was unobtrusively there when needed. Some confusion on what was/was not GF, but a clearly-marked menue was provided. We took our time over dinner and desert, with no pressure to finish. Great way to show an out-of-town guest what Syracuse has to offer!"

  • "Service was welcoming, attentive, and gracious. The owners were present and engaging. The food was creative and outstanding. The decor was handsome and appropriate for a historic building in downtown Syracuse: warm woods, original tin ceiling, original art work on the walls. Quantities were just right for us weight conscious folks. This was our first visit to a recently opened restaurant, and we will be back for more. We will highly recommend 317 to friends."

  • "Fantastic dining experience... food was complex, but not overly pretentious or experimental. Atmosphere was perfect for a romantic dinner. Severs were knowledgable and attentive, but not overly intrusive. Overall a great first experience and will certainly be back. "

  • "Went to 317 @ M.S. to celebrate our son's graduation from SU, which fell on Mother's Day. I found the restaurant online and made a reservation based on the positive reviews. It didn't disappoint. The brunch menu had a number of very creative culinary offerings - the favorite was the duck bacon. We sat in the window with sunlight steaming in and a view of the three beautiful churches nearby. The interior of the restaurant is delightful, and the service attentive and personal. "

  • "The portions are generous, and the bread was warm (with homemade flavored butter!) but I was kind of bummed that the service was so rushed. I had not finished eating yet (in fact, had about 2 bites left) and the server already cleared off my dad's plate. I felt really rushed. This happened with my mom too when she went with my sister. Further, when they cleared off my appetizer, they took my silverware and forgot to replace it (so I had nothing to eat the main course with!). For the price, the portions are good, and it was tasty for Syracuse (I'm a big city foodie, so I get that a college town's options are not the same). Worth it if you want a nice dinner downtown. I just hope that the service improves a little."

  • "I read the wonderful reviews other patrons posted and chose 317 to celebrate my daughter's graduation from Syracuse University on Saturday night. The lamb chops that I ordered medium were served seared on the outside and raw inside as was my daughter's filet mignon that she also ordered medium. Both dishes were sent back to the kitchen two times with relatively no change and were left uneaten. The two ravioli dishes were heavy and tasteless. The halibut was nicely prepared, but the portion was so small, it was consumed in three bites. I wanted that night to be really special, and it could not have been less so. "

  • "We were seated on time. Menu in window didn't match menu which likely changes daily. Soup described as lobster bisque was almost inedible. Not a drop of cream. Was orange colored pureed carrots and celery. Halibut was delicious. Service wasn't great considering restaurant was half full. Waitress said there were three ravioli in the entree when it arrived there were 5. Overall overpriced."

  • "Great Service, cute place but wasn't crazy about the food."

  • "The menu items were not standard fare. However, the food was delicious. Our waitress did not have answers for some menu items. She had to go back and ask the chef. "

  • "Nice to have a great fine dining option in downtown Syracuse. As a former resident of Chicago & Philly, I miss the small quaint restaurants where you can get a great meal and wine. 317 at Montgomery has everything you could want! Amazing meal and great menu options no matter what your tastes are. My date had a great chicken dish with morel mushrooms and I had a spectacular pork dish that was prepared to perfection. We skipped the 1st course but the chef prepared us a complimentary sample of a lamb appetizer with a great compote that was spectacular. The micro salad with asparagus and pancetta with a poached egg was delicious. Wine choices were good plus I like that they have a pairing options including a 5 course tasting menu option too!"

  • "Everything about our dining experience was wonderful. The food was different than what we have found elsewhere. Service was excellent. Our waiter was knowledgeable, funny and very pleasant. He neither rushed us or ignored us. I felt relaxed when I left. Definitely will share this find to others. "

  • "Love this new restaurant in Syracuse! Food was wonderful. Can't wait to go back to try the 5 course tasting with wine! Only thing lacking is a more extensive wine list."

  • "the location has always had an interesting restaurant for many years - but this is it's best reincarnation. The food is wonderful, the ambience is perfect, the staff absolutely marvelous -- can I find any more words to describe it?? my new favorite restaurant (at least downtown) although they give some of my outlying faves a run for their money. Must try -- the Calamari is the best I've EVER had!!"

  • "The menu is 3 courses, each with it's own price. All 3 would cost about $40-$50 for dinner. I ordered duck. The portion was tiny and very chewy. My wife tried it and spit it out. Her tuna was a good portion, but bland and tasteless. Many better options in Syracuse. For two people, 2 courses each plus a $38 bottle of wine was $112 plus tip. Not worth it"

  • "We enjoyed a delicious brunch in a pleasing, quiet and homey atmosphere. The experience was just as I wanted it to be. Our waiter was helpful and personable. The owner stopped by our table to inquire about our satisfaction with the offerings. The Bloody Mary was the best I've had! The lamb was pink and juicy - delicious. "

  • "We were visiting our daughter who attends Syracuse University and made reservations for Easter Brunch. Our meal was perfect from start to finish. I will be visiting 317 each time I visit SU!"

  • "Asparagus salad was great. The "special" fish dish was over-cooked. The fish was served with over cooked and over salted baby potatoes. Big fail. Was not impressed with the duck entree either. Why would you serve chopped up bits of duck leg, instead of a nice crisp whole? Bill came to about $100, so this place is on the expensive side for the city. I'm giving it a good because we had good salads and the waitstaff were great and attentive. Just check your bill carefully. I was accidentally charged for a bottle of wine instead of the glass I ordered."

  • "We were so pleased that our second visit to 317 was as good as the month before. The salads are creative and delicious. I had a wonderful scallop dish and my husband had a delicious special with halibut. The service is terrific as well as attentive. The restaurant provides a soothing setting with local art on display. The wind list is also very good. I would highly recommend this downtown restaurant particularly if you are also attending Syracuse Stage or Famous Artists for a show. "

  • "Loved this restaurant! The host/owner is super friendly and visited each table to make sure everyone was satisfied. The staff is very friendly and helpful, another waitress even stopped at our table to tell us about the desserts when she noticed our waitress was busy with a large party. The food is amazing. Very fresh and wonderfully presented. We had the fried calamari appetizer which was not your usual rings, but strips of tender calamari. Really good. We will be back for sure!"

  • "This is listed as one of best restaurants in Syracuse so was expecting perfection. We got helpful friendly staff, creative delicious food. Tasting menu served by the chef himself. Staff could be more polished. Wine pairings with tasting not introduced until we asked. Waitress unsure of whether entire table had to do tasting menu or if only a few of us could. Some of food design could be elevated. Fish course had perfectly cooked fish and inventive, stuffed whole calamari. Calamari is always tough to cut and odd to look at. The stuffing wasn't delicious enough to overcome the challenge in eating it. It was all on a bed of spinach which was too bitter. Other dishes including a scallop dish and a lamb chop dish were perfect ."

  • "This spot has housed a number of restaurants. (2 prior that I visited) The new owners have taken the level of the cuisine up several notches. I was with a large group. Everyone enjoyed the food and drink. The owner and servers were very solicitous and helpful. I think the experience was in the top 5% of fine dining experiences in town."

  • "With the dining week special extended for a third week we enjoyed a delightful 4 course meal. A quail chartreuse appetizer, a pumpkin soup or harvest salad, lobster encrusted salmon, butternut squash ravioli. So many great choices. Flavors were bright and fresh. The staff were all very attentive and pleasant. The owner made several visits to our table, very much interested in our opinions and aimed to please. The only negatives were that there is only a beer or wine list, and our waitress was not familiar with the menu. She was however, quick to find out the answers to our questions. I look forward to returning for their seasonal menu changes the owner spoke to us about."

  • "new chef and some remodeling really put some life back in this location. we did the chef's tasting and had some menu items, some off menu---trout with vanilla butter sauce, sound odd but so delicious! the food was awesome and the place was hopping during dining week. looking forward to going back and trying everything on the menu. i thought the tasting menu was a bargain for what you get. dining week menu also a good deal, but regular menu is appropriately priced for the items"

  • "Well worth a return visit for the food alone. The atmosphere is warm and pleasant. The decor is nicely done with exposed brickwork, antique framed objects on the wall and nice low lighting. We had the duck dish and the veal bouillabaisse. The duck was extraordinary, well prepared and very tender. The veal dish was somewhat lacking in veal but packed with flavor. Both dishes were served with freshly made pasta. Our server , while very pleasant and friendly, was somewhat lacking in her knowledge of the menu items and their preparation. A little more training and experience and she would be a good server. Overall, 317 was a great experience for the food and atmosphere."

  • "we were there to try their dining week menu. we had the lamb meatballs and fried squid for apetizers. they were good, although the meatballs had strong mutten smell. soup and salad were fine. we were a little disappointed that the duck ragout in the third course was replaced by a "veal" dish. salmon was fresh enough to cook to "medium" without fishy smell. the "veal" dish was apparently just a pasta and tomato sauce dish. the sauce tasted good but veal and cheese were not seen. we should have asked how the dish ws like before ordering it. Drink selection was adequate with moderate price. service was friendly and prompt. the place has an interesting downtown atmosphere with tables close to each other. the regular menu is in high price range."

  • "This restaurant had only been open a week, so I fully expect to go back and enjoy it when the kinks are worked out. Food was a bit cold, very tasty though. Outstanding environment, should be a local hot spot once they get it all figured out. Menu looked like it had a great variety of options too."

  • "lovely ambience, outstanding food, good (and moderately priced) wines. Service a bit lacking - dont care to be addressed as "you guys" and asked repeatedly to "just grab your forks off the plates" (as they are being cleared from course to course) Would definitely return but try for a different server"

  • "We dined during dining week and the restaurant was full! I don't think they normally are booked, so the service was quite slow. It took 45 mins before we got our appetizers and over and hour and a half to get our dinners. Again, I don't believe this would be the norm. Our server was kind and acknowledged our wait numerous times. The ambience make it enjoyable to wait so long. Dimmed lights and beautiful old building feel. The food was outstanding! We had calamari, which I'm still thinking about and a lobster crusted salmon/ duck ragout. Both were fantastic!"

  • "Ate here for restaurant week with a party of 5 so tried a number of different dishes. Most were tasty. Menu was unique. Lamb appetizer was amazing. Sweet potato duck soup-outstanding. Loved the parsnip puree with the brisket dish. A few disappointments- vegetarian entree (version of aracini using pasta instead) was really bland. Desserts were creative in theory but didn't taste great. No chocolate offering either. Server was very friendly and good-natured, but lacked the knowledge and attentiveness expected at a pricier restaurant (didn't know how to pronounce a few dishes, couldn't articulate how they tasted). Had to ask for beverage refills (water and wine). Dirty dishes weren't removed without asking. Potential for sure."

  • "I was worried that I was too late to make a reservation, but the crew at 317 was amazingly accommodating. The service was amazing, from the front door until the wave goodbye. It has an excellent vibe for the "young professional", and 317 could hold its own in competition with NYC restaurants."

  • "We came home for the holidays and wanted to try something new in my husband's hometown. We expected to spend a little more and most selections were closer to 30$ per plate. I ordered a steak that was served over noodles that were a little salty for my tasted, however my husband ordered short ribs, that were amazing!! Overall we had a good experience but I'm not sure we'd go again."

  • "317 came to us with very high marks and we couldn’t wait to experience it… well- we loved it. Food drinks and service was outstanding. I just couldn’t believe we were only one of four other couples. This place should have been rocking on a Friday night. We both are looking forward to our next visit soon!"
