This eclectic bistro has it all; great ambiance, fantastic food, an extensive wine list. The menu can best be described as extraordinary casual farm to table cuisine, where Chef Scott Schwartz paints a playground for the palette using the freshest ingredients sourced from local fisherman, farms and our own onsite garden.
Three time winner of the "Best of Jacksonville" 29 South was recently awarded a "Snail of Approval" and "Spirit of Slow Food" by Slow Food USA.

  • "Was really excited to bring dine at 29 South based on the reviews; however, it was very disappointing. And, embarrassing as we had out of town "foodie" friends with us. The most disappointing was the lack of seasoning as the presentations were very good. I love the fact that they embrace "farm to table"; however, not one of the dishes had a 'wow' taste. We tried the two fish specials; great presentation, fish was cooked perfectly but overall the entrée just wasn't seasoned well .... and, I'm not just talking about salt. The most disappointing was a southern favorite; "Shrimp & Grits". How can you possibly screw it up?!?!?!? Well, they did! First, it was more like a "Tempera Shrimp and Grits Broth" ; little to no Grits! Won't go back!"

  • "I was somewhat apprehensive about this restaurant when I first saw it. The menu was also not one we have usually seen. But, the proof of a good restaurant is not the words on the menu but in the proverbial "pudding". The our meals were great. In fact I would say our meals were outstanding. I would highly recommend this restaurant and would eat there the next time we are on Amelia Island."

  • "We had such high expectations as a first timer. You definitely need reservations a couple of days in advance. We had a seat near the kitchen...ask for a less distracting spot. Our waitress certainly did not have the southern hospitably we were used too. But the food was amazing!!! We would definitely go back all considered."

  • "Talk about GREAT food. You've got to get the pork chops. I know, pork chops you say? Trust us, they are to die for. They even made flounder (not my favorite fish) outstanding. The fried chicken is always killer. My bride and I had a fine bottle of the Prisoner, and one of our children ordered pink lemonade -- even the pink lemonade was WOW (home-squeezed and definitely not prefab). If your on Amelia Island, you gotta go to 29S."

  • "Started with the grilled romain salad which was amazing. Toped with walnuts, bacon, crumbled blue cheese with a honey champagne dressing. Then the small plate special curried scallops on flatbread with cilantro lime vegetables (slivers of red and yellow peppers). The flavors melded together beautifully and I would not have guesses it was a curry dish the flavor was so mild but devine. My 10yo daughter had a green salad that she ate the entire salad and would have licked the bowl clean if I'd let her. Then she had the burger on the main menu made simply plain with fries. The burger for her was on the large side but it was so good she ate the entire thing! Would highly recommend. Our best meal on Amelia Island on a 5 night vacation!"

  • "Read reviews &though most were excellent those that were not made us wonder if we'd have a good one...glad to say we had a delicious meal..interesting combos/seasoning/pairings...scallops,porkchop,green tomatoes all yummy.Our waiter Bo was a great guy.Though we were inside ,the outside area would be good spot for lunch or in nice weather.Would be nice if owners gave the interior a but of ambiance/updating. But food is their business & that speaks for itself. Liked that it was in the wonderful downtown area within walking distance."

I enjoyed the barbecue cobb salad, and it was really an opportunity to taste a lot of the restaurant's specialties. My husband got the porkchops, and the tea made for a very interesting experience. Great food, great service, and a wonderful date night :-)"

  • "We have been dining at 29 South Eats for years and always love the food. We had another great meal there recently, but the service was painfully slow and inattentive. We were constantly looking for our waiter to flag down so we could get bread, water, wine. Ordered a glass of wine and it never did come. Flagged our waiter down when I was almost done with my meal to remind him about the wine. If the service was better, I would have given 4 stars."

  • "Excellent food and service. The seared scallops, served over creamed leeks and potato pancakes, were amazing. Wines by the glass also fairly reasonable and very good. Please note: This place is POPULAR. Reservations are a must -- even on weeknights. We couldn't get a table at 7PM on a Tuesday in mid-March. While dining there (earlier) we saw at least 15 people turned away. Definitely worth booking."

As is our custom, we conversed with our "next table" diners, enjoying a couple that was visiting from England. Bottom line: enjoyable and a thoroughly romantic evening with the spouse. If we were staying longer than one night, we would be back."

  • "Heard that this was a great place for special occasion. I found it to be a "Hole in the wall place" with unfriendly reception. Having a reservation made no difference, was placed in table in door way near the kitchen. People crammed everywhere, no atmosphere other then crowded, noisy, and eclectic. Could not stand the place so we left without eating, they could care less that we left."

  • "We ate at 29 South twice this past week while visiting Fernandina Beach, as we do every year. Our first experience was wonderful. Great service from Bo and delicious food. On our second visit we were entertaining clients and had the worse service imaginable (not Bo).We had the same experiences with this waiter on a previous visit, but mostly just a very poor/superior attitude towards his clientele. This time, however, he took so long to take our orders that two entrees became unavailable and then completely forgot to serve our salads and appetizers.....just arrived with entrees. So the whole mass of food just got dumped on an already cramped table. Embarrassing. We love this restaurant, but just dread this server!!!"

  • "As out of town visitors, we felt we 'lucked out' with 29 South. Had to take an 8:30 reservation spot even though we had hoped for an earlier seating so do plan ahead. We can heartily recommend the fried green tomatoes, shrimp and grits and the grilled swordfish on a huge bed of awesome succotash. Fresh ingredients tastefully prepared!"

  • "Second visit to 29 South was as good as the first. Great food and service and reasonable prices. Enjoyed 4 very good apps and a tasty salad- everything better with their homemade bacon. My wife's pulled pork Cobb salad was excellent as was my pork chop over Mac n cheese. Ambience is casual and wine list is good value. Food is excellent. Planning another visit when we return next year."

  • "First of all, this restaurant smells like a dirty mop. The seating is uncomfortable and their is no ambience at all. I ordered the daily fish special which was a baked grouper. It had no flavor and was cooked for someone on a tasteless diet, and was on a few carrots and it came with with puree with cauliflower. It was one 1/4 inch strip which I thought was a bit of sauce. My husband had the short ribs which were tender, but not hot. I really thought why go here and spend these prices when there are so many great restaurants in this town. I won't return."

Their version of Shrimp and Grits was spectacular and my wife's scallops were perfect. We even tried dessert; just to see if the desserts were as special as the entree. We were not surprised when it surpassed our expectations. We will be back."

  • "Based on a recommendation from a local friend and reviews for 29 South, my wife and I went there for our 35th anniversary dinner. We were not disappointed. The service was excellent. Our waiter, Ian was knowledgeable of each dish and was very helpful in offering suggestions. The fried green tomato appetizer was excellent. I selected the sweet tea marinated pork chop and my wife had the honey fried chicken. Both were excellent. We did not have dessert afterwards but can only imagine they matched the quality of the appetizers and entrees. Definitely a place we will revisit on our next trip to Fernandina Beach."
