Diner Reviews
  • "My wife and I really enjoy our visits to Fernandina Beach and one of the main reasons is the excellent food. 29 South is now on our "must have" meals list when in town. Excellent food, wonderful service and over all great experience. As mentioned in the title this was our second visit to 29 South but we both hope to enjoy eating there many more times. The prices are what we expected and after our first visit we knew enough to make reservations way ahead of time."

  • "everything was fine except….when we arrived we were told our table was outside. it was hot and we did not want to sit in the heat!! people should be told ahead of time their seating is outside!! there were lots of empty table inside!"

  • "We enjoyed 29 South Eats. The owner was friendly and accommodating. The food was well prepared. Service was a bit inconsistent, but not bad. the menu is interesting and the portions are ample. Easy to find, park, and be close to the main street."

  • "Super shrimp and grits. Lovely lobster mac n cheese."

  • "We couldn't get a reservation at the time we preferred and took an earlier one. I felt rushed. I felt like a tourist that was just a "one time check" rather than a local enjoying my favorite restaurant. That was disappointing because we were celebrating my daughter's last night on the island with us before returning back to school. The food was fabulous as always. It just felt more like a chain restaurant experience than a relaxing dinner."

  • "This is a small cafe with a deceivingly large menu. Service is excellent, though the room is a bit dark with the tables necessarily close together. I'd return."

  • "While in the area last year, we chose this restaurant based on the appearance and the herb/vegetable garden on the property. We went back this year because we enjoyed the food so much last year. We have had salads, fish entrees and desserts here. All were extraordinary. I eat in Charleston, SC restaurants regularly and am fairly hard to impress."

  • "This was the super-star of restaurants in this area - the egg rolls were a rock star appetizer but every single thing was wonderful and concluding with donut bread pudding - are you kidding me - besides it took 3 days to get a reservations - so reserve early and often"

  • "My husband and I had eaten lunch at 29 South Eats shortly after it first opened and we were impressed with the creativity of the menu and the care of preparation and flavors of the food. It seems to have evolved into a mediocre place to eat with a predictable menu and prices not reflecting value. We will not return unless something changes to make the restaurant worth going to."

  • "29 South was a great experience! The food was pricey but very good. The staff was very helpful and efficient! Our waiter knew his specials and was very well detailed, so there was no guest work involved. Highly recommend 29 South to anyone coming to Fernandina Beach. It, to us, was well worth dining there and the money spent!"

  • "29 South has always been one of my downtown favorites! My last experience wasn't the greatest as t here were some large loud parties and the room was really warm, but the food and service was excellent!"

  • "South 29 was as remember it. Casual, comfortable but also very good southern style food and good wine and beer selection.mussells were great and the main course selection varied. Great service."

  • "We live in Jacksonville and decided to take a ride up to Fernandina for the day. After reading the reviews of 29 South as well as their menu which has a focus on farm to table we knew this was the place to try. We were not disappointed at all. Food was fresh and delicious, and our server was great as well. We will be back!"

  • "We are local residents and we have many great restaurants to choose from but 29 South is always our favorite. Consistently great food and service. The service is always superb and they are knowledgeable about the menu and any questions that we may have. Fresh and fabulous!"

  • "The pork chop is my favorite dish at this restaurant, served on a bed of creamy Mac and cheese and blackberry preserves! Do not pass it up! Delicious!!"

  • "The food was not good. I had high hopes for this restaurant because of the farm to table concept. Service was snotty and the lobster corndog a joke."

  • "I had the pork bbq eggs benedict. It was a unique mix of dishes on a plate. BBQ pork with a sweet/spicy sauce in the center with eggs benedict framing it on either side. This was the best brunch dish I have had in a long time!"

  • "Our experience at 29 South Eats was underwhelming, this is being kind. The restaurant is located in a very nice historic section, however the resturant itself is rather small, making it loud and cramped. I had the shrimp and grits, which were quite good, my partner had the pork chop, dry as whit leather. Upon tell the hostess that it was indee subpar she replied, "oh I'm sorry" and that was that. No offer of anything other than the, "I'm sorry". The wait staff that we had was nice enough, I wouldn't dare go as far as "friendly" she was dry and to the point. We tried several reaturants while in Amelia Island and Fernandina Beach. I'd suggest picking another one than this and get what you pay for. At $25.00 plus a head, there are far better."

  • "Well first of all overall we liked our food. Husband had hambuger - he loved it. I had bbq salad. Way way way too much sauce and no deviled eggs only boiled eggs. I would get again but put sauce on side. But the fried green tomatoes were some of the best ever. Wine list was frustrating At least 4 of our selections were no longer carried. It was comical. Finally we just said bring us a red! The dessert donut bread pudding is outstanding - a must have. Don't get mac and cheese pretty much velveta cheese and macaroni noodles - nasty. Chef needs a new recipe"

  • "The food is so delicious, fresh (vege's from the garden out back), and the service is perfect. We discovered this place several years ago and it's still one of the best dining experiences to have. If I'm anywhere near it's a definite for dining."

  • "The food at 29 South is very good and very different. We had a difficult time choosing our entrees because they all sounded interesting. We had the Cobb Salad, the Shrimp and Grits, the Fried Chicken, and the Catch of the day. They were all excellent! We can't wait to go back and try the ones we didn't order!"

  • "Our party of 5 thoroughly enjoyed our late night dessert stop at 29 South. We came very close to closing time but the staff (Demetri I believe) welcomed us and took our orders without hesitation. We were transported to a quaint, little place. It felt like we were in SoHo in a little neighborhood spot. The atmosphere was perfect and delightful. All of our desserts were excellent. The Krispy Kreme bread pudding presentation was very cute. I will definitely come back the next time I'm in town. Great experience"

  • "This is a great restaurant in that all of their food is local. They try to be organic; they are close but not totally there."

  • "Returned the mussels. Tile fish entree was excellent; Blue Marlin was dry. Service was very good. Complimentary dessert and cheese plate were given and mussels removed from the bill. Had an excellent T-Vines Grenache that deserved a crystal wine glass"

  • "Really everything we had was delicious, but the polenta, lobster corn dog and the coffe and dough nuts were particularly delicious."

  • "You know it's good! Our server, Bobby, was very knowledgable about both food and wine and guided us in the right direction on both fronts....even a special vegetarian dish made to order from their freshest ingredients!"

  • "Absolutely wonderful meal. Preparation and presentation were beyond expectation. Grilled romaine salad was excellent. Swordfish as the special was perfection. Don't miss this place in your quest to find great food!"
    Dined on 6/15/2014
  • "My husband and I had another memorable meal at 29 South. While the regular menu has something that fits every mood (from grilled romaine and a fancy burger to scallops), we both decided on the special. It was spotted snapper- amazing!"

  • "We made our review through Open table for 6:30 pm on a Sunday evening. We wanted to sit inside since it was 90 degrees and very humid outside. There were multiple tables open inside the restaurant. However, the gentleman who seated us told us that we had to either sit outside or at a table right by the front door. He told us that when we make reservations through Open Table, their reservation system at the restaurant only reserves tables outside. We decided we did not want to sit three feet from the front door so we left. Open Table needs to work with the restaurant to fix this problem."

  • "We had 6 energetic people, great wine and wonderful meals. The "upscale southern food" menu was once again wonderful. I only said very good because I didn't order my usual scallops and wished I had, even though the fish was wonderful. We finished the evening with the "doughnuts and coffee" desert and weren't disappointed. This is my favorite restaurant."

  • "The shrimp and grits were exceptional - the best gluten-free gravy we've had. It was great that the waiter offered to have all the shrimp grilled for the dish to make it GF. My fish taco was wonderfully fresh and tasty - the best I've had. The portions were very satisfying, too."

  • "The food was fair the oysters had no flavor whatsoever and neither did the fish. The bread was somewhat stale. The portions were very small. The prices on the menu were high not worth the money. Would not recommend this restaurant."

  • "The restaurant had a great concept, a farmers table. However, the food did not live to the expectations one would have of a restaurant with so many accolades. The fish tacos were dry. The sopressata appetizer was too fattening and the mozzarella which complimented the sopressata was a fraction of the bruschetta. I think the restaurant needs updates too, such as table cloths on tables outside, as the food falls right on the floor. "

  • "Ate outside. The tables were dirty and it was like the table was on a rocking chair. Ordered the cheese and salami plate- three very small scraps of delicious cheese and one slice of salami. Pork chop was good but the balance of the event took away from the dining experience. Needed more server and kitchen help, along with someone to clean the tables and floor - and, it would be a good idea to hide the rodent traps- my wife kicked one under her feet during desert - what a way to finish a meal!"

  • "Nice place. Good, almost great, food. Could use a cleaning and a lightbulb or two. You won't find much better on the island. "
    Dined on 5/23/2014
  • "My wife and I like to try and find the restaurants the "foodies" frequent because they are usually the most unique and serve an amazing array of food selection. 29 South did not disappoint. The farm to table freshness was apparent, the service was excellent and the food was unforgettable."
    Dined on 5/19/2014
  • "While the service was great, the outside seating very nice in the late spring, the food just wasn’t quite in line with other reviews. Not sure if it was a matter of the kitchen being busy but everything tasted a bit over seasoned but not in a way to compliment the dish. Ordered the Lobster Spring Rolls – this could be so much better but was rubbery. Pulled Pork Spring Rolls were just mixing something to elevate them above being greasy and lacking flavor. So close, just need to add some more finesse. And need to clean outside - rather scruffy."
