A word from 23Hoyt
The restaurant scene in Portland is among the most vibrant and interesting in the country. In 2006 Executive Chef Chris Carriker was promoted into a rigorous sous chef gig under Executive Chef Christopher Israel – at 23Hoyt, just as we opened. More recently he earned high regard and notoriety while Executive Chef at the Gilt Club. 23Hoyt's crave-able menu (with the best burger in town) still fits within the realm of "gastro-pub" with familiar offerings that exceed expectations on your first bite.
The comfortable cafe, bar and dining room features several seating areas including extensive outdoor cafe tables on bustling NW 23rd Avenue, in Nob Hill, the best boutique shopping neighborhood in the city.

Diner Reviews
  • "Food is great. I've done brunch and dinner here so far. I will return in the future. Very good American style food. The host on our first visit recommended the Old Fashion whiskey drink with cognac instead of whiskey and I'm afraid he's now turned me into a snob. I may never go back to whiskey in my Old Fashions. Amazing! :o)"

  • "We arrived at 23 Hoyt on a Saturday night at about 9:05. It was not very busy. We sat down and waited about 10 minutes to order our drinks. Then we waited another 20+ minutes and decided to leave after we did not receive are drinks. It was after 9:40 when we walked out the door. We have eaten at 23 Hoyt before and enjoyed. But this time was really not good."

  • "23 Hoyt under the chef expertise of Chef Carriker has enough variety and character to set it above other places. The balance of flavors in the food and creativity is just delightful. Well done. Portion sizes were more than fine. Service by Allegra was also notable. A wonderful find for anyone that enjoys a swish of fine dining without the price."

  • "23Hoyt is a great example of Pacific Northwest cuisine. We loved the integration of vegetables with our entrees and the veloute with the halibut was sublime, though the fish was slightly overdone on the side that was seared. The rest was perfectly cooked. The doughnut holes were heavenly and the panna cotta was very tasty."

  • "Enjoyed our salads, big proportions. We split the brick chicken which was excellent! Donut holes with caramel sauce, a delight. Noise inside too much, thank goodness the weather was good to sit outside."

  • "I got to pick the restaurant for my birthday dinner and fortunately chose 23Hoyt. I had been there several times before for happy hour but never for a full dinner. On a warm summer night, sitting outside was just the ticket. It was a wonderful evening all around."

  • "Started with the cheese plater and bison tartare, both were excellent. Main dishes included roasted chicken and Halibut for my wife and I. Oredered a bottle of the house red as well, which went well. Desert included warm doughnut holes with salted caramel sauce; very good. We'll be back again."

  • "We have eaten here numerous times and always found the food and service to be great. This time the food was not as good and it took a long time once we ordered until we got our food. It was a night they were not too busy. We will try it again, hopefully it was just an off night."

  • "Best Caesar salad in the city - great garlic-heavy dressing. The halibut was cooked perfectly. Lovely dinner all around."

  • "We are carnivores, but this evening ate vegetarian dishes to die for - rich with flavor, texture, spice. Didn't miss the meat, although there were plenty of tempting meats on the menu. Great service and good draft list too. Highly recommend."

  • "With the dining room nearly empty we waited about 15 minutes for water and ordering and another 30 minutes to be served. Learned later that a staff person had quit that day throwing things askew. Companions' dinners were excellent. Did not finish my trout which was over-salted."

  • "While my halibut was well cooked and flavorful the rest of our party was underwhelmed. The risotto was poorly presented and the hamburger was overcooked. All felt the portions small and prices high and little attention was given to small things that make dining memorable. No bread was provided and service seemed indifferent. In all, we would not return. There are many superior options out there."

  • "Nice place. Ambiance was great. Father's Day was a specific menu + buffet that my party wasn't fond of."

  • "We had incredible appetizers and salads, and then the main entrees fell through. We were eating family style and sharing everything: Snap Pea salad was outstanding, Quinoua salad was great... Bugatoni was over salted. We then ordered the 'must have' hamburger and it was dull, came without the egg, and by the time the egg got there, burger was cold. Donut holes with the salted caramel sauce was out of this world!... and made us forget that some of the entrees were weak. We will try 23 Hoyt again.... they seem to be making a come back, but don't have all the kinks worked out yet! Jill was great, Eli is incredible manager."

  • "Food was excellent. Great location! Moderately priced. Loved being able to sit outside and watch the people. Staff were very friendly and helpful."

  • "It had potential but the portions were too small and the bison tartar came with three crackers. We were charged for extra crackers. Really? The burger and fries continues to be my favorite on the menu."

  • "I think the regular menu is fabulous and they should stick to that. The brunch food was of good taste but may not have been worth the price. We always love the service and we will be back."

  • "If you go there, you should ask for waitress Allegra. Never had anyone so friendly and so willing to make it a positive experience before."

  • "Roast chicken was dry. Limited selections on the menu. Service was poor. This is the first time we have been disappointed in the food selection, food quality and service at this restaurant."

  • "23 Hoyt was amazing. I was looking for a really nice place to take my girlfriend. Somewhere to show her how special she is. 23 Hoyt has a hip cool ambiance, fantastic ambient music, and the food... unbeatable. The best food I've had at any restaurant. You can't beat 24 Hoyt."

  • "The music was too loud for a Sunday Brunch, especially when you are bringing multiple generations. But the donut holes and salted caramel were a big hit. My steak was Rare, not Medium Rare, and served without a steak knife, which I had to ask my server for. "

  • "I think we must have had a bad experience several months ago--I believe we were put off by service. Whatever--We avoided 23 Hoyt. On a whim--Decided to give another try--reservation with open table was there and servers were friendly yet efficient. Food was great. Great local salad. Loved the atmosphere and space--lighting/decor. All felt great and food was perfect. Will return. "

  • "Gourmet Cuisine in a very relaxing and friendly atmosphere under fabulous service. The bar is also outstanding. It is definitely one of the best dinner experience you may have in Portland."

  • "In this age more people want food to take into account dietary issues. 23Hoyt has several good GF options!"

  • "While my table mate was satisfied with her entree on the Portland monthly deal, the appetizer and salad were nothing to write home about. My ceasar salad was tolerable but not worth $10, the goat, one of their specialties was expensive, tough for about half the meat. Service while attentive, delivered the appetizer and my salad before our drinks arrived. it might be trendy but not among the better restaurants in this town of excellent local spots."

  • "Now this is a resturant that my wife and I both enjoyed. The decor is fantastic and the natural wood displayed throughout the establishment is swell. The food choices were unique and the server was knowledgable about all items on the menu and area encompassing the location! Whenever we return to Portland, this will be our first stop... Again."

  • "Trying to add taste to food with chili flakes, i. e. making it taste hot, is not creative. It's a false and unpalatable substitute. The addition of chili flakes to the salad destroyed an otherwise average salad and rendered it inedible. Why on earth ruin a good thing with unnecessary hot stuff. As for appetizer of beans on toast touted as bruschetta, I have had as good at Taco Bell from its 99 cent menu. Finally, although the rigatoni was good, it was nothing special. The duck and desert were good and rate only a "B", because they are overpriced for what they are. Given the prices, there are other restaurants that are far better in PDX."

  • "I am allergic to so many things, dining out is something I'm rarely brave enough to do. Our server was totally cool, did not flinch in the slightest when I told him I needed serious modifications to the dishes on the menu. He was discreet, and said the chef would put something together for me, which he did. The dish was perfectly tailored to what I can eat and incredibly delicious. It was truly refreshing to not be made to feel like a freak and to have a restaurant accommodate a special diet without any problems."

  • "The food was great! The service was very friendly. Loved the atmosphere. We were in Portland on business. We found the restaurant through open table. We were not disappointed. I will return on a future visit to Portland!"

  • "In the past, family enjoyed this place. This time it was loud, uncomfortable, marginal service and average food. Difficult to even get timely drinks or silverware for one in group. Reservation highlighted that it was an important birthday celebration.....no acknowledgment by staff. Terrible!"

  • "A friend and I recently had dinner during Portland's Dining Month. This meant we had a limited menu (2 options percourse), but that didn't detract from the experience. Both of us agreed our winter vegetable turnover was truly excellent--and we loved the cheese sauce. The only problem was that it was large, and so good that we ate the entire thing, which meant we had little room by the time the entree came, but we managed. My tomato soup was a little over spiced, IMO, but still good. The sprinkle of cheese was a nice added touch. And my duck, marinated pears and kale were really excellent. Thankfully the restaurant provided doggie boxes so we could take home what we couldn't eat. Service was good, though a bit slow."

  • "Online munu looked awesome. Elk tartare, hamachi crudo, etc. Neither of those items were actually on the menu when we got there, but we went for the regular steak tartare, steelhead crudo, and a few other things that were not memorable. I love tartare and pretty much anything raw, but it didn't look or taste good. The cuts of the steelhead were thick, bland, and chewy. It would have been better with a much thinner cut and some acid or flavor. The service was very slow. Took 15 minutes to get our first drink. The waitress did not ask any questions or check on us between courses. The ambience is awesome though. Indoor trees, high ceilings, nice decor. Too bad they don't focus more on the food and service. I won't go back."

  • "Completely unremarkable dining experience. Food was composed of quality ingredients yet lacked flavor. Service was efficient but not hospitable. Seemed to be just going through the motions."
    Dined on 3/9/2014
  • "Entrées were great as well as the appetizers however the deserts left much to be desired even had to return one. That being said I would recommend dropping in on this place when you are next on 23rd good food with a crisp atmosphere."

  • "My friends and I had a great time at 23Hoyt. We enjoyed the food and the service. We loved sitting on the second floor and looking out at the lighted trees. Loved the music playing in the background."

  • "I tried the March fixed menu. The salad was too spicy and salty. The food was not very good. The service was slow. I won't be back."

  • "We decided to take advantage of the PDX Dining Month special. The server was friendly but forgot to ask us about our food. They fullfilled our special request for a private area and the restaurant is modern. Parking was easy. The Oxtail Croquettes were okay and the braised duck legs were VERY good! The butter leaf salad had too much dressing and it was extremely soggy, the tomatoes soup tasted like a canned one and the wild mushroom lasangna was AWFUL. We spent $80.00 and left the place hungry. On top of that, our friendly server had forgotten to put deodorant that day. He smelled. When he first reached out to get our plates, I gagged. I truly lost my apetite. It was like if we could taste his armpits! Gross! We are never going back!"
