A word from 23Hoyt
The restaurant scene in Portland is among the most vibrant and interesting in the country. In 2006 Executive Chef Chris Carriker was promoted into a rigorous sous chef gig under Executive Chef Christopher Israel – at 23Hoyt, just as we opened. More recently he earned high regard and notoriety while Executive Chef at the Gilt Club. 23Hoyt's crave-able menu (with the best burger in town) still fits within the realm of "gastro-pub" with familiar offerings that exceed expectations on your first bite.
The comfortable cafe, bar and dining room features several seating areas including extensive outdoor cafe tables on bustling NW 23rd Avenue, in Nob Hill, the best boutique shopping neighborhood in the city.

We enjoyed a nice dinner. The heat was up too high, so it was a little uncomfortable. The cheese plate was a little skimpy, but high quality. The cocktails were outstanding, entrees were amazing. Service was good.

We've been here a couple of times, and wanted somewhere to go on a Saturday night to have a nice dinner, and were able to get reservations here just a couple of hours in advance. The menus are made daily, so you always get a nice variance between what you might see from visit to visit. Both entrees that we had were great - a roasted chicken breast (bone-in) on a bed of gnocchi, and a beautiful piece of cod with red potatoes and sunchokes. The best part though may have the donut holes with the salted caramel dipping sauce. Would definitely recommend to anyone looking for a nice, quiet meal with great service. Almost forgot, the cocktails were great as well...a lot revolved around Gin which is a bonus for me!

This is a really nice restaurant with a comfortable, relaxed vibe. There were people dressed up; there were people dressed down and everyone seemed to be having a great time. We had well made cocktails, a tempura squash appetizer which was perfectly cooked; the outside nice and crispy while the squash inside was firm and not at all mushy. I ordered the black cod and my husband had salmon. The salmon was excellent but the cod was superior; so moist it almost melted in your mouth. We had an excellent server who was very pleasant and attentive and had excellent recommendations for both the wine and the food. It was a bit on the spendy side but for the food and service we felt it was well worth it.

I had a reservation for 5 last Tuesday night. The service was very poor the whole time, and when food arrived one of the Salmon orders was much more saltier than the other two. We waited for our server or someone to go by but by the time she came around the rest of the group had finished their meals!!! She had no interest to make it better and when we were about to pay she made it sound like she had more important things to take care of rather than helping us! This was a first bad experience at 23 Hoyt as I have eaten there before but only for parties of 2!

I love the Alphabet dist. and this is one of the reasons, This restaurant is a culinary gem. The food is exceptional and very imaginative. We had smoked mackerel, and and a most intriguing smoked salmon marinated in beet juice, colorful, flavorful and yummy, and a pacific grilled salmon, scrumptious prepared rare as it should be. We enjoyed all this food with a Turley Juvenile Calif. Zinfandel. We dined outside, the inside is very well laid out and spectacular to look at. We had excellent service. I highly recommend this establishment.

I'll confess, the lure is the 2.00 mimosas but the donuts with salted caramel sauce will keep you coming back for more. The omelets are excellent- the pit ham is delish. The only down side to brunch is the potatoes. I think 23Hoyt can do better than these hard, bland cubes of refried spud. Let's do some garlic, some onion, and some seasonings!

Our table was ready upon our arrival. We started with a couple drinks, both arrived promptly, house red was nice and the spring vodka drink was delicious. We started with a tomato salad, which was flavorful and quite unique in it's variety of tomatoes. We shared plates, sturgeon and flatiron steak- both were quite delicious with the sturgeon being firm and flavorful and the steak was tasty and soft in consistency- nice. Finished with pear tart for dessert that was quite good, though perhaps more ice cream or a creme fraiche would set it up better. I liked the restaurant atmosphere and food very much, though my date was a little less enthusiastic.

This restaurant wants to be a trendy, foodie Northwest 23rd spot but for the price it charges, it doesn't make it. Nothing is really bad about this place but our server, who was quite pleasant didn't know some basic stuff about the menu such as where the oysters come from or what one of the dessert items was. I ordered the grilled steak rare and it came out medium. Everything else was good, just not very good.

Food is great. I've done brunch and dinner here so far. I will return in the future. Very good American style food. The host on our first visit recommended the Old Fashion whiskey drink with cognac instead of whiskey and I'm afraid he's now turned me into a snob. I may never go back to whiskey in my Old Fashions. We arrived at 23 Hoyt on a Saturday night at about 9:05. It was not very busy. We sat down and waited about 10 minutes to order our drinks. Then we waited another 20+ minutes and decided to leave after we did not receive are drinks. It was after 9:40 when we walked out the door. We have eaten at 23 Hoyt before and enjoyed. But this time was really not good.

23 Hoyt under the chef expertise of Chef Carriker has enough variety and character to set it above other places. The balance of flavors in the food and creativity is just delightful. Well done. 23Hoyt is a great example of Pacific Northwest cuisine. We loved the integration of vegetables with our entrees and the veloute with the halibut was sublime, though the fish was slightly overdone on the side that was seared. The rest was perfectly cooked. The doughnut holes were heavenly and the panna cotta was very tasty.

While my halibut was well cooked and flavorful the rest of our party was underwhelmed. The risotto was poorly presented and the hamburger was overcooked. All felt the portions small and prices high and little attention was given to small things that make dining memorable. No bread was provided and service seemed indifferent. In all, we would not return. There are many superior options out there.

We had incredible appetizers and salads, and then the main entrees fell through. We were eating family style and sharing everything: Snap Pea salad was outstanding, Quinoua salad was great... Bugatoni was over salted. We then ordered the 'must have' hamburger and it was dull, came without the egg, and by the time the egg got there, burger was cold. Donut holes with the salted caramel sauce was out of this world!... and made us forget that some of the entrees were weak. We will try 23 Hoyt again.... they seem to be making a come back, but don't have all the kinks worked out yet! Jill was great, Eli is incredible manager.
