A word from 230 Forest Avenue
Don't be fooled by the crowds and the noise; they are all part of the scene here at Laguna Beach's sexy and intense 230 Forest Avenue. The lean deep room seduces you to the open kitchen, bustling bar, and concrete floors, creating a space that is part modern bistro, part martini bar, and part art gallery. It's the perfect spot to see and be seen, laid back Laguna-style. Executive Chef Marc Cohen is consistently recognized as one of The OC's top chefs. You'll be ready to award him a medal, too, after tasting his flashy-to-the-eye, tickle-the-taste buds fusion appetizers and entrees. His dishes are often so stunning that they compete with the artwork on the walls, making for a thoroughly satisfying "artistic" experience.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "Consistently been a great place for lunch or dinner in the heart of Laguna Beach!"

  • "Maybe some more vegetarian options other than salads would be nice. "

  • "230 Forest is one of my favorite restaurants! It has a comfortable design and an always interesting menu. The service is good - really good. The wine list has something for everyone. This time we had lunch and ordered the crispy tacos, the halibut chowder soup, the prime rib French dip sandwich and a half carafe of their rose. Everything was really good and beautifully presented. I am always recommending this restaurant to friends and people looking for a good recommendation for a Laguna Beach restaurant. I wish they would open a location in Palm Desert or La Quinta!"

  • "From the appetizers to the desserts, we found everything exceptional. Our main entrees were the Ahi, halibut, filet wellington and the Scampi. For dessert we shared the chocolate soufflé and the cheesecake. The only negative was the crowded noisy atmosphere. However, the quality of the food and attentive service made up for this. Anyway, you can enjoy your conversation while walking off your meal near Main Beach."

  • "230 Forest has a lot of competition downtown Laguna Bch, but they hold their own. Though busy, the waiters are attentive and personable. It's a small space and pretty jammed most evenings. The menu is yummy, had the Indiri Chicken Pot Pie with perfectly crispy vegetables and very tender chicken, but they should vary it more, I've been there four times this year and I'm running out of things to try."

  • "If you want to experience great dining in the heart of Laguna Beach enjoying everything Laguna has to offer this is the place for you. Pre-dinner martini's were made to perfection followed by fresh Calimari "Rhode Island" style with sweet peppers and Cracklin' Shrimp appetizers enjoyed by all. Our server recommended the Chef's special for the evening, the Alaskan Halibat over risotto topped with fresh garden salad mix, it was so good we suggested it be placed on the menu. Others in our party ordered the Chilean Sea Bass and Day Boat Scallops which were delicious and never dissappoint. Service was polite, professional and timely...this was a great dining experience!"

  • "LOVE, LOVE, LOVE 230 Forest!! Have been coming back for years every time we visit the Laguna area!!"

  • "Our table was ready for us when we arrived for lunch so we were seated immediately as we had a reservation. The energy of the restaurant is good, but the tables are so close together and the noise level too high to converse easily. The food was tasty--nothing special and the service was okay but the server seemed indifferent to us. I wouldn't recommend this restaurant as there as so many good restaurants in Laguna Beach, but if you were to go there, I would ask for a patio table and perhaps go for dinner."

  • "The food was wonderful. Both of our entrees were creative and fresh. The barramundi was cooked perfectly and the risotto only made it more tasty but alas it was vey crowded and noisy with tables so close together that we couldn't even relax in our chairs. We were so packed in and the room so noisy that any hope of conversation was impossible."

  • "Great food!! always packed so make reservations unless you want dinner at 9:00 p.m. Could use a little more room (you're packed together pretty tight) but great service and friendly staff. Took a nice bottle of wine with us (usually we enjoy wine off the wine list, but had a great Pinot we were ready to open). Very reasonable cork fee ( $15.00) so well worth carrying a bottle with you. Enjoy."

  • "Everything was going great until I started chewing on a small blue rubberband. It was at the very end of my meal tucked away in sole stuffed with crab. Management response was to offer me one free dessert, that they chose. i'm not a big dessert fan so I declined. I felt this poor response. otherwise the food was good."

  • "We dine here EVERY TIME we are in Laguna, sometimes more than once. The food is fantastic! I recommend the Crusted Halibut, you will not be disappointed. Servers are all great and are very informed of their menu. Management always attends to our needs and requests. This is a "must eat there" establishment while in or near Laguna beach."

  • "While vacationing in Laguna Beach we chose to have a few nice meals. We are a family of four, with two boys ages 12 and 8 who are both accustomed to eating in nice fine dining establishments. However, from the moment we were seated we felt judged by our waiter who chose to spend far less time with with us than the other tables. We had ordered two appetizers that never reached our table, only with an acknowledgment of he had forgotten to place them, without apology. Similarly, my wife and I each ordered a second glass of wine, with only hers making the table. This said, the food was good - my wife had scallops, my oldest son and I each had seafood far diavalo, and my youngest a salad and calamari. No complaints, all quite tasty."

  • "We always have a good meal at 230. We both had the Blacked Ahi, which was delicious . Many times the restaurant is very noisy, but we went midweek and had a very enjoyable birthday dinner for my husband. We recommend the restaurant."

  • "I had some of the best shrimp here! The cracklin shrimp was amazing and super flavorful. There was a Thai chili sauce with rice noodles and shredded veggies underneath. I love that the veggies weren't an afterthought. I also had a great mixed greens salad and a crisp glass of Chardonnay. The atmosphere was great and although the place is a bit tight, the food and service more than makes up for it. It's a great place to people watch too!"

  • "Great food, pretty setting, awesome service. It is lovely to sit outside under the heaters. It is in the heart of the Laguna Village. A really nice menu. My only issue is it's hard to make changes to the menu to accommodate allergies. Lots to choose from though. It's always a wonderful dining experience!"

  • "230 Forest Avenue has a great menu and all the food was fantastic. There were so many great choices that it was difficult to decide. The wagyu beef carpaccio was so delicious, as were the other salad and appetizers that we tried. I had the New York Steak for my entree and it exceeded expectations- it was tender, buttery, and cooked perfectly. The sauce was perfect. The other couple in my party ordered desserts and they were very pleased with those as well. The only flaw was the service- it was slow and inattentive. We felt like we were a nuisance. Hopefully it was just a bad night, because the food was so good that we will definitely return to this restaurant and are looking forward to trying the others in the chef Marc Cohen family."

  • "Wonderful food done presented and composed in an atypical manner. The combination of ingredients and flavors makes each dish greater than the sum of its parts. They enhance the other elements of the dish while helping to mitigate any of its excess flavor. They allow the various ingredients to stand on their own while seeing how one ingredient/element tones down or enhances or compliments another ingredient. It is when you get all of the flavors together that you get the best of the dish. Wonderful place to go for those who enjoy good culinary craftsmanship."

  • "Just moved to Laguna and have been to 230 Forest several times. Everything has always been great. I love the warm bread with flavored butter they serve. The Burrata Mozzarella was amazing. The salads are also very good. We had the Kale salad with marcona almonds and dried cranberries as well as the 230 Caesar both great! I love fish and I have not been disappointed with everything I have ordered. The Day Boat Scallops with butternut squash risotto were fantastic. The Mahi-Mahi and Halibut where both top notch as well. Its a fun vibrant atmosphere and I will be back several more times."

  • "This is one of our favorite places to dine in Laguna Beach!"

  • "The spacing of the restaurant floor is vary limited making it so that the tables are very close together. This combined with the conversation of the people there makes the ambiance of the restaurant intimate in a sense that you have to get close to talk to each other because it is loud in there. The food was delicious, however portions are small and it is pricey. Overall a good experience. Don't know if I would go again however."

  • "Awesome food and awesome service. I ordered the crusted halibut and it was amazing and I'm not much of a fish person. Definately going to make the drive back down to eat here. Ordered a bottle of wine and our waiter was on top of it, never a empty glass. Perfect night."

  • "My wife's fish was incredible, my steak was delicious, however, there was grizzle running thru half of it, so I shared the grizzle half with our puppy, who had no complaints! I have a severe hearing impairment, and my real issue with this restaurant is the horrible noise level. I could not hear my wife and we were sitting at first at a table for two in the main dining area and then a table for two on the patio, which was ever so slightly better. Therefore, I cannot recommend this restaurant to anyone with a hearing impairment. Please note, in all fairness, most hearing impaired people have problems with noise in most restaurants, it's simply a matter of how much noise!!!"

  • "Overall a very good experience, would have enjoyed an indoor table, but with patio heaters, not too bad. I had the Mahi Mahi, wife had the Cioppino - enjoyed them very much. I am a huge fan of mango used in dishes, and I was not disappointed, the Cioppino had a nice spice, they did not skimp on the fish and shellfish. We also shared the Oyster appetizer, very unique and enjoyable."

  • "Seabass was incredible and warm arugula salad the bomb. Conversation with guests was problematic. Bad acoustics and dry loud. Table packed so close together it felt like a communal dinner."

  • "It's a little too crowded--the woman next to me practically had her coat in my lap. The food is always very good and the service very attentive. It's a popular eating venue which I think adds to the congestion. It would be nicer if it were a little more spacious."

  • "By far the best dinner of our six night vacation~and we had many incredible meals! We shared the seafood cioppino and it was the best ever...even better than my special home made version. The drinks were exceptional (I had my favorite, a wonderful Manhattan) and the service friendly and very helpful. Only wish we lived closer to enjoy another great meal at 230!"

  • "Had a great lunch on the patio. My sisters ordered the fish tacos and I ordered the prime rib sandwich. They loved the tacos and the prime rib sandwich was wonderful…..a little hard to eat but well worth it. I would order again."

  • "Want a better filet than Morton's or a better seafood than Scott's? 230 is one on my favorite restaurants in all of Orange County! My wife and I love this restaurant as the food, wine and service has always been top notch, and we hope it stays that way. Their Chefs know what they are doing and do it well. I have never had a bad meal here and if you don't go here, it is your loss."
