Diner Reviews
  • "Service very poor. Had a business group and they do not want to go back due to poor and slow service from staff."

  • "We were seated by the window and had a great view of King street. The ambience and mood were great. I had the chicken and waffles. I loved the lightness of the batter on the chicken and thaw waffles were light. I would go back to this restaurant again."

  • "I reserved a table at the last minute for a group of visitors from Europe. Everything went marvelously, from explanations of Cajun food to the visitors to the wine list. I couldn't have asked for a better and more impressive event. Our wait staff was superb. Thank you 219."

  • "Good food, nice ambience...waiter was a bit quirky, almost rude...took a friend of mine and her daughter for brunch. Overall pleasant but the older waiter (late 30s or early 40s) needs an attitude adjustment."

  • "Our server was rude and not accommodating. The restaurant was aware that we would be a group of about a dozen or so people. They boasted that they were good for groups. Service was slow, there was no one to help the waiter serve our table and he clearly could not handle a group at all. Service was slow, it took 40 minutes to get dessert (none of which had to be prepared--it was cheesecake)."

  • "My family and friends dined here for a birthday celebration. The ambiance and space was perfect. We are were seated comfortably in a room that even though we shared it with another large party, it worked out well. Tui', our server, was very attentive, accommodating, and personable. The evening was going well....until the food was served. It may have been the chef for the evening but there was WAY TO MUCH salt in the food and our fried chicken for the chicken and waffles was under cooked. I am hoping that it was just a bad night and someone didn't taste the food because the restaurant is a very pleasant place to visit."

  • "Reservation? What reservation? They had my name written down, correct number of people, but no tables. The host actually seemed annoyed that we showed up for our reservation. After waiting fifteen - twenty minutes with no apology, they finally seated us. Our waiter, was efficient, but also seemed inconvenienced that we were there. The food was good, but given that we felt uninvited, it sort of ruined the experience. I will say I was there once before and the food and service were great. I guess it was just an off night. Too bad."

  • "The food was amazing! However the staff was a little dry and not very helpful. Maybe it was because there was a snow storm the day before but I believe the staff makes the experience just as much as the food and they fell a little short in that department. But the fact that I'm still commenting about the food speaks volumes! Everything was delicious! I think I'll give it another try just to make sure it wasn't an off day."

  • "Food alittle to pricey for the quality . Overall good eperience"

  • "The prefix menu was too pricey for what was served it was a 3 course meal however overpriced. The restaurant shares space with a bar underneath and another dance venue overhead the cigarette/cigar smell ruined the ambiance and the noise and stomping overhead was ridiculous. The bathroom was very outdated and awful."

  • "If you have a unique group of friends this spot is great for satisfying several night out tastes. The restaurant satisfies the foodie, the bar takes care of the spot to hang socialize and meet new people, the live jazz lounge is great for the musician of all levels and the cigar lounge relaxing."

  • "Extremely quiet with very mediocre food. I hate to say it, but you'd be better off going to an Outback Steakhouse or some other chain."

  • "I was nervous at first because the menu was fixed course for V-day. However, we were pleasantly surprised by the options once we arrived. It was difficult to choose because all of the plates sounded fantastic. I ended up with the chac. board, short braised ribs and truffles for dessert. My husband had a crab and goat cheese starter, steak and truffles as well. Perfect all-around. Most notable for me was the pate, in-house cured duck, and the braised ribs."

  • "Outstanding food with starters like the she-crab soup, oysters, blue crab with prices starting about $9. Main menu starts in low $20's and our duck, red snapper and a butternut like raveloi were all excellent. Children's menu was all homemade and large servings. Wine list starts about $40, but nice selection. Service was excellent with bringing children's plates quickly. It is an old house converted for dining and main dining room is charming. Outdoor seating available. $$$"

  • "The restaurant was good, but only offered a "specials menu" for the evening- excluding the regular dinner menu. That was the biggest disappointment for the night. The food they did offer was very good though..just not what we had expected."

  • "They took us earlier than our 8 pm reservation but ended up waiting 30 MINUTES before a server even noticed us and there were only 3 other tables with guests. The food was great and they gave us a free dessert for their error. I believe though we should have left after waiting 25 minutes, that has never happened to me at a nearly empty restaurant. Only two stars this time although I have been to 219 many times and it usually is better. Hope no one has to wait 30 minutes to be noticed ever again."

  • "Our food was late. Entrée was brought after a long wait but the appetizer was not served to us yet. Waiter was not aware of the mistake till we told him that we had not had our appetizer yet then he took our entrée back to the kitchen, brought the appetizer to us then waited for a long time before bringing our entrée back. The people at the next table were served deserts twice! They had to confess that they had already had their desert and were waiting for their bill!! This was our second visit to the restaurant. The first time was great and the guests that came with us were impressed but this time around, we were not too happy!!!"

  • "I had the pleasure of dining here on Valentine's Day with my fiancée. The room had a chandelier as well as fireplace which made for a very pleasing ambience. Our server, Himash (spelling?), was absolutely wonderful. He was in no way intrusive and offered very good suggestions, as I am not well acquainted with the types of items on the menu and definitely needed assistance. My only regret was not being able to finish the cheesecake I had for dessert because I was so full. We will absolutely be returning!"

  • "We like this restaurant very much. It's the perfect location to meet friends for dinner. The atmosphere is just right for catching up while enjoying good service and tasty food. The menu is nicely varied and includes New Orleans Style dishes. This evening, we were seated next to the fireplace which was perfect for this cold winter night. I am crazy about oysters and have to try fried oysters everywhere we dine. These were lightly breaded and fried to light gold. Very nice. The steaks were perfectly prepared and flavorful. We'll always be happy to return."
    Dined on 2/8/2014
  • "Very limited menu. Suggest more starters and a better varirety. Main Menui also was too limiting . Suggest broader streach of items. Also, the portions were rather small. Suggest adding sides. Desert selections were few and very uninspiring."

  • "But, yikes, watch out for the nil-lingual wait staff! We asked for a basket of bread (which normally automatically comes with your meal) and the guy said "no." Basically, he didn't understand a word we said! Employees with so little English should not be serving tables. This is always a good restaurant for egg dishes - the best eggs benedict anywhere!"

  • "We had friends in town and wanted to go to a restaurant in Alexandria for brunch. We had been to 219 for dinner before, but the brunch was so nice that we will come back again from brunch."

  • "An excellent and reasonable brunch menu. Great omelettes to choose from. I was craving the fried chicken and waffles with collard greens, but exercised some uncharacteristic restraint and went for the crawfish omelette. My friend went with the crab & brie omelette and we split an order of fried oysters. That and a couple bloody mary's left no room for dessert (we were eyeing the bananas foster, but deferred. Maybe next time."

  • "We picked this restaurant because it was creol cuisine, but the menu did not reflect the online one and was extremely limited when we got there. They were out of the mainstay items like grits to go with their shrimp and grits. Both my husband and my food was lukewarm and extremely bland and undercooked. Thank God for the romantic ambiance! That was the only thing that saved this experience."

  • "We met another couple there during Restaurant Week because none of us had ever gone. Nice selection of seasonally available food. The portions were a nice size, not too big. We had the arugula salad with goat cheese, wild boar and smashed potatoe and the mahi mahi followed by creme brulee and bread pudding. A nice atmosphere for adult dining especially date night or meeting friends/family. We'd go back again for a special occassion."

  • "I was really looking forward to taking my wife to this restaurant for her birthday. The website looked great, the menu has several items that made my mouth water but upon arrival we were disappointed to find out that the majority of the menu did not exist anymore. The entire list of side was no longer available. We were told the dessert options then after ordering were told they were out. Our reservation was at 6:30 how are you our of desserts. The service was very basic. I received better service at TGI fridays."

  • "Went on Sunday with friends and kids. Very quiet at 10 am. Slightly smoky smell from the night before but not too bad. Delicious coffee. Omelet, waffle, and French toast were all fantastic. They were out of begniets!?! Very disappointing, but the restaurant was otherwise a wonderful choice."

  • "219 Restaurant overall was a very good dining experience. I booked with Open Table. Wait staff was superior. Friendly, helpful and attentive. Noise level was a bit high with loud diners at an adjacent table and the DJ room below us rattled our table with noise. Also, the place had a live band after 9 pm upstairs, which was nice, except it doubles as a stinky cigar bar. Food was pretty good but I thought kind of expensive. Dinner with wine cost me $160 with a 20% tip. Upstairs there is a $5.00 cover charge for a small bar area to sit and listen to music, but honestly, it is hard to recommend due to poor ventilation of the cigar bar (if you are not into that). Overall, I would still give 219 a 4 out of 5."

  • "New Year's Eve dinner. First course and dessert not too good. Lobster risotto pretty tasty; wild boar very good. The automatic 20% tip (for four people) was not mentioned in the information about the dinner; and was especially off-putting considering they had an order wrong. Redeemed only by a quick turn on replacing the missed order, but still ... Wines were reasonably priced, looked like only a 100% mark-up, and a good selection."

  • "The services was incredibly outstanding!!!! The boar was not able to be eaten....we could not chew it because it was so tough or just not a good piece of meat. The steak was ok and the fish was ok but not fantasatic. We enjoyed the wine and the professional service iof our server in helping us to make our selections. I love the decor, colors, fireplace, place settings, et. Yes, I would come back.."

  • "The staff was very friendly -- a bit hovering (trying to take away dishes before we had finished them) -- but pleasant. We had a table near the fireplace and the atmosphere was very romantic. Unfortunately, the meal was awful. Nothing was well-executed. Every course was badly prepped, badly cooked, and appeared to have been plated hours before and re-warmed. Dessert was a chocolate mousse that looked and tasted suspiciously like that which is sold at Harris Teeter. The meal was expensive and, although the staff was attentive and the setting pretty, the food was so bad I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone. It is a small dining room and it would not take much effort to make the food better while still remaining profitable."

  • "The food was excellent. However, the service was indifferent, if I'm trying to be polite, and, if I'm being blunt, the service was rude. It has been a very long time since I was made to feel this unwelcome at a restaurant. Plates were cleared as soon as one member of my party put his fork down. Staff were setting up and cleaning and polishing silverware in the dining room. Many menu items were unavailable that evening, including their gumbo of the day, most of the kids menu, and every single dessert save one. When I complained about the fact that no dessert save creme brûlée was available, I was informed that there was recent turmoil and turnover in the kitchen. In fact, it seemed like the whole staff was bordering on a mutiny. Avoid."
