Diner Reviews
  • "We were very disappointed that when a restaurant such as this involves itself in restaurant week that there is not one item on the restaurant week menu that allows one to enjoy what the restaurant is known for, steak!"

  • "Visited for restaurant week lunch menu - ordered the grilled calamari, beef carpaccio, lamb shank, vanilla bean crème brulee. Grilled calamari and lamb shank are a must! The beef appetizer and crème brulee are nothing spectacular but still great. Great cocktail + wine list. Very intimate yet masculine and energetic. Great first experience overall!"

  • "not '21's fault, I went first 40 years ago during the days of the 3 martini lunch and cigars, and a great buzz to the place, power lunches and tourists were discreetly directed to Siberia upstairs. Over the years thanks to the smoking ban, breakfast meetings and political correctness it has slowly but surely changed ino a tourist attraction, mineral water etc. I was not even offered the wine list last visit and there was 1 lonely guy at the bar with a martini. Food and service as good as always, still one of the greatest places anywhere, just different now."

  • "This was our first ever Restaurant Week meal and it was a fine place to start. All the employees were friendly and helped us feel right at home. Due to the reputation of 21, we were apprehensive about this, but we felt comfortable from the outset. Our table was well situated so we both could admire the room (and the other diners, of course). We were pleasantly surprised at the size of the helpings -- from appetizers to desserts, they were ample -- and delicious. Why have we waited so long to participate in Restaurant Week? We'll not make that mistake again!"

  • "21 Club is a "must" on anyone's list of restaurants in New York. I wished we could have gotten there a little earlier to enjoy some drinks at the bar, because there is so much memorabilia to look at and entertain you. It's busy yet cozy. You won't be disappointed!!!!"

  • "I have lived in the city for over 20 years and this was my first visit. What a gem! Not for its cuisine, but for its ambiance , charm, history, and the most thoughtful service I have ever experienced. I will go back. I will go back. To clarify, the food is most acceptable...but dining is all about the experience...and the 21 Club delivers a wonderful experience!"

  • "We had a lovely lunch in a beautiful atmosphere. The wait staff was terrific. Before we left, they pointed out the collection of Remington prints in the lounge. I wanted to take a photo of all the "stuff" hanging from the season, but it was too dark. It was not too dark to read the menu, as there were strategically placed lights shining on each table."

  • "Went back after a long absence. The bar upfront is still solid; great service and pours. Back in the dining room is another story. The service is good and the wine list is adequate and well priced but don't expect to be wowed by anything on your plate. I have had a better Caesar at LaGuardia, the chicken hash was cold and just plain and the porterhouse was dry, thin and overpriced. Get the crab cake, steak tartar and a martini and you will be happy camper."

  • "Salmon/crab coulis & crabcake appetizer and profiterole desserts get an A+. $34 burger and filet entrees, generously, a B-, but what was I thinking ordering filet at 21? I was too impressed by my sumptuous bargain Fortia Chateauneuf to notice the menu didn't specify standard (NY Strip) steak frites. Who serves bland filet with frites? Medium rare came out medium well. But enough of that. Go for Gregory, filling Reverend Robinson's shoes admirably; ask for the wine cellar tour and ask about all those trucks & helmets' origins. Skip the entrees, shamelessly order multiple appetizers and desserts. Enjoy the grand, if derivative, spectacle. There won't be another quite like it. A classic, like seeing Bobby Short, but 21's still here!"

  • "Refreshing to "step back" every now and then at what defines a restaurant. Just marvelous from the moment you are greeted at the door until you are escorted out upon completing your dining experience. Great prixe fix for lunch or go ala' carte, either way you will enjoy your meal. Great roasted mussels and the sole to die for. With all the fancy dishes being prepared in the "modern" restaurants, it's so nice to know where to find honest cooking that's great without the "smoke and mirrors"."

  • "Two evenings ago, my niece and I had dinner at the historic 21 Club on West 52nd street, and received exceptionally poor seating. I specifically stated in my reservations that I wanted excellent seating and view for her birthday celebration. Unfortunately, we were seated in the rear of the club near the swinging doors leading to the kitchen. The movement of waiters from the kitchen made our conservation intolerable, the meal toxic, and the evening appalling. It is obvious customer requests are not honored or read upon making a reservation."

  • "This is a lovely, historic spot with excellent service. The drinks we got were fabulous; the food, with the exception of the crab cakes, was overpriced and not worth the cost."

  • "Unless you're a celeb or mogul of a certain type, you don't dine at 21 Club with any regularity, but it's still a lovely old place with a club atmosphere. Order the 21 burger, pricey but everything a burger should be."

  • "I have been to this restaurant 3 times when I am in NYC. This time I brought a business associate from Long Island who could not believe how good the place was and that I knew about it being from the UK and him kind of local. The waiters knowledge of famous people who spent time at the restaurant makes it very interesting. The food and drink and service are excellent."

  • "We visited on a friends recommendation to celebrate my birthday. Our overall experience was outstanding from the service to the quality of the food. If we ever visit New York again we would definitely return to this restaurant and recommend it to others for that special occasion."

  • "I had a great time at 21 Club. The menu isn't huge but what they have is delicious. I had the Mushroom Soup special which was wonderful & I had the homemade cavatelli with lobster. It was a heavy dish but still delicious."

  • "This is my go-to spot for important dining. Never a regret, embarrassing moment or apology, never too artsy, never too formal or too casual - just absolute NYC class. The food will be perfect, from a thoughtful menu - Uncomplicated while still innovative and always worth it. The wine list is totally flexible (the best to value priced). This time the all important meal was meeting the parents of a gentleman I've been seeing seriously for 8 months. I wanted to impress without intimidation, or missing the multi-generational mark. I needed a variety of menu options to accommodate unknown preferences and top of the line service was a must! Thank you 21 Club - as usual - you delivered! You are the Little Black Dress of NYC Restaurants!!!"

  • "Well if you like old fashion style dinning, with armies of servers coming and going all night tending to your every need, this is place is for you. Yes the food is great and yes the history of the place makes it a very iconic landmark and maybe even a must see place when in NYC...but not our cup of tea. Tables very close together. Service a bit rushed. Place dated and stuffy. Hate to complain and we really enjoyed our meal, but not for us. Older people with an appreciation for how it used to be when you ate at the best of the best, will love the restaurant but younger 50 or lower may not."

  • "I've had the pleasure of dining Upstairs 21 Club for fine dining with friends and just recently the Bar Room for lunch. Both occasions are exceptional on all fronts. Service on top of their game always. Food consistently fabulous and fresh. Atmosphere is from a by-gone error with historical nods everywhere. There is lots of pride in what they do and they certainly know how to make one feel important and not just another patron. If i lived in NYC, this would be one of my "go to spots". Expensive, yes, but its hard to put a price on making memories- Eating is not the same as dining!"

  • "Our sever was aware that we were celebrating my wife's 80th birthday and served dessert with a candle. Nice touch. Great to see this iconic restaurant on the inside after looking at it from the outside during the years we were growing up in NYC."

  • "I took my 12 year old daughter here for a special meal prior to seeing Wicked. The service was engaging as well as prompt (our wait staff talked with my daughter at length, brought her what I interpreted as the best pink lemonade ever made, and never pushed us to turn the table, even though there was a kid at the table -- you know how that often goes). The tartar appetizer was delicious, as was my steak (served with the most flavorful Bernaise sauce) and my daughter's roasted chicken. It was wonderful. "

  • "Booked an early reservation because of theater...trotted down from Four Seasons Hotel and in a half empty room we were promptly seated at the waiter's station/door to kitchen. What in theory seemed like attentive service, in practice mixed up our order, lost an item, and went AWOL when we most needed our check to make the opening curtain. Restaurant staff and management act like they wish everyone was a celebrity and can't adjust in a gracious way to a clientele who is just merely sophisticated and worldly."

  • "I Took my partner to Club 21 for a special 50th birthday treat. I was hoping the experience would be a memorable one for him. The wine selection was vast. The ambience was noisy and we were crammed into a small table at the side of the room squashed between to other couples. Not romantic or private at all. The entrée was lettuce and gluggy mayo, extremely boring and tasteless excuse for a ceasar salad. My pasta dish again lacked flavour ,my partners chicken dish was lovely however. For sweets we shared a souffle which was tasty. The waiters were pushy and appeared to rush us to make selections as if we were at a restaurant that needed the table space for the next booking.Overall I was extremely disappointed with the dining experience. "

  • "I ordered a steak, medium rare. I have eaten at many steak restaurants, from low end to high end, and medium rare is ALWAYS red, with a warm center. My steak was served barely pink. When I complained to the waiter, he said the chef told me I was wrong, and that WAS medium rare. I was appalled. It was NOT how I expected to be treated, after buying a $68 steak. The atmosphere and the rest of the food and service was pretty good, but I will be going elsewhere."

  • "Whenever we travel to NYC we hope that we can book an event in the area so we can dine at least once at 21. The food is always divine, so fresh and adventurous, but still old favorites abound. The service and the room are the best."

  • "It was the day after Memorial Day, maybe everyone - even in NYC - was just not up for another night out? The food portions here are always a little small, the service, though is almost always good. Somehow the service was a bit slow, though, that night, despite the emptiness of the restaurant. My out of town business guest seemed reasonably pleased, if a little underfed."
