  • "The history, the food, the ambience, the service - all make this a "must do"place when you visit New York. We go every time we visit the City and it never disappoints!"

  • "In a city with endless options for high end dining the service at 21 Club is what separates itself from the pack and keeps it thriving after all of these years. The food is very good, as expected for those prices, but the service is perfect, striking the balance between attentive and unobtrusive."

  • "The best "Manhattan" is made at the 21 Club. Perfection!!!!!"

  • "Loved the atmosphere and the service was superb! Everyone was very welcoming and attentive. The lobster bisque was outstanding and crab appetizer was memorable -- so fresh and tasty. Everyone in our party of 4 enjoyed their meals and definitely want to come back."

  • "Everything was very good, from food to wine. Also the service was friendly and professional."

  • "We had a very "nice" night at 21 Club. I have always wanted to go there as it is a New York institution but now having been there & having had a" nice" time, once is enough. I would tell others to go for the experience but other restaurants have far better food, ambience & service. It was a "nice" night with no wow factor. A very safe experience, imagine it would go down very well with grandmothers & old aunts. Also the Fixed price menu that finished at 6.30pm looked much more appealing & value for money than the a la carte menu."

  • "Normally I write amazing reviews about this place, but this last visit was very disappointing. First, we were asked to wait at the bar for a 7:45 reservation, which is fine as they normally would get us. However, 8:15 came and I had to have the waitress ask if my table was ready, only to have her come back and say that it had been for about 20 minutes. Ok, mistakes happen, so I moved on quickly, but after we ordered, they were out of the wine I picked, and the Steak tartar was unusually small and even though we asked for spicy, there wasn't any to be found, so we had to have them bring us tobacco sauce to spice it up. Not usually what you expect from this restaurant and we will go back one day to see if the above was an anomaly or not."

  • "Very overprice for the quality of the food. The wine is definitely super overpriced."

  • "Lousy food...It used to be so good but now, it seems that no one is paying attention to cold chicken hash and brown lettuce in the cobb salad......should not be. I am sorely disappointed after going there for years..."

  • "We are always excited to return to "21" for any reason!"

  • "21 is one of the great "retro" restaurants in NYC. Very traditional, jackets required for dinner. The menu is full of long standing customer favorites."
    Dined on 3/25/2014
  • "The food was something I could get at a truck stop diner and tasted very bland. The house wine tasted cheap. Service was mediocre. I was extremely disappointed."
    Dined on 3/22/2014
  • "This place was the original speakeasy. Now a restaurant, there is a lot of history with this place. The maitre d' and some of the old school servers have attitude. The food is good. The drinks are fantastic. Good place to take your dad."
    Dined on 3/3/2014
  • "Really one of the great legendary New York restaurants. Good strong gin martinis, rye manhattans and other classics. The food a classic grill menu with great steaks, chops, and fish, well prepared. The steak tartare is outstanding and the oysters are terrific. The wine list was breathtaking it its breadth and depth. I am pleased to be able to take my adult children there, as I was taken, as were my parents before me..."

  • "Went to 21 Club with my girlfriend for Valentines Day. The food was absolutely fantastic and the wine sommelier picked a perfect (and relatively inexpensive) bottle of white for us. The 5-course meals was pretty pricy (as expected), but it's completely worth the price. We also did the tour of their wine cellar and stayed at the bar for a drink or two afterwards. The finishing touch of giving my girlfriend a rose as she was leaving was a great cherry on top. Fantastic meal overall."

  • "I dine at high end restaurants all the time. When wait staff think they are doing you the client a favor serving you - time for new staff. Food was nothing special."

  • "Made reservation here just to see the main bar room and all it's tradition. The stop was awesome. Food and drinks were great, service was extremely attentive and accomadating. This is a must stop to any mid town traveler."

  • "Wonderful meal at iconic landmark. Drinks are overpriced and we were disappointed that we couldn't take a tour of wine cellar after being told they should be able to get us down. This is classic NYC bar and dining scene."
    Dined on 3/22/2014
  • "Old School Service - made you feel very welcomed as soon as you entered the door and all the way. However my diver scallops was prepared too salty and the texture was tough. The seafood platter was $85.00 but the portion was very small, they could put an extra two clams etc to fill up the two tiers. It is a place to be seen but the cooking skill can be updated."

  • "Have always wanted to dine here. Go for the fixed price lunch to sample the food. The lunch is a great way to sample the food and excellent service. Feels like a private club - both with looks and service. Drinks can be pricey - be prepared to pay around $20 for a classic cocktail. Will go back. We loved that a dress code is still enforced and men are required to wear jackets."

  • "Maybe because it was food week in NYC. But food was overpriced and not that great. Service was okay. But not very attentive. This place is living on its reputation. I had better food and service in Truckee, California than in this establishment. We are foodies from California!!!"

  • "maybe it was because it was restaurant week. the evening seemed very rushed. the wine was barely poured when our appetizers arrived. yes all the food was delicious. but we were not even offered coffee with our dessert. that is not good service. what should have been a great evening was marred by feeling rushed. restaurant week is a good time to impress someone who may be back on another nite. can't say i was sufficiently impressed to return."

  • "I love this place. You step back in time for sure but it is a must-do dining experience. Took my 13 year old. There we many tweens and teens dining on a Friday night. Classic, conservative fare. Definitely not for the budget-minded diner though."

  • "Food & service very good. The decoration inside it's very funny. A perfect restaurant for a special occasion."

  • "We had a 5:30 pm reservation. Arrived 5 minutes early and was told to wait in bar until our reservation at 5:30. At 5:30 they asked who with a 5:30 reservation was ready to be seated. We went right away. The restaurant was just about empty. We were seated in the bar room, which we requested. It took a few minutes for a waiter to come to our table. Once he did, service was better. The waiter knew we had a 7:00pm show to attend, so he was conscious of our time. Two of us split the octopus appetizer, and loved it. They split it for us. I had the steak tartare which was good. One person had the artic char and another had beef short ribs. We enjoyed our meal and made it to the show in perfect time."

  • "Family of 4 dined and were just not happy with overall experience. Service was great from welcome to exit. The apps were very good (oysters and tuna tartare) my steak was over cooked as was my sons also closer to medium or med well (ordered med rare). Not complainers so we let it go. Wife and daughter were just okay with their meals. We were told which table we sat at and whom famously used to sit there. However, we were not given any other tidbits about the "famous" 21 club. Again just disappointing. With so many choices I wish it have been at least an 8/10 vs the 5 or 6 that it was."

  • "The food was delicious. And we greatly appreciated that we were allowed to linger a long time after finishing our meal as they were clearing and setting the tables for the dinner session."

  • "The hype to go dine-in at this place dies down as soon as you get seated at your table. The servers are very rude and expects you to know everything. The food quality is horrible and lacks proper taste. I would never recommend anyone to go there and spend the money. There are much better restaurants in the city with better food quality, exponentially better service, and outstanding dinning ambiance."

  • "The Crab cake was a little dry. The beef was superb and soft and so was the sauce but it came served with 3 nano-carrots. Some vegetables or potatoes would have been nice. If I was a man, I would have starved. Great creme bruleé. Nice atmosphere, good service. Can't understand why the beef was so poorly served. It seems true what they say about restaurant week. Maybe its not a good time to visit renowned restaurants as this. Overall it was pleasant but not the outstanding experience I expected."

  • "Outstanding rich history, superb location. The food is fantastic (one of the best salmon dishes in NYC), with their own cocktails (cucumber dill delight with heavenly textured taste) and a notable wine list. Uniquely great ambience (there is an option of a busy bar, diner for groups on the main level, as well as more of a romantic private upper level area). Noise was tolerable, given the place being full on a Friday night. The service adheres to timely fashion even when busy. The chefs serving are pleasant. We had more than one waiter assigned to our table, that was a little confusing, and they didn't seem to communicate."

  • "The "21" Club is a New York landmark and part of the history of NYC. Although they are continually updating and remodeling the rooms, it still has the original rooms from the prohibition days which are probably untouched. I take out-of-towners there as well as go there with my friends after work or before the theater. I love the atmosphere and the attentive service. The wine list is also notable. I would recommend it to everyone."

  • "The 21 club is, the 21 club - upscale without being stuffy. The staff couldn't have been more professional and welcoming. The food was delicious. I must admit that, after reading some of the reviews, I was not expecting to enjoy it quite as much as we all did. The tuna tartare was wonderful. The only problem was that I couldn't finish my very rich, cheesy chicken hash (in order to save room for the delightful creme brûlée). Not the lightest meal, but worth every calorie; all accompanied by a lovely Merlot and followed by a cappuccino with a decadently thick crema. While it was crowded, we never felt either cramped or rushed."

  • "We had a pre-theater dinner at 21 and as always it was a wonderful beginning to a great evening. My favorite is the steak tartare and pommes soufflé. My daughter ordered that and I had the restaurant week menu. The salmon tartare was excellent! The salmon entrée was only so-so. I asked for it to be prepared rare and it was definitely overcooked. But the lemon blueberry sundae for dessert made up for the less-than-perfect main course. I have to admit though, the steak tartare and pommes soufflé where the best part of the dinner and in the future I think we may both order it-- just because we like it so much!"

  • "The 21 Club is still the iconic, high-end speakeasy/bistro it has been since prohibition. I'm guessing about the timeline because I'm not that old, but they have certainly done their best to preserve the decor and ambience: dark wood, plush carpets and the famous tchotchkes hanging from the ceiling. The service is prompt and friendly, but they do have you in and out. If you want to linger, you can go to the bar where they have gorgeous flower arrangements. We have been here before, and this time we enjoyed a lovely meal during restaurant week. Crisp, fresh Caesar salad for both of us, chicken hash (tasty comfort food) for him, short ribs (braised for five hours, I was told, making them tender and buttery) for me. Nice experience."

  • "Was looking forward to finally drinking and dining in the venerable old 21 Club. What surprised me was how small it was inside. Stiil, this made for the nice, intimate clubby atmosphere. Cocktails were good but not particularly potent (I had a couple of Southsides). Loved the cozy fireplace with overstuffed chairs in front fireplace especially as it was a freezing cold evening. The collection of memorabilia (toy sized airplanes, trucks, football helmets, etc.) hanging from the ceiling in the very visible dining room made for a kitschy but fun view. The food was a complete disappointment! Salmon was dry and the famed chicken hash was as bland as can be. Service was great - attentive and friendly. All in all, pleasant but I won't hurry back."

  • "This is the second time I went to 21 Club for a Restaurant Week. The restaurant is both elegant and classy. Wonderful Waite staff, our reservation was for 2:00 pm and we were seated promptly. Food was excellent and served beautifully. Wonderful experience."

  • "Sort of fun/clubby...food decidedly mediocre, very disappointing"

  • "We went earlier this week and ordered from the Restaurant Week menu. All courses were delicious and my wife especially loved the bisque she had as a starter. We were intrigued by the toys and models that were hanging from the ceiling and we asked one of the gents looking after customers about them. The gentleman - Phil - obviously had intense pride about the place and told us about the history of this tradition, the restaurant and even about the table we were sat at. I found his sincere respect for 21 to be very touching and it added something special to our evening that was unique and memorable."
