Diner Reviews
  • "I have been told in the past that 1899 Bar and Grill has very poor food, and for the longest time I took people's advice. However when I went there with my boyfriend we had a wonderful time! The food was really good and the service was spectacular! I would definitely recommend this restaurant to my friends."

  • "A little pricey but steak was delicious as was the salmon. We would go back next visit to Flagstaff as our one splurge."

  • "Restaurant is pleasant enough with unsurprising food. Not sure I would visit it again. Student servers were very good."

  • "The food was very good...we had the beef stroganoff and the meat was tender and the noodles perfect. Pork tacos were delicious and the bread fresh and warm with tastey butter selections. The atmosphere does not suit the cuisine...a bit bright and had more of a lunchtime feel...like an upscale cafeteria. Dimming the lights would make a difference. Decent wine selection...tried the local red it was delightful."

  • "I had the NY Strip, rare with cheesy mashed potatoes. The steak was perfectly cooked and exhibited bold, mouthwatering flavors. The mashed potatoes were thick and decadent by their use of cheese in the mash."

  • "This is fine dining, I would not have named it a bar and grill. Yes, there is a bar and yes, you can, if you wish, watch the chef at work. The food was exquisite. Superb sauces, fish was not overcooked. Green beans right from the garden, still crispy and very full of flavor. A delicate salad with amazing black bean dressing (you heard that right). Fluffy whipped sweet potatoes. Perfectly cooked pasta. Delicious rosemary rolls with three kinds of spreads. Very good and cheerful service. The three of us were amazed at such a wonderful restaurant on the campus of NAU. Try it, you will like it! We had salmon, mahi mahi and penne pasta with a house salad."

  • "We stayed at the Drury and they offered a simple dinner for free but it was not our cup of tea. So we asked about the place next door and it offered a much better environment, a full bar, and decent menu of choice. For and service was not exceptional but based on the other places nearby, it looked like the best option. Keep in mind that we have eaten at many fine restaurants. Heck, the bar carried Hendricks gin and the food was fresh. No complaints but nothing exceptional for a higher rating."

  • "Not a notable place, but it's really the only thing like it in Flagstaff. It's bad by any means, isn't great by any other though."

  • "We have eaten at 1899 on several other times and been very impressed. However, our meal on Sunday was very disappointing. The vegetable of the day was steamed green beans which were very plain and undercooked, not to mention something I could have made at home. The rice was bland and several of the people in our party were not impressed with their starter salads and main dishes. The salads arrived at different times and there was some sort of plastic material baked onto my meat. Needless to say, we do not recommend 1899 and will not be visiting again."

  • "The decor at 1899 is both contemporary and welcoming. There was a nice bar and a comfortable lounge area with fireplace which makes it ideal for cocktails and appetizers. We had an early dinner reservation, so there were not too many people in the dining room, but I can see it could noisy on a busy night. Although the dinner menu is limited, the food was excellent, the staff was extremely attentive and friendly and the wine was well-priced. I highly recommend the lobster-stuffed mushroom appetizer and the mole port porterhouse. They are not open for lunch on weekends, which is unfortunate because we are generally in town at that time and the lunch menu was more diverse than dinner."

  • "This was overall one of the worst dining experiences we've ever had. Our server was completely unwelcoming and seemed to be miserable; the food reminded us of a school cafeteria; and we were seated at a very awkward table even though there were plenty of tables open that weren't so "out of the way" feeling. We will definitely not return."

  • "Everything was amazingly perfect, it was simply the best place that I could have chosen to spend the anniversary of my relationship."

  • "Tried the lightest entire I could find on the menu, pasta with sun dried tomatoes. It arrived with way more glop than pasta, and it could have been used to plaster a wall. Expected a light healthy sauce. Only ate maybe one-tenth of this way too heavy dish, and the remainder was in full view when the manager came by to ask how everything was. We said the lobster stuffed mushroom appetizer was terrific, but the pasta was inedible. He nodded, and left without a word. Not even, sorry you did not like it. I wrote up the same comment in detail on the provided comment card, along with my e-mail, but have not heard anything. Server was good, atmosphere fine, menu in general lacking lighter entrées, and the pasta in particular a disaster."

  • "I usually come here about every two weeks or so and, until my most recent trip, without any complaints. The food is pretty good and the prices may be a tad too high for some people to swallow. While I tend to stick to my usual order, my friends often jump around the menu and have typically enjoyed their selection. Since this restaurant is on campus, formal wear is not required (although recommended if you're trying to impress a date)."

  • "The ambiance is fun, modern and slightly more formal than the usual casual Flagstaff restaurant. This restaurant attracts college students in jeans and older couples dressed up for a night out. The open seating plan is nice but leaves little room for intimate dining. The bonus is that it was not very noisy inside and the sound did not travel far. The lighting is dim and the colors rich so it does make for a wonderful late night experience. The food is what stole the show here. My husband and I had the wedge salad (bacon, blue cheese, mango and candied red onions), lobster mushrooms and the filet (medium rare). By far one of the best meals I've had here in town."

  • "We made reservations early. They had a nice table ready on time in a privet room. Really nice. Service was good. Table did not have bread plates had to ask for them. Person who delivered food did not know who's good was who's. Server did not check on us very often. Overall minor problems. Food was very well prepared. Would eat there again. Deserts were awesome"

  • "Our waiter took forever to get anything to us. At the end of our meal we asked to get a desert to go and to get a check. We waited 30 minutes to get the desert and the check. During that time our waiter completely ignored us. She was helping the tables around us although never came to ask if we needed a refill or came to tell us that desert was going to take longer than expected. We were pretty disappointed with the service because the price of the food was pricey. I would have understood a little bit more if the restaurant was busy although there was less than half of the tables filled up in the whole entire restaurant."

  • "Everything that I ordered was very tasty, but the menu overall is not very interesting. Some more interesting/varied dishes would make me more inspired to return."

  • "40 minutes to get my food. Rice was cold. $18 Salmon was overcooked. Mac and Cheese had as much flavor as the napkin my silverware was wrapped in. The best part of dinner was the wine, partly because of the fact that I needed booze to sit through my horrible dining experience. I am grateful the waitress/manager did bring me another salmon which was cooked as it was supposed to be but for an $80.00 tab for 2 with just 2 entrees and 2 glasses of wine I really wish I had a time machine to choose a different restaurant that night. Save your money and your tastebuds. 3 stars on service and ambience because it was corrected and apologized for ( I know it wasn't the waitress or manager on duty's fault) and the restaurant itself does look cool."

  • "There is no way we could exaggerate the experience at 1899. Convenient location directly behind the Drury Inn Suites with plenty of free parking, just off Butler at Milton, the majestic entry offers 20ft vaulted ceilings, bold and massive fireplace and a tight but friendly bar. Plenty of Libtard coeds at the bar. But the dining area is separate and quite sophisticate. Servers are incredibly professional, yet personable, friendly and knowledgeable. Wine list is is pathetic. Everything else is so above par! Live, talented music is beyond belief. We have dined in many of the world's finest restaurants and never have felt more valued and appreciated than here. Highest marks sans none! Joe & Barbara Amadeo Flagstaff, AZ"

  • "1899 Bar and Grill went above and beyond to accommodate our 10 person group. We booked through open table and arrived to find they had reserved a private room for us, which was perfect. They waited on us hand and foot, served great food, and the bartended took incredible care to ensure we had everything we needed. I'd go back here in a second, and would definitely recommend to friends."

  • "I took my girlfriend here for our first date, some six or so months ago and we went back again last week. The food and service are always phenomenal, everything was relatively quick in regards to preparation and our waitress was very thorough checking back regularly to ensure that everything was good. I've been to quite a few upper quality restaurants and this one is definitely chief among them in regards to the overall dining quality and experience. With close proximity to campus and their accepting of dining dollars it makes it an excellent choice for the nau student."

  • "The food was good. My wife had the ribeye which was delicious. I had the sea scallops which were good. I wouldn't call 1899 fine dining but you will definitely get a good meal there. It is fairly noisy because it's a large open room and lots of college kids being attached to NAU. The bill for 2 will be a little over $100 with an appetizer, salad, a cocktail and main course."

  • "I took my wife to 1899 for a special occasion. It was our first visit there, and had heard good things, so we had high expectations for a very nice dinner. The server wss friendly and enthusiastic, and the food was great, but my order was screwed up twice, and neither the server nor the manager offered to compensate us for the trouble by giving us our drinks free, knocking a percentage off the whole bill, something, but nothing was ever offered, and it kinda soured my whole experience at the place. We may go there again someday, but it wont be my first choice for a nice dinner."

  • "1899 did not disappoint. The food was prepared to perfection and was flavorful and hot when it arrived at our table. Robin was our waitress and she was fantastic! We did not have to ask for anything. Robin was very attentive to our table. We will definitely return to 1899 when we are in Flagstaff next time!!"

  • "I went for lunch with my dorm buddies and we had a ball. They have a KILLER burger during lunch, and the rest of the menu looked awesome too. Great service, the place is clean, everything was phenomenal. The best part is that it's right near where I live, so I'll be back!"

  • "The service was amazing. My water glass never went under half full and the waiter/waitress were very friendly and conversational, not monotonous and distant. I was very impressed with my food. I brought my boyfriend there for the first time for both of us when he visited last weekend and we were both very happy with our decision. It has a romantic feel for couples, but also a good place for just friends to get dinner. I will definitely be returning. However, I usually put the tip on my credit card so I was not prepared when I used my dining dollars to pay for the meal, resulting in a smaller tip than I would have liked to have left. Overall, I am very impressed with the atmosphere, staff, and food."

  • "Basically, all the good was microwaved and the ingredients were all low grade cafeteria quality food. Literally couldn't eat it and left. Price was still well over $100 for 3 people. Went to a chain to eat something edible later. Have never paid so much for such low quality. Very disappointing. Service was fine and ambience nice. It's a shame the food quality was so awful."

  • "Arrived late for the reservation due to parking problems and unfamiliarity with the on again off again one way streets. In spite of being late, the staff greater me warmly and assured me my reservation was "safe". My wife and I were struck by the elegant yet casual ambiance of the restaurant. We ordered the marinated chicken with spaghetti squash, the chicken was served under a hominy potato sauce that was expertly seasoned. For desert we shared a gluten free chilli brownie with Carmel gelato ice cream. The prices were very reasonable. It was a wonderful experience after a long day's drive. I would go back to Flag Staff just to have a meal at the 1899Bar and Grill."
