Diner Reviews
  • "My wife's sister was in town from Florida and we took her out for dinner and to show her some of the nicer places in town. We we very shocked at the attitude of our waiter with a very flippant attitude. I believe he was the only one working but still he attitude was not that of what I expected to receive at the Driskill. I was embarrassed as we had been to three other establishments previous to this and received the outstanding service that I usually find when attending restaurants in Austin. Other than that the food was delicious as always, but the service was terrible. ~ Very Disappointed..."

  • "Everything was just great about this. No complaints at all!"

  • "While this is normally considered the informal dining area--i.e., soups/salads/sandwiches--of the stately old Driskill Hotel in downtown Austin, we were presented with a special Valentine's Day menu. I had the filet and my companion had the scallops. Both were excellent. The service was extraordinary and the ambience set the romantic mood for which we were searching. Breakfast, the next morning was equally as satisfying and, again, the service was excellent."

  • "I was in town for the holidays and wanted to find a special place for Christmas Dinner for my family as I was hosting. The Driskill Hotel has always been a special place for me. It's a beautiful building steeped in history. When I saw they had availability, I immediately called. I asked if they were doing anything special for Christmas Day and was told yes, they would be serving a "brunch" menu. This sounded wonderful, I made the reservation in anticipation of a "brunch" worthy of the Driskill. Instead, it was their normal brunch menu which includes the "Hangover Omelette", the "Hangover Burger"and the "Hippie Hollow". The only thing on the menu that remotely resembled "brunch" was the Eggs Benedict. A letdown... Good service"

  • "Disappointing. We wanted a low key place with special memories for my aging mother in law on Christmas Eve. The service ruined it for us. It was only moderately active, so I am not sure what the problem was. We had to remind our server repeatedly about drink orders, that is if we could get his attention. Their "hand crafted" ginger ale was sprite with grenadine. The bartender was sighing loudly and slamming boxes, obviously angry about something. This was an unfortunate experience, because the hotel looked lovely for the holidays."

  • "This is the perfect place for Thanksgiving brunch. It is very quiet and private; the decor is lovely; the food is great; and the service is attentive. It's becoming my favorite place to start the holiday season early on a Thanksgiving morning."

  • "After reading mixed reviews I decided to take a chance during my Austin trip, and book an impromptu lunch the last day. Glad I did! Set in the grand ambiance of this 19th century hotel, the cafe is yet informal. Promptly seated. My waitress was very polite, sweet; gave me time to look over the menu; made suggestions. Although I was going to get one of the burgers, I went with the Roasted Chicken & Brie Melt suggested by my waitress. I'm glad I did as it was just the ticket: nothing was dry or unappetizing; the meat was tender, the roasted apple and the hatch chile aioli set it off perfectly. The handcut fries were crisp, not overly well done. The manager checked in with me at the end to make sure all was fine. It definitely was!"

  • "We were seated in the foyer, which was ok but we were the only group out there so we were an afterthought to our server. There were long periods of time with no attention at all. When we went to pay the check we split among the group and the waitress clearly did not understand what we were telling her. Instead of clarifying she kept saying "I know". She did not distribute the payments as we had requested but due to the long wait times we were running late and had to get back to the office, so we worked it out among ourselves. Not the way we have been treated in the past. We will come back and give them another chance, food is too good and prior service has been good so we do not think this is the norm."

  • "Loved our brunch. Everything was perfect. Since we made a reservation we were given a window booth. Food and service was excellent."

  • "Having been to the 1886 before for a group on Christmas Eve, no less, i knew the restaurant to have good food and excellent service. this visit didn't disappoint either. I had the shrimp tacos which were delicious. The restaurant is right there on the edge of Congress and 6th street in the famed Driskell Hotel."

  • "When you first walk in to the cafe, you are greeted by friendly staff and you are struck by the beauty of the place. Unfortunately, the food was not up to par. After taking nearly 30 minutes to arrive, my "Hangover Omelette" was minuscule and almost too salty to eat. The only saving grace for out visit was the coffee, which was very good."

  • "Loved the meal, ambience, and beautiful hotel, but the waiter was a bit grouchy and sloppy for a more sophisticated place in a nice hotel. When I asked his advice about an item, he said "it's your money, do what you want," and he several times asked "you kids doin' alright?" (we were all adults and certainly older than he). I don't even recall a smile! He definitely soured the experience, but it was a beautiful place with great food."

  • "I work nearby, and we took our first trip for lunch a few days ago. The Driskill is such a fun hotel, and has some excellent architechure, but to be honest, the food was even better. I had the turkey BLT, and I highly recommend it. The fresh fruit is also really good. One of our guests had the fresh fruit soda, and loved it."

  • "This is a cute cafe that needs some help in the food and service department. While my husbands burger was delicious, my gnocchi was burned. My gnocchi was a dark brown color, and it definitely looked and tasted burned. Also, the restaurant was out of ribeye (we were told not to order this because they were out) and they were also out of hibiscus ginger syrup used to make a cocktail that my husband ordered. Also, while we were there a waiter slipped and fell on some water, while a waitress who was chatting with some customers at another table, said, "Oh I was just about to put a sign up," and then continued to chat with the customers while other waiters and patrons walked on the wet floor. A few minutes later, the waitress put the sign up."

  • "An easy place to have a business lunch; prompt service; decent food; natural light; valet parking or walk from downtown locations; easy to hear each other talk, but lively enough environment to be interesting. The Driskill Hotel building is beautiful inside, and the restaurant period decor is interesting and comfortable."

  • "my wife and i went here for a late dessert. my wife ordered tea, and i ordered a decaf coffee with their awesome chocolate cake. i changed my coffee order to a decaf americano. he brought me coffee. i didnt make a big deal out of it b/c my wife and i just wanted to have some time to enjoy by ourselves and our meter was running outside b/c for some reason the parking meter would not take any of our cc's. we only had about 30 min to have a quick dessert and walk back to the car. other than that, our experience was great. our table was waiting for us with water on the table when we got there. outside of the coffee snafu, good as always."

  • "It was an easy walk from the parking garage at One American Center. We had a great supper and then had plenty of time to get to our show at the nearby Paramount Theater."

  • "My experince started the moment I walked into the hotel with its splendid architechture. I am from NC and a friend suggested that I not leave Austin without visiting the 1886 Cafe. I must say that I am glad that I followed her advice. Our server was knowledgeable about the menu and willing offered advice as we thought about first our selection of a cocktail (fantastic by the way), our entree, and finally our desert. I took his advice on the banana pudding to be described in one word "WOW!". I come to Austin at least once a year to attend a conference. Rest assured that I will not leave again without a stop by your restuarant."

  • "Been to 1886 multiple times and the food and service is consistently good. Some dishes are better than others but that is obviously with any restaurant. The last time I went I got the Salmon Burger with a side of Spinach and I do believe I have found what I will be getting from now on. It was delicious."

  • "Great spot for a Valentine's day dinner - but the trout really disappointed. Fishy and mushy do not mix well. The steak was good, the dessert heavenly. The baked brie was perfectly cooked, but whatever that other thing was supposed to be was totally forgettable. Our waitress was spot-on all night!"

  • "Reasonable food in a historic setting, and a great place to kick off date night on 6th Street! The staff were all extremely gracious, and the food was great."

  • "Very good service and beautiful historic setting, but the food needs some work. The prime rib sandwich was very fatty, the fish was overcooked and under-seasoned, and the pulled pork shoulder was tough. Highlights include strawberry lemonade, steak fries and dessert (pecan/banana bread and brownie)."

  • "Our waiter, Aaron, started things off perfectly. He correctly advised us to eat sparingly and save room for dessert. The brisket-burger (known as the Austin, TX) literally melted in our mouths. The Mac-cheese was sumptuous. But, it was the dessert, the pumpkin - ricotta cheesecake, that topped them all. Good thing that we shared everything. I know that we can only rate up to a 5 star level, but this restaurant is clearly a "seven!""

  • "The food was quite good but the person stationed at the reception desk was harried and it took a while to be seated. Then, it appeared we'd been seated in a section that didn't have an assigend server. Once we flagged down someone, things settled down and we enjoyed the meal. But the initial impression was not good and if it weren't for the fact that there aren't many places open on Christmas Eve (we don't have family in the area and always eat out for holidays) we probably would not go back. But, since we will probably need somewhere to go on another holiday, it might be a choice again."

  • "Service Very Slow. Waitress very unattentive--finally had to get manager to help us and she was very good. Blackened burger was breaded and NOT blackened. They did their best to make up for it by comping the wine and desert. Will not go back."

  • "Last year it was fun, food very good and service outstanding, this year it was below average at best. It is a beautiful place but nothing special for lunch."

  • "My food was ok (French Dip sandwich - lacked in seasoning and flavor.) my husband loved his Veggie Flatbread. I think that if I chose seething else on the menu, especially from the weekend brunch menu, we would have both been happy.Service was ok, we weren't told of the daily specials and when my husband heard it being told by another server to a separate table, he was a bit disappointed as it was something he definitely would have ordered. The hotel is really cool inside and luckily since we made reservations we were seated inside the hotel rather than inside the cafe. We will definitely come back on the weekend to try their brunch which we have heard is fabulous."

  • "We had an out-of-town guest and wanted to impress them with the Driskill experience. I am happy to say you did not disappoint. The atmosphere was nice and the food was tremendous. One person in our party said it was the best burger she ever had. The best part of our experience was our waiter, Charles, who was engaging without being intrusive. He was helpful and joked with us about things. It was an incredible experience and we are coming back on Saturday for brunch."

  • "Overpriced, below average hotel food. Perhaps the other restaurant at the driskill is good, but don't let that sway you into coming to 1886. It was like eating applebees food at a huge markup. The server brought out the wrong entree and messed up little things like switching up who had what dessert, which isn't that big a deal if the restaurant doesn't come.with an air of pretentiousness with staff with little earpieces like the FBI or something. The only thing this place has going for it is the patio on a nice day. Chocolate cake is terrible here. Ate one bite. Last thing, portions are way too big. Obesity portions. Like I said, Applebees."

  • "Austin is a great venue for food. 1866 is definitely worth visiting. It is more of a cafe as advertised so the menu is a little limited, but what is available is tasty. Give it a try among several others in the downtown area."

  • "I had the Hickory Roasted half Chicken for $15.00 and the other person had the Austin, TX Burger, this person enjoyed the burger but I did NOT enjoyed the chicken. I could tell that they had just reheated the chicken to lukewarm stage and poured over the hickory sauce! The side dish of spinach I had was a little on the sour side! I'm sorry to say that I did not enjoyed as much as the first!! I have had the High Tea, which I will recommend. Very nice High Tea but it's $$$$!"

  • "A quaint cafe amid the bustling craziness of 6th street. Quality food prepared to be appealing yet not works of art that one would feel terrible to disturb. Dessert is where it is locked and loaded. Sumptuous works of art that are as delightful on the palette as they are to admire."

  • "I had heard of the Driskill hotel and the restaurant and knew I wanted to attend. I was not disappointed. The ambiance was very nice, we were seated immediately. Our food took awhile to come but while we sat we were able to take in the beauty of the 1886 cafe, the servers seemed very attentive and when our food arrived piping hot, the chef came out personally to inquire how was the service. I will definitely come again it was worth the wait and that was just lunch! Looking forward to dinner."

  • "The Cafe & Bakery staff were incredible! We had a large group, and could only reserve a table for 10, but when more than we expected showed up, the staff were incredibly accommodating and sat our friends at a table right by us. The food was delicious, everyone was incredibly friendly, and we had a blast."
