  • "Were here for 25th anniversary while visiting Monterrey. I was a bit worried when the hostess tried to seat us at a banquette seat, RIGHT beside a couple of old ladies (seriously?! wasn't even crowded) I politely asked to move to a quieter section with highback chairs & she nicely obliged. Our server Alix, was very friendly and knowledgeable, not too obtrusive. Had 5 course tasting menu, was wonderful overall: complimentary amuse bouche of green tomato shooter, yummy, biscuits, avocado (ok, but underdressed), white corn soup-to-die-for, comte ravioli yummy, beef (tasty & tender but slightly oversalted for my taste as was the kale under the ravioli a bit salty. Want to come back for more casual meal outside. Do the absinthe pyro style-FUN!"

  • "This is always my go to spot in Monterey. Consistently excellent service. The menu has a lot of variety. Food is always really fresh and flavorful. Every room, including the bar and outside patio, is really beautiful. The ambience is really romantic and traditional with a modern edge. Can't wait to go back!"

  • "Atmospheric from the outside at night. Bone marrow dish delicious and Pork belly mini burgers starter a winner with all 4 of us. Proscuitto and egg pizza very poor: two eggs on top were not cooked properly ( egg whites translucent), pizza dough blistered and burnt in parts and excessively salty (my young adult daughtered ended up with very sore tummy that night) My Seabass was delightful and cous cous flavoured beautifully. Cod dish good too. Pizza with eggplant was also disappointing and eggplant was runny and turned dough a little soggy. Service was sub standard even for an 8.45pm Wednesday sitting (e.g.no light on table inspite of asking 2 times for it to be lit. A $260disappointment. Front of house needs attention as do Pizzas."

  • "This was an overall amazing evening. The menu was simple yet clever. We opted for the Chef's menu and added the wine pairing. Our overall experience was nearly 2 hours, but there was never a moment where we felt a lull. The food was prepared with care and talent. The wine list impressive! The restaurant is located inside of a historic house and there is much to explore! Each room brings a different vibe and meets the needs of all diners. Outdoors is adorned with fire pits for a romantic (and warm) alternative! Highly recommended!"

  • "We went to Monterey to celebrate our 7th wedding anniversary and were looking for a restaurant with good food and a romantic touch. We found that at 1833, housed in an old, partly adobe house with many fire lit rooms. We were seated in a multi-windowed room, quite nice for our early dinner as we could see the pleasant grounds. Our servers were pleasant and knowledgeable about the food which was varied and included small bits, pizza and pasta as well as more usual entrees such as the halibut with a wonderful sauce that I unfortunately can't recall the ingredients. My husband enjoyed his pork loin, also with a wonderful sauce."

  • "Great food, great service, unbelievable spirits list, and refreshingly unique character all around sets 1833 well apart from the dozens of Monterey restaurants that offer the typical bistro fare, Americanized Italian, and/or uninspired seafood. Let the tourists fill the bistros that relentlessly quest after their Michelin Stars by charging $300 for a stick of butter with a truffle on top with some overpriced overrated local wine; why would you join them when just down the street you can enter this time machine, eat marrow from the bone, and wash it down with enough absinthe to make your dreams interesting. Go to 1833."

I would say that the appetizers outshine the entrées and the avocado appetizer and shrimp appetizer were fantastic. Made the mistake of ordering the chicken which was just okay while my wife's salmon dish was much better."

  • "My friend and I greatly enjoyed the special 4th of July afternoon buffet-style BBQ at 1833 with live music. We sat at the bar, where Biggie and Avi served us. We both enjoyed Biggie's special rum punch, and I enjoyed Avi's sidecar. The menu was impressive: bacon and cheddar biscuits with maple chile butter; deviled eggs; chilled golden gazpacho shooters; chilled watermelon and mint; pole bean and fingerling potato salad with mustard vinaigrette and sieved egg; herb marinated heirloom tomatoes with peaches and burrata; charred sweet corn on the cob with basil butter, espelette, and sea salt; baked butter beans; cornbread; fried chicken; smoked and pulled pork shoulder; sweet rolls; banana creme pies; and strawberry shortcake trifle. Yum!"

  • "The food was good, but not as great as we had come to expect during our visit to northern California. The menu online looked appealing. However we learned that the menu changes daily. I didn't find an appetizer that appealed to me and only one entree was of interest. The food fell short of the layers of flavor we had enjoyed elsewhere. I had the sense that we were in the hands of an ambitious but unpolished chef. The complimentary coconut chile beverage was awful. The room we were in was lovely with window walls covered by greenery. The other rooms were equally charming. Our server seemed judgemental of our choices and falsely enthusiastic over dessert he later admitted he had not served to anyone previously. Deserves a second chance."

  • "Our server was one of the best I've had. Knew the menu and wines down to the details. Very friendly, yet not chummy and very professional yet not condescending. The menu was imaginative and cutting edge without being over the top. It was obvious that the chef was passionate about his cuisine. We dined early in the evening, and enjoyed the downstairs room almost to ourselves - I can only hope the service and cuisine are as enjoyable during peak hours, but it was very noteworthy for the right reasons. One minor complaint... the furniture, particularly the light colored chairs... was filthy! Fortunately this was quickly forgotten with brilliant service and cuisine."

  • "My colleague and I enjoyed "The Experience," which is a spectacular multi-course dinner. Our server was Whitney, and we had a great table in the main dining room. After the amuse bouche of watermelon soup, the first course was a bacon cheddar biscuit with maple butter. Next was an excellent dish of raw oysters on the half shell, followed by the heirloom tomato salad with stone fruit and burrata (a delightful summertime tradition at 1833). Then came the comte ravioli, followed by the steak with spinach. Dessert was the last course. I had a chocolate dessert with milk ice cream, and my colleague had the bourbon pudding. We also enjoyed the drinks. I had a sidecar, and my colleague had a Commander in Chief and a Suspicious Minds. Yum!"

The menu is manageable and does not necessarily inspire. Do not be fooled! The food is sublime. Every dish in our party of six was outstanding filled with exquisite flavors. The truffle chicken was word he one hour wait. Move time for appetizers, cocktails and conversation. The doctors special dessert was remarkable in variety and presentation. GO NOW!!! "

You have to pay for biscuits (no bread is provided) which tend to be dry. Restrooms was always out of paper towels."

  • "My friend and I enjoyed social hour, where our server was Brendan. My friend had red wine, and I had a sidecar. We also had the truffle popcorn. For dinner, we had a great seat in the main dining room, where our server was Kalina. My friend had a Little Gem Salad, and I had a Spring Vegetable Salad. We shared a wild mushroom and prosciutto pizza with poached egg. Yum! We like the music, ambience, food, and service. The building and grounds are very impressive."
