Diner Reviews
  • "In addition to their famous bacon cheddar biscuits, I had an amazing English Pea agnolotti dish. The agnolotti were stuffed with fresh pea puree and then put on a bed of pea puree and fresh peas. Fresh pea leaves were added as a green and pea pods were sliced down the center so the peas remained perfectly in the fresh pods. Awesome dish. The service was also fabulous. The only downside is that their win selection is very expensive."

  • "Haven't had such special food in a while. Exquisite and a little different in the spices used. Cocktails were fantastic, too. Only (minor) criticism - some of the items had tiny portions, particularly the dessert, which was very tasty, but only about one inch in diameter of parfait. Other portions were generous though - biscuits, olives, pizza. Definitely a good place for a special occasion. Didn't sit in the bar area but loved the ambiance - very dark and classy."

  • "I had a sidecar, oysters on the half shell, spring vegetable salad, mushroom pizza with prosciutto and poached egg, and ice cream for dessert (vanilla and salted pistachio). Yum!"

  • "The appetizers took 40 minutes to arrive. No bread or anything to nibble on, except a tepid shot glass of bland consome. Our main course was taking so long that the waiter came to tell us that our dinners were being plated "as we speak". It took another 25 minutes for our plates to arrive. I had to request salt twice and then they tried to take it away midway through the meal. I initially made reservations for 6pm, but asked a week ahead to change to 7 or 7:30. They refused. We saw several tables empty at 7pm, and still not occupied when we left. The food was good but not enough to make up for bad service and an arrogant management approach. We will not be going back!"

  • "Our server was amazing and so helpful. We have been looking forward to going on Sunday for fried chicken for awhile. We just needed a special occasion. My birthday came around and we decided to go for it. The fried chicken was fantastic! We sat outside and brought our daughter (who is 1). I would not say they are kid friendly when dining inside but outside was perfect and our server made us feel very comfortable and taken care of! We will definitely be back."

  • "From the very swank mixology bar to the antique modern decor, the service and presentation of our drinks and meal were amazing. Truly a high quality, well thought out restaurant & bar concept in an otherwise touristy neighborhood."

  • "Ambiance is excellent, food was good (not great). Service was horrible. Had a reservation, was not seated until 45 minutes after our reserved spot. Took an hour for appetizers to come, service overall was extremely slow. Food was not worth the extensive wait."

  • "Arrived 10 min early for our reserveration and wasn't seated for 40 min. waited another 20 min for water and menus! It was all down hill from there. The restaurant catered to the large parties and the couples were left to fend for themselves, the only things that saved the dinner was my dinner companion and the caramel seasalt pudding. Over rated and not worth the $$$."

  • "We had really high expectations for our 1833 experience as it is one of the most expensive restaurants in the area and it seems to always be fully booked. The atmosphere is nice. Plenty of space. The server was very knowledgeable, but didn't check often enough or take enough time at the table. Everyone ordered salads at the table. One salad arrived 15 min. ahead of the others. They also shorted us 1 appetizer. Again 2 appetizers arrived - 15 min. later 1 more - and then we had to ask for the last. Unacceptable for even an entry level restaurant. Very noisy. Don't expect to have a good conversation across the table. Food was acceptable, but not anything that i would remember. I will not go again - better options in the city."

  • "Romantic and charming restaurant where the chef knows what he/she is doing! But sitting through an entire course (2 actually) without ever seeing our waiter again left me with a poor impression of the overall experience. Literally had to flag down a busboy to get the waiter so I could order a glass of wine. The "oh, sorry about that" when I mentioned it didn't help much. Maybe it's just this one waiter but it was also my one experience so don't think I will be back."

  • "We dined at 1833 on fried chicken night. The fried chicken was ultimately very good, although it arrived undercooked and had to be sent back. to the kitchen. The portion was super generous. We couldn't take our leftovers with us because we were staying at a hotel. The bacon cheese biscuits were exceptional. The macaroni and cheese was nicely flavored, although almost too heavy and saucy. The mashed potatoes were also very good but heavy. The brussels sprouts were excellent. The mini banana cream pies were delicious, and I'm a banana cream pie lover. The atmospere was special, elegant, and calming. I would return if I lived nearby."

  • "We had never visited 1833 and were very pleased with our discovery. We enjoyed perfectly prepared food including artichoke soup with Greek yogurt and Fort Bragg petrale sole. Some gems are hidden on the wine list, including a 2004 El Molino Pinot Noir for $110, which we enjoyed. The multiple dining rooms create an ambiance akin to dining in a private home, complete with comfortable stuffed chairs."

  • "A friend of mine took me here for my birthday and we loved the food and enjoyed our experience. We started off with the tiny bites biscuit and oysters then I had the Parmesan crusted chicken and my friend had the gnocchi with lamb. Super delicious! When they brought out the dessert, it said happy birthday in chocolate and had a candle on top. That was a nice touch. The only negative thing about our experience is it was a little too dark. We had a yard time reading the menu."

  • "Restaurant 1833 is always an adventure. The menu is constantly changing; but it is always inventive and fresh. The building itself is a beautiful old place, and the ambiance is very compelling. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable. They make the experience of dining memorable. From the front desk to the floor, everyone I have ever encountered in Restaurant 1833 are consummate professionals."

  • "This is a great restaurant because there is always something new to try. This time we did the 5 course price fix dinner and each course was great. The bar also serves fantastic drinks, which are a lot of fun. I would recommend 1833 for any occasion."

  • "We are locals and had a great dinner on Wednesday night and confirmed the recent change of chef with our server. The tastes were interesting and good. This chef shows a much more creative use of ingredients. Our server was very ccommodating. We will, indeed, be back."

  • "My girlfriend and I were spending our 6 year anniversary together and from the minute we walked up we fell in love with the restaurant. We were walked over to our table upstairs and the whole place seemed extremely classy, clean, fit and lively. I was expecting to have a very good dinner but no where near this good. We ordered the cheddar bacon biscuits, crispy oysters, potatoes, grilled asparagus and bone in rib eye for two( absolutely to die for). There was not a single plate that let us down, and on top of that, the service provided by Alex was top notch as well. We were explained in detail whatever items we had questions on and he had made some very good suggestions to us."

  • "1833 was the perfect choice for our dinner date while visiting Monterey. It took us out of the touristy area and into the historic district. It is a beautiful and interesting home with very unique decor. We loved our bacon & cheddar biscuits to start and the mac & cheese & cheese was a great addition to our entrees."

  • "I can only review the Chicken Feast - which is only offered every Sunday at 1833, but I have to think based on this experience that any meal at this place would be a real treat. Excellent service - no one missed a beat. Really unusual cocktails, so try something different, part of the experience. Must haves - Bacon Cheddar Biscuits are legendary - you only get two - but there is SO MUCH FOOD you won't need more than one, but you will want more than one. Chicken was nicely cooked and dinner for two were 10+ pieces - we had to take it home - couldn't eat all of that - best mashed potatoes and the bacon gravy (is there a trend here?) wow - best I've ever had. Please find a way to visit this restaurant. You will love it."

  • "This restaurant was one of the highlights of our trip to Monterey. Great drinks in the bar beforehand, wonderful food (the chicken liver pate small bite was amazing) and first rate service. Everyone was very nice, they went above and beyond with service, and the ambiance was lovely. Just a marvelous experience from beginning to end."

  • "We had eaten here twice before, but the name and ownership has changed since our previous visits. It's better in every way except noise level, which is higher because of more customers. Food was excellently prepared and quite innovative. Service was amazingly good for a large multi-level restaurant. Our waiter shared his extensive knowledge of the cuisine and even recommended a dish at another restaurant not far away. All in all, we had a great anniversary dinner and will return."

  • "were we the wrong sex, age? reservation on open table, were shown to a dark table with dirty glassware above bar after the maitre de/ waiter shared the "wink , smile" "table 72? why yes, that'll do". food excellent, waiter wonderful, salvaged the evening when asked if we'd be ignored in remote seating. asst mgr responded to email after evening "no, no dirty glassware on the table" at table 72. was he there? he also said 72 was "a more desirable area of the restaurant"yes, if a dark, uncleaned nook in siberia is desirable..how unprofessional, ungracious, to question the diner's issues. we have eaten here before for the food.i have never written a critical review unless food was sub-par. only management, staff sub par. sad we can't go back."

  • "The food was the low point of this visit. Service was friendly and accommodating. The martini glass was a big disappointment. Any smaller and it would be a drop of martini and for 14.50 is was a deal killer for the entire night. Don't they know they are in Monterey?"

  • "I enjoyed an excellent sidecar prepared by Brendan at my favorite seat at the bar during Social Hour. I had a great table in the dining room. My server was Andreas, and I enjoyed the wild mushroom and prosciutto pizza with parmesan, soft poached egg, and sage. Yum! The ambience is excellent, and I enjoy listening to the music they play, including Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald."

  • "I have been to 1833 a number of times for business and have never been disappointed. I finally had an opportunity to take my wife and the food and overall experience were just as good, if not better. The ever changing menu ensures that no matter how many times you go, you will always find something new and you can be assured that it will meet or exceed the most demanding palate. Both the food and drink menus are creative, fresh and fun. Try the Penicillin #1 - you won't regret it."

  • "The ambience was nice and the food was a good. A great place for a quiet intimate diner, and that was we were looking for. The server was very knowledgable and experienced.. I believe his name was Phillipe, he accentuated our experience and we enjoyed the Absinthe "show" he presented. I would recommend this establishment to anyone :)"

  • "Wonderful location, historic old adobe house renovated with attention to prior histories, specific rooms with interesting backgrounds, preserved and explained in colorful style. The food was superb and the most knowledgable waiter we've ever encountered; he could explain every food choice in minute detail. Think his name was Andrais; great guy, very charming and utterly devoted to his cuisine."

  • "We brought 11 to Fried Chicken Sunday! Had a beautiful table with lots of room and excellent service. The fried chicken served on silver platters family style was outstanding and very bad for us! The children weren't too thrilled with the bean salad, but the adults thought it tasty and unique. We missed the deviled egg appetizer, but the ham and cheese sandwich tidbits were good. Bread or cornbread would have been a nice addition to the meal. My son-in-law tried the Absinthe cocktail and we were fascinated to watch the presentation. Unfortunately, we didn't see the ghost, but we keep hoping! 1833 is such a charming building and the new decor is beautiful."
