1833Excellent Celebratory MealThis was our second visit to 1833 and we were celebrating our son's graduation from UC Santa Cruz. Our son is a serious cook and we wanted to take him someplace special where he had never been. We were seated in one of the upstairs dining rooms which was wonderfully quiet. The staff was very attentive and when we asked for some advice from the Sommelier, he was an incredible source of information. We each started with one of their wonderful cocktails and dined family style, sharing several of the small bites, an appetizer, a pasta, and two entrees among the three of us. It was just the right amount of food and we enjoyed each and every dish. Dessert was delicious too!6/15/2013 12:00:00 AMdon't miss the truffled chicken.don't miss the truffled chicken. astonishing! really excellent food, innovative, interesting, delicious.6/15/2013 12:00:00 AMa gem in old MontereyI loved the ambience in the old house that gives this restaurant its name. The dining area was really nice and very comfortable, but I kind of wish I had come to sit in the bar, which was fantastic. The outdoor space was hopping too on the warm Saturday evening that we visited. House barrel-aged negronis were a great start, and the food did not disappoint. The chef is inventive, but doesn't fail to hit the mark with some dishes that will be familiar and appreciated by everyone. The absinthe cart (and option for a heated absinthe vapor hit) seemed a bit kitschy and out of place in the dining room at least, though it likely provides a lot of entertainment for some groups.6/15/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat FoodI love this place because they have great food and great bartenders that actually know how to make high quality drinks. My favorite bartender is Mike who is not even considered a bartender but more of a mixologist who makes the best drinks I have had in my life. I would definitely come back just for the drinks and food itself. The ambiance was nice, love the Gatsby style decor.6/14/2013 12:00:00 AMWorld Class CuisineI had an excellent dinner at 1833. I was served by the attentive Brian. I ordered the Hamachi appetizer, the bacon cheddar biscuits, the sparkling water from Norway, and the duck entree. For drinks, I ordered a sidecar and a glass of Syrah. For dessert, I had berries with vanilla and chocolate ice cream. I received an excellent table with large comfortable chairs. The ambience is very nice, with much attention to detail.6/14/2013 12:00:00 AMMade His Birthday! We had a wonderful time here! It was my boyfriend's birthday and they made it really special. They let me come in before opening and drop off a cake for him. Then they worked with me to surprise him after dinner. They were so helpful and sweet. Not to mention they have the best food in the area. And they know how to make their drinks! They make drinks the old good way. Best bartenders in town. I will come back here any day!6/13/2013 12:00:00 AMAmazingEverything from food to ambiance to service was simply amazing. Love this place!6/8/2013 12:00:00 AMBest Restaraunt in MontereyWe had the most amazing experience at 1833. It was truly a dining experience. Can't wait to come back!6/8/2013 12:00:00 AMFood was outstanding. ServiceFood was outstanding. Service was attentive but curt.6/8/2013 12:00:00 AMMy favorite place in the areaMy favorite place in the area so far. The service has been excellent every time I've gone.6/7/2013 12:00:00 AMBeautiful restaurant withBeautiful restaurant with great food, fun bars, and perfect atmosphere for any occasion. There are both small plates and full entrees. Highlights included crispy pork belly on top of cornbread with green tomatoes and the best soy glazed quail ever. Unique drink list as well, although it is a little expensive. There's also a gorgeous marble bar where they serve absinthe. Outdoor fire pits make for a fun lounging area to have some drinks with friends. Bonus is that they are open late on Friday and Saturday night, which is a rarity in Monterey.6/6/2013 12:00:00 AMMaggie love Restaurant 1833Their service is wonderful...attentive without hovering. I love 1833.6/2/2013 12:00:00 AMAbsolutely amazing! One ofAbsolutely amazing! One of the best meals - start to finish - I've had in a long time!6/2/2013 12:00:00 AMStill as good as ever...This may have been perhaps my fifth visit to 1833 and still it is among the best places to have a memorable dining experience in all of Monterey county.5/25/2013 12:00:00 AMOverall a very good experience.Overall a very good experience. Felt slightly rushed by staff. Also, noise level was a bit high so that conversation was difficult and some parts of restaurant were under lit. I saw one couple at a table trying to read their menus and were obviously having difficult. Our table was near a window so the street lighting helped.
Food was excellent and presentation was artistic.5/25/2013 12:00:00 AMwe were given this recommendationwe were given this recommendation from some friends, and had a wonderful time. The bar is very cool and eccentric I would say. funky and unique. The menu was filled with so many delicious dishes that it was hard to decide. We had a few small bites, entrees and 2 desserts and they were all wonderful! the service was great! i would highly recommend.5/25/2013 12:00:00 AM1833 has come into its own! This is our third or fourth visit. I must tell you 1833 has matured and is probably now working its way into our top 3 favorite dinner places in the area. Every bite of our meal was outstanding. The Gnocchi with morels, croutons, fava beans and pickled ramps was delightful. The Parmesan crusted chicken with salsify (one of my new favorite veggies) was lovely and the bacon wrapped pork loin with polenta was unforgettable. As was the side of asparagus. We ended the meal with a perfect chocolate mousse tart and chocolate ice cream. Yum!5/24/2013 12:00:00 AMThe food was delicious. TheThe food was delicious. The presentation was wonderful. It was very comfortable and elegant.5/18/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat Fancy Fun Date NightI have been to this establishment multiple times with my girlfriend, and we have never been disappointed. The staff is helpful and handsome, and always able to recommend foods or point out the flavors of the dishes. The food is filling and well arranged. After an appetizer of the bacon cheddar biscuits, an entre of the pan seared duck breast, and a dessert of baked alaska, I was stuffed. The fillingness of the food, however, is paired with the variety of flavors. The chefs who prepare and arrange the meals know how to combine flavors and serving sizes so that each part of a meal works together to fill you. I would strongly recommend 1833 for anyone interested in a tasteful, and tasty, date night.5/18/2013 12:00:00 AMSo goodWe went here for Mothers Day brunch. We shared several small plates. Everything was very good. The fried chicken with waffles was the best! I liked the comfort of the place in general. Good location for us too.5/12/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat Mother's Day BrunchIntriguing decor and layout, wonderful service and great food. The special ala carte brunch menu was creative and the dishes we had were superb. I would definately go back for their usual dinner service.5/12/2013 12:00:00 AMWonderful! We've been to 1833 a few times and have never been dissappointed! The food is phenominal and different every time we go. They have a very good wine list, and a wonderful atmosphere that includes not only history of the building, but also of Monterey. We have had the same server the last two occasions. He has been great both times, but this time we got to see his humorus side. He is quite a kick! We will go back again!5/12/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat farm-to-table restaurant! The food is fantastic and the wine and drinks are even better. One member of our party tried the absinthe service which was an event, in and of itself.5/10/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat food....sub par bar serviceWe have eaten at 1833 several times. Each time, including this occasion, the food and service once seated is exceptional. However, we arrived 25 minutes early to enjoy a drink and relax outside near the open fire pits...which create a nice atmosphere. I checked in our dinner party of five and asked for drink service outside which I was assured they would be right with us. We waited ten minutes before one of the staff looked out and realized we had no service. When the server came, she was not very helpful...just wanted to take our order and turn it in. We then waited another five minutes for our drinks, during which time another waiter came out and asked to take our order...not realizing it had already been placed.5/10/2013 12:00:00 AMExtremely well prepared andExtremely well prepared and presented seasonal food with an excellent wait staff and creative cuisine5/9/2013 12:00:00 AMBest in areaWe had a birthday dinner with a party of 8, were given a private room and Brian, who is an exceptional waiter and made this a perfect evening including providing many laughs and trivia notes. Food was all tasty and well prepared. VG wine list too.5/4/2013 12:00:00 AMMemorable anniversary! My girlfriend and I visited 1833 to celebrate our one year anniversary and from the moment we walked up to the front door, the staff of 1833 made us feel welcome. There were two gentlemen at the door who greeted us with smiles and held the door open for us, and once we were seated we were immediately asked what kind of water we would like. Our waiter was nothing short of spectacular, from recommending starters and drinks to asking and congratulating us about our special event. We even got a sweet 'Happy Anniversary' note on our dessert plates! There is not a single thing I can complain about, and we will definitely be visiting 1833 again very soon!5/4/2013 12:00:00 AMAnniversary DinnerWhen I made reservations, I noted that it was our anniversary. Nobody mentioned anything when we came in but we felt like we were given great consideration! We were seated at a fairly private table at the end of the balcony. We could hear the bar below which we enjoyed but had no issue hearing each other. Between our appetizer and entrees, "compliments of the chef" we had a strawberry gazpacho. Beautiful and delicious. I had the duck breast; my husband the pork loin. Every bite was surprisingly delicious! As if I had forgotten how good it was from the previous bite. Then we had dessert. I got the absinthe, which I had only heard about - Fantastic. My husband got Bourbon Pudding with "Happy Anniversary" written in chocolate. They did know!5/4/2013 12:00:00 AMLove the atmosphere and foodThis is a one-of-a-kind restaurant. I absolutely love the vintage, haunting decor. Service is wonderful, and they were nothing but accommodating to my gluten/dairy food sensitivities. I totally understand what it's like since I used to cook in restaurants in my former grain/dairy eating days. Rib-eye was AWESOME!.Service were very well-informed of the menu and ingredients, and they actually know what gluten is. :) Loved our experience so much, we came here twice on our 2 day getaway from the Bay Area.4/29/2013 12:00:00 AMWonderful experience. TheWonderful experience. The food was amazing, they accommodated my celiac disease preparing everything we ordered gluten free. We had an a fun absinthe experience and then moved into the bar for great music with a DJ. A very special restaurant.4/27/2013 12:00:00 AMWe had an amazing meal here.We had an amazing meal here. Beautiful place, delicious food, and great service.4/27/2013 12:00:00 AMI Would Definitely Return!!Our experience at at 1833 was excellent. For starters, the building & the decor are beautiful. This space has a great design team behind it with a great eye. Then the service kicked in and we were treated very well from the person who greeted us to our servers to the person who showed us out the door. Our meals were no exception as we all enjoyed something different & unique but delicious & sophisticated. No wonder this is a hot spot..they have everything covered.4/27/2013 12:00:00 AMSecond timeUsually I am disappointing the second time to a restaurant, but not at 1833. The food and drinks are great.4/27/2013 12:00:00 AMFun! Great food. AttentiveFun! Great food. Attentive service. DJ started up at 10:00 so it was a little loud but that didn't bother us. Overall outstanding.4/20/2013 12:00:00 AM14th anniversary and was not14th anniversary and was not disappointed. Food was an adventure at every turn - the wine was downright spectacular and the mixed drinks are not to be missed. Be bold and go with bartenders choice.4/16/2013 12:00:00 AMGreat food, outstanding service,Great food, outstanding service, neat building and decorations but we were seated on the balcony right above the bar and it was soooo noisy! People were have an awesome time which is great but it made it hard for us to have a conversation4/14/2013 12:00:00 AMLovely food, lovely staff,Lovely food, lovely staff, amazing ambiance and such a beautiful location! I will definitely be back!4/13/2013 12:00:00 AMExcellent ExperienceOverall great experience, would recommend to friends & family. Service was friendly, food was amazing.4/12/2013 12:00:00 AMA perfect evening.Awesome, Awesome, Awesome. I wished I remembered our servers name, but he was a true pro. We had the marrow bones, the hamachi and the tartar to start. The wild mushroom with soft poached egg pizza was our "pasta" course (they were sold out of the gnocchi w wild boar ragu) and then we were dazzled with the salt crusted dorado and their truffled whole chicken.
We really had a fantastic dinner and a wonderful experience. I have recommended to others already and would go back in a heart beat.4/12/2013 12:00:00 AMThe bar is great fun to enjoyThe bar is great fun to enjoy one of their Creative Cocktails while waiting to be seated. Order their Bacon-Cheddar biscuits with the Maple-Chipotle butter-- amazing (and I don't even like biscuits.) The menu changes, but if they have the Branzini fish, then get it. Layers and layers of flavors like tamarind gastriqe and wasabi foam. Great wine list and good wines by the glass. Enjoyed the Baked Alaska. Be sure to get reservations as this place is hopping and busy. This summer, I look forward to reserving a terrace area to sit by the fire pit and nosh on apps and cocktails. Will return, for sure.4/6/2013 12:00:00 AMI fell upon 1833 accidentallyI fell upon 1833 accidentally and stopped to go in. The manager immediately took me on a tour of this history filled setting. That was when it first opened and I have been visiting ever since. We sat at the bar this time and had dinner. It was Saturday night and very lively. The service including the hostess was great and so was the food. Love this place!!4/6/2013 12:00:00 AMStandout in a food-poor townIn a town not known for food, the care and attention stand out. The house vibe seems to favor sweet-- noticeable in the cocktails-- whereas I'm a savory girl. I was unimpressed with the salads; however, the gnocchi was exceptional. A vivacious night place-- if you're in Monterey, highly recommended.
On another note, what is it with Monterey-Carmel? I remain unimpressed with the poor food quality. This despite surrounding dairies, farms, etc. Good food here should be easy to find. It was all meh compared with the Central Coast (eg Full of life in Alamos). You guys can do better.4/4/2013 12:00:00 AMFried Chicken SundayA group of us went for the Sunday fried chicken dinner. Everything was pretty excellent.
It's a little too noisy for a large group and my only complaint was that we weren't seated at a round table because we really couldn't hear anyone except the persons right next to us. The mashed potatoes while tasty are kind of oddly runny looking which was just a little off-putting but overall we liked everything. It's a good thing they didn't bring more than one deviled egg per person because we would have gobbled them down. I always love the Penicillin #2 and probably should not have ordered the 2nd one . .
We'll likely make this a regular event as long as they keep doing the chicken dinner Sundays.3/31/2013 12:00:00 AMThis is the second time weThis is the second time we have eaten here. This time we ordered the tasting menu. We had all the choices. Everything was fabulous except the steak which was a bit ordinary though the polenta and chard sides were great.
The service has been energetic but not overbearing in any way.
We will be back.3/27/2013 12:00:00 AMFried chicken Sunday is amazing.Fried chicken Sunday is amazing. Very indulgent, but worth it. It takes fried chicken to another level.3/24/2013 12:00:00 AMWhenever we are in Monterey,Whenever we are in Monterey, we dine at 1833. This was our first visit for the Sunday night Fried Chicken Dinner, and we were not disappointed! Some of the best fried chicken I've devoured... and really generous portions. We will now rearrange our schedule to be in Monterey on Sundays!3/24/2013 12:00:00 AMHope to return soon ...Went for the Sunday Fried Chicken and was not disappointed. We ordered off of the ala carte menu since the other diner with me was not a fried chicken fan. She was totally pleased with her pasta and salad. A very enjoyable evening at this fine, but unpretentious, restaurant.3/24/2013 12:00:00 AM
