Diner Reviews
  • "You need to eat here immediately. Not only is the food delicious, the servers were also super helpful, knowledgeable and went above and beyond to make our experience one to remember. Thanks!"

  • "My friend and I greatly enjoyed the special 4th of July afternoon buffet-style BBQ at 1833 with live music. We sat at the bar, where Biggie and Avi served us. We both enjoyed Biggie's special rum punch, and I enjoyed Avi's sidecar. The menu was impressive: bacon and cheddar biscuits with maple chile butter; deviled eggs; chilled golden gazpacho shooters; chilled watermelon and mint; pole bean and fingerling potato salad with mustard vinaigrette and sieved egg; herb marinated heirloom tomatoes with peaches and burrata; charred sweet corn on the cob with basil butter, espelette, and sea salt; baked butter beans; cornbread; fried chicken; smoked and pulled pork shoulder; sweet rolls; banana creme pies; and strawberry shortcake trifle. Yum!"

  • "We had a mishap with our entres not arriving at the same time but the wait staff and manager were very responsive and remedy the mishap in a very satisfactory fashion. Great job!!!!"

  • "My wife and I enjoyed a fine dinner on our anniversary on Friday night. The waiter was fantastic and did a fine job of describing each dish. I would say that the appetizers outshine the entrées and the avocado appetizer and shrimp appetizer were fantastic. Made the mistake of ordering the chicken which was just okay while my wife's salmon dish was much better."

  • "This restaurant was recommended to us by a friend. My wife and I were very pleased with the food and service. The ambience is charming and lives up to the description on the website. We didn't see a deceased resident but it would have been fun. We highly recommend this restaurant."

  • "The best restaurant in Monterey. I dined at the other popular locations and this is in a league of their own."

  • "The food was good, but not as great as we had come to expect during our visit to northern California. The menu online looked appealing. However we learned that the menu changes daily. I didn't find an appetizer that appealed to me and only one entree was of interest. The food fell short of the layers of flavor we had enjoyed elsewhere. I had the sense that we were in the hands of an ambitious but unpolished chef. The complimentary coconut chile beverage was awful. The room we were in was lovely with window walls covered by greenery. The other rooms were equally charming. Our server seemed judgemental of our choices and falsely enthusiastic over dessert he later admitted he had not served to anyone previously. Deserves a second chance."

  • "Our server was one of the best I've had. Knew the menu and wines down to the details. Very friendly, yet not chummy and very professional yet not condescending. The menu was imaginative and cutting edge without being over the top. It was obvious that the chef was passionate about his cuisine. We dined early in the evening, and enjoyed the downstairs room almost to ourselves - I can only hope the service and cuisine are as enjoyable during peak hours, but it was very noteworthy for the right reasons. One minor complaint... the furniture, particularly the light colored chairs... was filthy! Fortunately this was quickly forgotten with brilliant service and cuisine."

  • "We have taken out-of-town guests here twice. Each time, the food was exemplary, creative and well-executed. The ambience is perfect for conversation, with a quiet buzz in the background. Thank you, 1833, for another great dining experience."

  • "My colleague and I enjoyed "The Experience," which is a spectacular multi-course dinner. Our server was Whitney, and we had a great table in the main dining room. After the amuse bouche of watermelon soup, the first course was a bacon cheddar biscuit with maple butter. Next was an excellent dish of raw oysters on the half shell, followed by the heirloom tomato salad with stone fruit and burrata (a delightful summertime tradition at 1833). Then came the comte ravioli, followed by the steak with spinach. Dessert was the last course. I had a chocolate dessert with milk ice cream, and my colleague had the bourbon pudding. We also enjoyed the drinks. I had a sidecar, and my colleague had a Commander in Chief and a Suspicious Minds. Yum!"

  • "Great food and staff. Friendliness and hospitality sets a mood where even the patrons can't help but smile at each other. Awesome!"

  • "Brought my wife To 1833 to celebrate her birthday. The food and service were outstanding. We had the five course dinner. The flavors of the different servings both my wife and i truly enjoyed. I am very picky on cleanliness and quality. I was not disappointed. I own a professional kitchen at home and enjoy cooking, the restaurant met all my expectations."

  • "Overpriced and overrated. Food was precious and left us hungry."
    Dined on 6/23/2014
  • "Very fresh, high-quality ingredients - portion size moderate, so you can try many things. Every dish was excellent except the hangar steak, which was a bit tough. Menu is small, so fussy eaters may want to review it before coming in. Everyone else will be quite happy."

  • "I was in Monterey with my wife just for that night. We've looked out on foursquare and made the reservation. Everything was awesome. The ambient, the music, the drinks, the bartender and the food. OMG the food! If you ever go to Monterey, think about the aquarium and the 1833."

  • "We have had a full meal with appetizers, entrees, dessert and Absinthe and we have had just drinks and appetizers . We have had pizza here and little else and each time the food has been outstanding. It's my favorite restaurant in Monterey and I look forward to returning."

  • "Found this place last minute and loved it! Tucked away in a cute area not too far from the water. Great food and great service!"

  • "It was not what I expected. I had a pork dish, and the pork was a little too pink, i wanted to change broccolini for spinach and I got it 10 minutes after the main dish."

  • "If you're looking for ambiance and you're a foodie - this is the place for you! 1833 is elegant, full of character, and the food does not disappoint. We did have a couple issues with the service and the bill, which left us feeling short of the full experience, but again the food and ambiance is worth a try."

  • "Very cool venue in an old adobe with multiple dining rooms and bars. The service was flawless and the food creative and well prepared. Try the "Russian Style" absinthe after your meal...definitely unforgettable."

  • "1833 - one of the top places I have been to in my life. It does not get much better than this. The physical building is remarkable and historical. The menu is manageable and does not necessarily inspire. Do not be fooled! The food is sublime. Every dish in our party of six was outstanding filled with exquisite flavors. The truffle chicken was word he one hour wait. Move time for appetizers, cocktails and conversation. The doctors special dessert was remarkable in variety and presentation. GO NOW!!! "

  • "Our hotel concierge recommended 1833 as being on par with the Sardine Factory. We were less than impressed with the selection, flavor and value. "

  • "My boyfriend and I absolutely loved our meal here. The food, service, and atmosphere were all fantastic. I would highly recommend a visit and trying a cocktail or two."

  • "Cooking and baking are my favorite past times, always utilizing fresh and local fare, so if we choose to dine out, it better be something as good or better than I can do in my kitchen. 1833 is one of the acceptable places to visit =) on the peninsula. I love the history, the food, the service, and ambience. A winner!"

  • "Good service and great food. A busy restaurant with many rooms and both down and upstairs. Outside gatherings add to the ambiance including the main bar which is buzzing with a younger crowd. You have to pay for biscuits (no bread is provided) which tend to be dry. Restrooms was always out of paper towels."

  • "My friend and I enjoyed social hour, where our server was Brendan. My friend had red wine, and I had a sidecar. We also had the truffle popcorn. For dinner, we had a great seat in the main dining room, where our server was Kalina. My friend had a Little Gem Salad, and I had a Spring Vegetable Salad. We shared a wild mushroom and prosciutto pizza with poached egg. Yum! We like the music, ambience, food, and service. The building and grounds are very impressive."

  • "Last Saturday was the third time we have dined at 1833. We have always liked the venue. However this time, we invited 4 others. The ambience and service was fine but the food was really lacking especially the Parmesan chicken...it was dense and dry. It was rather embarassing as we had highly recommended 1833. "

  • " the overkill on salt and several other spices smothered what would have been a quite good appetizer ( olives) and fish min course. Had the weather cooperated, the outside seating looked very desirable to try."

  • "Went for dinner with 7 firends and coleagues. Good experience overall. Monterey Wild King Salmon and Mahi Mahi were fatastic. However the service toward end was poor - we (a table of 8) were abandoned after the main dish was delivered; some side order never came."

  • "I made a reservation online to 1833 without much information about the restaurant itself. So I really was suprise when I entered this beautiful and classy restaurant in Monterey. Everything from decoration to dessert was perfect. I appreciated the attention for small details like amuse-bouche, good quality bread and fancy restrooms."

  • "We got there 10 minutes before out reservation before our guests arrived. The hostess took us up the stairs to a dungy narrow mezzanine to a booth good enough for 3 but not 4 people, the lighting was low with dark wood paneled walls. We asked to be moved to another table, it took the hostess about 5 minutes then she took us to the main dining room downstairs which had lots of windows, the table was large enough for four. We had to ask for bread and butter, which I thought should have been on the table without asking for them. The entree menu is OK not much selections. The appetizer its was OK too but nothing earth shattering. I had the wild salmon and had it medium cooked, and it was very good, it was moist and the sauce was good."

  • "I travel to the area at least once a month for business and this is one of the only places that I will repeatedly visit. It is always a good sign when the first appetizer you try makes you melt in delight. It is a good indication of what is to come in the entrees and desserts. I ALWAYS order the bacon biscuits as my starter. They are divine. Having tried several of their starters, entrees, and desserts I can honestly say that you will not be disappointed. There is a dish for everyone! The ambiance of this restaurant is amazing...to say the least. The staff has done a wonderful job to create a perfect atmosphere around the history of the house. I won't even start on the glorious wine list. I'll just say that I wish I had their cellar."

  • "Terrible service . Food was just average ... Except for the cheese biscuits starter..."

  • "We really enjoyed our dinner at this historic restaurant. Decor was appropriate for the historic period. Food was wonderful. Music was not a hit--some guitar music would have added to the old California ambiance much better than the late '40's music (which repeated after about an hour). I would highly recommend they revisit their music choices."

  • "I document this review with many mixed emotions. My husband and I traveled to Monterey with our two children for Mothers Day weekend. We reserved Restaurant 1833, because we love to try new things, and expose the children to great culinary work as well as avid history. Upon arrival - as stated in other reviews - the bar scene was bustling! (although we couldn't personally join in, bc of the kids, we still appreciated the scene.) We requested to be sat in Hatties room, of which we did. Our waiter was Douglas, whom had mixed reviews, but we were still positive. On the down swing we ordered the truffle chicken promptly upon being sat - as stated it takes 1 hour for prep - 3 hours later - we still awaited food as our little one slept. "
