A word from 1808 American Bistro
1808 American Bistro serves classic American fare with the occasional Southern and Cajun twists. Steaks grilled to order. Shrimp and Grits with a bit of a bite. A delectable array of house made sauces, vinaigrettes, remoulades, tapenades, aioli and demi-glaces. Not to mention the pastas, burgers, sandwiches, salads, appetizers and desserts, all of the mouthwatering variety.

Our full bar offers 48 cold craft beers on draft, and a delightfully tippling assortment of wines and spirits. Stop by for lunch or dinner or a beer, or any combination thereof that tickles your fancy.

Reservations recommended for the Dining Room. However, we cannot accommodate reservations for the Patio and Bar.

  • "Just moved to Columbus and wanted to check out Delaware...easy drive and cute, historic town. Downtown parking is a little tight, but we got lucky. The restaurant bar was full of energy (6pm Friday). The historic, high ceilings space has a cool vibe, but it is a little rough. We ordered wine by the glass, filet medallions, and short rib. The filet had a heavy sauce that I would have preferred less of, but my husband's short rib was incredible. Service was friendly, casual and attentive. Plates around $22 each...nice value for the whole experience. Next time we'll come back when it's warmer and walk around town."

Whether you are entertaining friends or just on a family outing this is the place to go. We have eaten here more than once, and our experience has always been excellent."

  • "The server was not helpful at all. I asked about drinks the martini’s had been removed from the drink list, her comment “we took those all amount six months ago”, can you still make them, “NO”, not I can see. I wanted the flavored martini, this is one reason I loved the restaurants. Everything on the menu was bourbon based. We finally ordered a drink, it came in a hurricane glass that was only two thirds full, and most good bartenders would fit the drink to the glass. The tone of the service and quality has changed drastically. My husband’s pork was dry, my tournedos of beef was about the size of a table spoon and cooked to death, the reduction was tasteless."

  • "We had to change our reservation from 5 to 6 just a few hours before our reservation and they had no problems accommodating us. The ambience in the restaurant is nice with darker lighting and rustic interior decor. The only complaint I have is that the table we got was a little wobbly and we saw they tried to fix this by placing bill folders under the legs. The food was delicious! The beignets are delicious! I haven't been to new orleans, but I imagine they taste just like that! All 6 people were happy with their meal. I like how they always have something different on their seasonal menu. The service was a little slow at first but was great over all. They gave me a free dessert since my food was brought out too early!"

  • "This was our second time dining at 1808 and it is worth the trip back to Delaware. The food was spot on. The beet salad from the seasonal menu for excellent. My husband loved the crudo hamachi tuna. Our dinner guest said the salmon was the best meal he'd had in a long time."

  • "If you haven't tried 1808 American Bistro, take a trip to downtown Delaware. Make a reservation so you don't have to wait, or be turned away. Inventive drink & food menus; our wait person quite willing to add an opinion when asked. Lots of beers and IPAs; a cocktail list with many old standards, like a Moscow Mule served in a hammered copper cup. Two food menus, one favorites, one seasonal specials, allows choices based on appetite: sandwiches, entrees, appetizers, sides, salads. The beet salad is divine! Salmon steak, beef short ribs, smoked chicken, all exceptional. No matter the choice, leave room for dessert! The beignets are better than in N'awlins! Also don't miss whiskey bread pudding or banana pudding. Thank goodness for sharing!"

  • "Great place to eat as a couple, with family or friends. This downtown hot spot requires reservations and a little extra time to find parking. That just tells you that this restaurant is in demand. Food is excellent. You will not be disappointed. We've tried beef cheek ravioli, filet mignon, pork tenderloin, bread service and chips and dip. All worth checking out!"

  • "We have been at this restaurant 3 times,the food has always been outstanding.The best calamari we've ever had in Cols and area. Even 1 of our friends with,who's not a calamari fan,liked it. From the extended beer list and good selections of bottled wine, to great apptz and soups, a perfect portion size entree. The beef cheeks are fabulous, the salmon was a bit salty for my liking but was cook to perfection (I'm particular, needs to be med/rare for me).even though the bread is xtra charge, it's worth it! My husband and I love to cook, he's an amazing cook, he's so impressed with the menu,too. Reservations are needed to sit in dining area, but if you get there early you can sit at the high tables in the bar, which is fun, too."

  • "We love the 1808 American Bistro! This was our fourth visit, and they always deliver great food, good service, and lots of ambience. My husband's steak was prepared just the way he likes it, and I enjoyed my salmon. They have an outstanding beer list, good wines by the bottle and by the glass, and some interesting cocktails. The bread service is a small extra charge and well worth it. We'll be back again and again."

  • "The food is always tasty and cooked to perfection. The servers are knowledgeable about menu selections. My husband was set on getting the fish he had a couple weeks ago but it was not on the menu. The server explained that it changes frequently as the chef gets the freshest available for that week. She made an alternate suggestion that she had sampled. Great variety of cocktails that are fun to try. Good beer selection. Overall fun place to dine."

  • "We had a delightful lunch at the 1808 American Bistro. I had eaten dinner there a couple years ago and I think that they have improved the ambiance. Everything was very nice and the service was very good. We each had a cup of seafood gumbo and a sandwich, BLT and chicken panini. We agreed that everything was great. This is a great restaurant in Delaware."

  • "The food was very good however I felt that for the price, there could have been a little bit more. Only 4 sprigs of asparagus and a medalion size piece of meat and a heaping scoop of potatoes all of which were very good but would have preferred a bit more vegetable and a bit more meat. The atmosphere was nice but geared towards groups the floor needs fixed because I was sitting on a Loose floorboard and every time someone walked by our table I bounced which was very uncomfortable."

  • "my daughter is a college student in the area we came down to see her she said this is where the students take their parents when they visit we had a great time wonderful food wait staff was very knowledgeble as we were ordering we thought the prices were a little high for a college town but we enjoyed everything goat cheese pasta filet mignon and the short ribs were all excellent we will make this our go to restaurant when we come down for special occasions well worth the trip"

  • "After reading the reviews I was excited to try this restaurant, but ended up disappointed! The bread was not crisp, instead it was so rubbery it was had to cut and the mashed potatoes tasted like instant. Also the steak was a very poor quality meat and cut too thin."

  • "Our server, Scott, was helpful with beer selections, courteous, paid attention to detail and he had 7-8 tables. He made our experience special for our Valentine's Date. Don't lose him as a server! We had a 6:30 reservation & arrived at 6:10. Three tables came in after us, two were two tops and one was a party of 6. We were told we needed to wait closer to our reservation time and the walk in parties were given 20-30 minute quote times. All three walk in parties were seated before us (one table of girls were clearly her friends) and we did not get seated until 6:47, which was at least 17 minutes after the walk in parties and after our reservation time. She then called us the wrong reservation name (we were the only reso there)."

  • "I had heard nice things about 1808, and the restaurant lived up to my expectations. The service was exceptional. Our hots d'oeuvres were an imaginative take on beer cheese and my soup, the andouille shrimp cream soup, showed the chef's mastery of cajun cuisine. The entrees were imaginative and plated well. My wife's salmon portion was generous and expertly prepared. While my wife enjoyed the ample serving of beignets and cappuccino, I resisted all temptation of desserts and enjoyed a finely brewed cup of coffee. It certainly was a nice way to finish our Valentine's Day together."

  • "We had wanted to try this restaurant since it opened and I am so glad we finally made it there. In fact, I look forward to going again. I we definitely think it is among our 10 top fav's! Food was great. Besides good food, it was an easy drive and there were some interesting antique shops to check out on our next visit. Or, a movie in the old theater across the street."

  • "1808 American Bistro is one of those place that everyone really really loves, but always forgets its there. The varied menu and house specials are usually very good but can be a bit too unique for a non-adventerous tongue. Portion size is smaller - but as you'd expect from a higher-end restaurant - when compared to other Delaware eateries. Service is usually okay to good. Attentive to get order but then disappears and limited contact with them the remainder of the meal."

  • "We went to dinner here for the first time with our friends who confessed it was third time this week. The drink were great-I had the sinner and my husband had one of their awesome beers. We shared a head of cauliflower with goat cheese, which has changed the way I look at the vegetable. I had a beet salad that was simply amazing- I mean smoked beet powder? Who does that? Then the shrimp and grits. Enough said. Delicious food, great service and all for a reasonable price."

  • "We LOVED the food. Great scallops and 72 hr brisket was fabulous. Service was good...sometimes just took a little long as it was a Saturday night...seemed like waitress might have been new. It was not bad service at all but it took them awhile to greet us and take drink orders when we sat down. Would highly recommend this restaurant!"
