Diner Reviews
  • "Went early for drinks at bar. We tried a specialty cocktail and a craft beer. Very nice. Then seated in dining area. We noticed the noise level. It was amplified twofold. Bar was much quieter, which was odd! We ordered salads and an entrée. Salads were large but delicious and very creative. Only wish we had had a chance to finish them and let them settle before entrees came. Don't like being rushed thru courses. Entrees were wonderful. I had roasted acorn squash and walnut pesto pasta. My partner had the chicken artichoke pasta. Both were incredibly flavorful and a generous portion. Loved them both. No dessert. Too full!! I'll be back and will manage my server's timing of the meal courses next time. Will make it more enjoyable that way."

  • "The food was fine. However, I thought my almond chicken salad was alittle dry. Hubby reported that his steak was good. Sister said the crab roll was good as were the fries."

  • "Exceptional food and service every time we have dined at 1808. So glad to have an upscale restaurant in Delaware. We no longer need to travel to Columbus for this. We have celebrated many special family occasions here."

  • "Very limited food items and then you were out of two things that would have been are choice that evening. Salads where the only thing appealing on the menu that evening."

  • "We drove up from Columbus to Delaware to try this restaurant, having eaten at Veritas, a sister restaurant with an emphasis on cocktails. The evening started with a very personable and knowledgable server, who easily made recommendations based on my preferences. These were spot on. The calamari was simply the best I've ever had, not chewy and served with a sauce that did not overwhelm the flavor of the meat. My main course was shrimp and grits. The house made andouille sausage was excellent and the highlight of the dish. My only complaint was a preference for the dish to be served at a physically hotter temperature. My dining partner had the short rib, which she said was excellent. We share the banana pudding for desert."

  • " I'd hoped the amazing kale salad would still be on the menu, but alas, it was not. But other salads, equally good were!. Happy to report, 1808 is kid friendly w/Crayons, coloring paper, and kids menu and amazingly speedy service kept all very happy."

  • "I had the Korean Fried Chicken and it was sooooo good! My husband had the Filet Medallions which are always a good go-to entree for us on their menu. We also started with the Summer Chopped Salad which was a nice alternative to a traditional lettuce salad. 1808 never disappoints with food."

  • "It is surprising & exciting to find such sophistication in food in this little town. Chef is New Orleans trained and his delicacies are fab. We will be back very soon again!"

  • "We both had a flank steak with a wedge salad. (No potato needed on this plate). Not only was the sous vide cooked meat tender and flavorful, but the salad matched the excellence of the steak. A surprise in the salad were two "deviled" egg halves with the most creamy, mustardy centers that substituted for the normally hard cooked eggs that are crumbled on a salad. What a great creative twist. Order this entree before they take it off the menu. You will not be disappointed. The restaurant has a very fairly priced wine list and an extensive beer list."

  • "Made a 6:30 reservation on a Friday night at the last minute. Even though we were 10 minutes late they seated us no problem. To bad we were seated next to two couples with the loud guy facing us! Our server was great, very helpful, he knew the menu and wine list and we liked the bottle he recommended. I had the halibut which was a seasonal special, delicious, though I didn't love the beet puree and I love beets. The halibut was perfectly cooked. My husband had the 42 hour ribs which he said needed more seasoning, he was wishing he'd ordered the fried chicken. We ordered the banana pudding, which was enough for 3 or 4 people. It was truly outstanding, with a cute presentation. We will come back."

  • "Went there as a party of 4 on a Saturday with reservations at 6:30 PM. The food was excellent, however I was a little disappointed due to the fact that I have a gluten allergy and was limited on the menu choices. The first entree I ordered, the waiter came back and said they were out of as was the second. Both times he came back recommended the most expensive entree on the menu that I could order. I was surprised that it being early on a Saturday evening that they were out of the entrees that I order, and that #1, the waiter didn't know they were out (both times), and #2, he came back and recommended ( same thing) something I did not want. So I just ended up ordering a side salad. The other 3 meals in our group were outstanding."

  • "Enjoyed checking out this place. Have been wanting to for quite some time but live 45 min away. It was worth the drive. Great location with plenty of parking nearby. Beautiful old historic building with lots of character. Server was prompt and perfectly attentive. An amazing craft draft beer selection was a huge surprise. And they also had some interesting homemade cocktails. The food menu was diverse and quite innovative. There was something for everyone. Preparation was spot on and the presentation was a feast for the eyes. The only criticism was that the mackerel dish was a tad dry and lacked moisture. Otherwise, I really liked this place. "

  • "On a visit for Easter with our son who attends OWU, we wanted somewhere "nice" to take him and his recommendation was 1808 American Bistro. He hit all the marks with this one! From the character of the building, to the pleasant greeting by staff at the entrance to the Manhattan cocktail to start to the meal, we knew this was going to be delicious. And it did not disappoint. He ordered the salmon and my husband and I ordered the filet medallions. Outstanding! The reduction was amazing and the flavors melded perfectly in my mouth. We topped our meal off with the highly recommended beignets and oh my! Mouthwatering deliciousness! 1808 American Bistro will definitely be on our list of stops whenever we visit OWU."

  • "As always, our experience with 1808 was an incredible one! The service is always good, the food is cooked exactly as expected/asked, and the beer list is great! All day Monday happy hour is a nice touch as well! Having moved to Delaware about 6 months ago, I think we've tried every restaurant in town, but this has proven to be our 'go-to' for a night out. We will definitely be going back, and are never disappointed with any aspect of the 1808 experience."

  • "This was the second time that my fiance and I have eaten at 1808. The first time the food was pretty good and the drinks were great. This time I ordered the pork belly which was exquisite and she ordered the shrimp and grits which was amazing! The drinks were good but the service was a little problematic. I believe it was a result of us arriving at the beginning of the dinner rush rather than overall poor performance. This place is definitely worth a visit."

  • "Just moved to Columbus and wanted to check out Delaware...easy drive and cute, historic town. Downtown parking is a little tight, but we got lucky. The restaurant bar was full of energy (6pm Friday). The historic, high ceilings space has a cool vibe, but it is a little rough. We ordered wine by the glass, filet medallions, and short rib. The filet had a heavy sauce that I would have preferred less of, but my husband's short rib was incredible. Service was friendly, casual and attentive. Plates around $22 each...nice value for the whole experience. Next time we'll come back when it's warmer and walk around town."

  • "From the vibrant bar scene with signature cocktails and 48 beers on tap to the excellent service, this is truly a great place to eat. Whether you are entertaining friends or just on a family outing this is the place to go. We have eaten here more than once, and our experience has always been excellent."

  • "The server was not helpful at all. I asked about drinks the martini’s had been removed from the drink list, her comment “we took those all amount six months ago”, can you still make them, “NO”, not I can see. I wanted the flavored martini, this is one reason I loved the restaurants. Everything on the menu was bourbon based. We finally ordered a drink, it came in a hurricane glass that was only two thirds full, and most good bartenders would fit the drink to the glass. The tone of the service and quality has changed drastically. My husband’s pork was dry, my tournedos of beef was about the size of a table spoon and cooked to death, the reduction was tasteless."

  • "We had to change our reservation from 5 to 6 just a few hours before our reservation and they had no problems accommodating us. The ambience in the restaurant is nice with darker lighting and rustic interior decor. The only complaint I have is that the table we got was a little wobbly and we saw they tried to fix this by placing bill folders under the legs. The food was delicious! The beignets are delicious! I haven't been to new orleans, but I imagine they taste just like that! All 6 people were happy with their meal. I like how they always have something different on their seasonal menu. The service was a little slow at first but was great over all. They gave me a free dessert since my food was brought out too early!"

  • "This was our second time dining at 1808 and it is worth the trip back to Delaware. The food was spot on. The beet salad from the seasonal menu for excellent. My husband loved the crudo hamachi tuna. Our dinner guest said the salmon was the best meal he'd had in a long time."

  • "If you haven't tried 1808 American Bistro, take a trip to downtown Delaware. Make a reservation so you don't have to wait, or be turned away. Inventive drink & food menus; our wait person quite willing to add an opinion when asked. Lots of beers and IPAs; a cocktail list with many old standards, like a Moscow Mule served in a hammered copper cup. Two food menus, one favorites, one seasonal specials, allows choices based on appetite: sandwiches, entrees, appetizers, sides, salads. The beet salad is divine! Salmon steak, beef short ribs, smoked chicken, all exceptional. No matter the choice, leave room for dessert! The beignets are better than in N'awlins! Also don't miss whiskey bread pudding or banana pudding. Thank goodness for sharing!"

  • "Great place to eat as a couple, with family or friends. This downtown hot spot requires reservations and a little extra time to find parking. That just tells you that this restaurant is in demand. Food is excellent. You will not be disappointed. We've tried beef cheek ravioli, filet mignon, pork tenderloin, bread service and chips and dip. All worth checking out!"

  • "We have been at this restaurant 3 times, the food has always been outstanding. The best calamari we've ever had in Cols and area. Even 1 of our friends with, who's not a calamari fan, liked it. From the extended beer list and good selections of bottled wine, to great apptz and soups, a perfect portion size entree. The beef cheeks are fabulous, the salmon was a bit salty for my liking but was cook to perfection (I'm particular, needs to be med/rare for me).even though the bread is xtra charge, it's worth it! My husband and I love to cook, he's an amazing cook, he's so impressed with the menu, too. Reservations are needed to sit in dining area, but if you get there early you can sit at the high tables in the bar, which is fun, too."
