I was charmed when a door was immediately opened for us, and we walked into a lovely, old restaurant. We were greeted by a couple of hostesses and told our table was ready. We were led upstairs and were served an amazingly good dinner. Service seemed to be perfect. It was expensive, but I think well worth it. I found only one glitch, and it is a tiny one. I had made a reservation for 2 people. Our "ready" table was set for 4. The extra place settings were, of course, immediately whisked away, but I did not get the warm, fuzzy feeling that the table had been set just for us. That being all I can complain about, I hope to return for another dinner soon.

The service here is excellent and the complementary parking is nice in Georgetown. Most of the food was really good that our table ordered. I had a few pieces of shell in my appetizer and one person said her calamari was overcooked. Otherwise the appetizers were fantastic. For mains the guys had the pork and lamb three ways and raved about both. The ladies had the halibut and sent it back. It was really chewy and seemed overdone. They made both dishes again, but it seemed to be the cuts of halibut that they were using - apparently the cuts they had received were quite densely packed. The ladies didn't end up eating the fish but cleaned their plates of everything else. 1789 didn't charge for the fish. Dessert was ok, not fantastic.

Nice little restaurant in a good neighborhood. Staff is exceptional. Warm ambiance. I gave it a 4 star because food doesn't merit the high prices. The menu is very limited and not too exciting. Expect to pay more than you want.

My wife and I went to 1789 for the first time to celebrate our first wedding anniversary, and we couldn't have possibly had a better experience. Attention to detail was the order of the day (greetings from the staff , a personalized menu, a hand-written card wishing us well). The chef prepared an absolutely amazing meal and every part of the meal was prepared perfectly and the portions were just right. Each course was full of flavor and every bite enjoyable. A perfect setting for a celebrating a special occasion to be be sure; we left feeling like it was worth every penny. Thank you for the wonderful evening and we look forward to coming back!

My wife and I had thoroughly enjoyable night at 1789. Service was just right, wine selection was pretty good as we only wanted a half bottle and the selection was limited, however the food was near perfect. Beautifully presented, usually a contemporary twist on a classic, like a coddled egg with a medley of mushrooms, scallops seared and served with a consommé of watermelon etc. this was one of our best dining experiences in North America...

We have dined at 1789 periodically over the years, and have enjoyed some wonderful meals there. This time, greeters at the door were welcoming and engaging. Service was attentive, though our main server did not once smile or attempt to make us feel welcome. His approach to his job bordered on surgical! A nice touch was the appearance of a watermelon appetizer. We all ordered different selections at our table, and generally they were deemed delicious except that the hangar steak, ordered by two of us, was well- flavored and prepared but tough and gristly. There were no other beef or lamb entrees offered on the menu, a disappointment, but perhaps because 1789 was still offering its summer special at $45. Hopefully next time will be better

We eat out a lot and it is not easy to surprise us, but this was an outstanding meal. Quaint historic setting, excellent service, and the food! creative, but not too fussy. coddled egg and mushrooms was exquisite, the gnocchi were light and in a flavorful green sauce, Icelandic cod was caramelized inn top, but not overcooked and perfectly accompanied by leeks, potatoes and lardons. Save room for dessert - peach pie with bourbon vanilla ice cream was the best!

1789 has been around for many years and it is still a premier dining spot in DC. The ambiance and setting in an old federal house converted to a restaurant provides many small side rooms and cozy spaces for a wonderful atmosphere to discuss business or have a romantic evening. The food was exceptional. It was presented beautifully and tasted divine. Every touch was perfect. Service was timing but did not overwhelm you.

My husband and I went to dinner celebrating my husband's birthday and we had a wonderful time. Outstanding service from the moment we arrived with complimentary parking to our seating and atmosphere. Loved the cozy room we had and once seated we had very knowledgeable service by several attendants. We started with a frozen watermelon appetizer that was accompanied by great tasty breads and butter with distinct flavors. We had a nice selection of wines. We ordered a Potato Gnocchi and and the Squid Ink Tagliarini for appetizers. Our main entrees were the Duck and Rockfish with Lobster farro selections. Done superbly. My husband had a complimentary Peach Pie and I had the Rocky Road Verrine for desserts. An experience to remember!

A new chef in the really old and somewhat smelly surroundings that is 1789 Restaurant was not enough to rescue a late seating dinner on a busy Saturday night. The wait staff seemed rushed, the food arrived in a hurry, the tastes were alright, nothing special and overall my companion and I simply concluded that for all its hype and reputation, 1789 reminds you of those rock legends you still go see on concert - they play the sam songs but they just aren't the same. The wine list is really nice and a very great bottle of Turley Petite Syrah was really nice. Skip this place for a while.

We were celebrating a birthday , and I wanted someplace special. Being new to the area, I wasn't sure where to go, but this looked "special". It was perfect. Some friend mentioned "stodgy," "old"-- We loved it! We loved that most men were wearing jackets, that everyone was well dressed, and that the place was busy with a "buzz" to it. The menu choices were diverse, and all of our food was very good. Service was professional and attentive. Wine list was great. All three of us took advantage of the $45 prix-fix menu. Shared cheese course with desert was perfect. I'd take 1789 over any glass, stone, metal trendy place every time.

1789 never lets me down. Just went with my husband for the $45 fix prixe summer dinner (until 9/12). Like all other occaisions everything was excellent. My husband thought the coddled egg was the best first course he had ever eaten and i loved the squid ink tagliarini. Rockfish and duck were quite good, too. (Surcharge for duck). Serice is always excellent. This a great place for a romantic dinner and to entertain family for special occaisions.

This restaurant is a perfect place to mark special occasions. I noted it was our anniversary, and 1789 presented us with menus that referenced the occasion, including our names. Terrific food; lamb is notable. Wine list runs the gamut from reasonable to pricey - your choice. Wait staff was attentive and very pleasant. Several little touches added to the mood, such as small compressed watermelon squares with jalapeno peppers served as a palate cleanser. This is a reliable place with great ambiance. Ask for one of the first floor dining rooms.

We loved everything about the restaurant. It was our favorite dining place during our 5 day stay in DC, and it wasn't the most expensive either. Great food, attentive and friendly service, rich history, and good value. Prices aren't exactly cheap, but we've seen much higher prices at other similar restaurants. This restaurant is far too large to be a true fine dining restaurant. The service is as uneven as the food. From the large number of college students milling about the door to the Tombs (the bar underneath the restaurant) to the diners in t-shirts and polo shirts, nothing about this restaurant indicates fine dining. Corduroy and Marcel's are what 1789 should be and is not. It was a profoundly disappointing dining experience.

We chose this restaurant because my grandmother was visiting and wanted something that was "white table cloth, quiet, warm ambiance, in a historical building, with great food". 1789 fulfilled all these demands. Our waiter was wonderful, atmosphere was spot on, and food was excellent. If I had to say something negative (which it's really not) is that 1789 is located in close proximity to Georgetown University, so there were large groups of college aged kids walking around. Again, that was not a significant issue! Great experience!

Must eat spot for Georgetown. Very accessible for those who appreciate the historic spots. The wine list is pretty extensive and gives a good range from the everyday Oregon varietals to the higher end (ask for the reserve list if you know what you're looking for). Your server may be knowledgeable about wines, but didn't see anyone sporting the somm pin. Best to have someone in your group who knows wines to pick for you. Servers are very personable and professional, but don't expect "napkin placed on your lap" service. The three course dinner menu option is great for a quick dinner, but won't necessarily appeal to those foodies with a really refined palette. Overall, great opportunity to catch up with a dear friend in a great venue.

  • Oversell on the new chef?

    Dined on 8/29/2014
1789 has a new chef. He wants to be the best chef in DC, according to our earnest waiter. The chef wants everyone to order at least 3 courses. Well, in our humble opinion, the chef has some work to do, and the servers should back off a bit on the oversell. The gazpacho was cold cucumber soup: not bad, but not gazpacho. The fried oysters were covered with panko (or something like it). One could only taste the breading. The rock fish was good, but could have been great had it not been so salty. (I love salt and have never complained about too much EVER.) The server was sweet and sincere, but interjected himself into our every private conversation. We will go back. But we'll hope for less hype and better food, with a little more privacy.

We were with folks we had not meet before and wanted to be able to make sure our group of 6 could hear each other without having to shout. When Anthony Lombardo was chef, 1789 was our favorite. While the new chef is ok, 1789 is now non remarkable. The menu is no longer exciting. 1789 under Anthony Lombardo was exceptional starting with the bread/biscuits with variety of butter/spreads followed by unique salad such as the brussel sprouts salad, his squid ink pasta itself was worth our 6hr drive and each main course was perfection. 1789 used to be our gold standard that we compared other restaurants to. The pastry chef also been replaced. No one in our table of 5 enjoyed their dessert, in the past the desert put the finishing touch on perfect dining experience. It is sad that Anthony Lombardo is no longer at 1789, until he returns I would not recommend 1789.
