This restaurant has more than one room for dining. Only the main dining room is light and warm. We were sat in a very dingy, unattractive spot. The food was dry and actually distasteful. The service was very attentive but that could not save our special anniversary evening.

Superb in every aspect!! I reserved a table for my wife's birthday and also ordered flowers. The table was ready upon our arrival and the flowers were absolutely perfect! A special "Happy Birthday" menu had been prepared for my wife. The dinner was exceptional - compliments to the chef. The wait staff was extremely friendly and attentive and could not possibly have done anything more to make our evening more perfect! A special birthday "cake" of strawberry shortcake and ice cream with one burning candle was served to my wife as the piece de resistance! My only regret is that the evening passed far too quickly. 1789 will continue to be our choice for celebrations of special occasions.

History, yes plenty but the service and quality of food was of an era I don't want to be part of. I hosted a business colleague here and I can cook better. I had to explain in detail how to order a simple wet martini. The food was simple, sauces weren't complex and just overall dull. The waiter was not attentive and seemed to be there when you didn't need him and hover when you asked for more time. I would never recommend this restaurant. I chose it based on history and reviews and wouldn't do that again. A high disappointment.

Very pretty place, free valet parking, menu was less interesting than under Riz LaCoste. Vegetarian dish too rich, soup not hot enuff, spartan plating seemed to lack pizazz/eye appeal - eg, dessert on a large dish with a chocolate dome on one end and a scoop of ice cream in the other and nothing in between - a drizzle of something or a strawberry would have been more appealing. Same with main course - rockfish served with skin up and not attractive, altho my husband said it was tasty. Service was paced VERY well - did not clear until all of us had finished and did not bring the main course until we were done with our appetizers. Busman did stack the dishes right by my ear with a clatter. Nice but I think DC has better.

  • The food and service at 1789
    OpenTable Diner Since 2005
    Dined on 5/24/2008
The food and service at 1789 were great. The staff was very thoughtful and made special arrangements because we were celebrating our anniversary (special menu, candle in our dessert, and card from the staff, although it said "Happy Birthday" instead of "Happy Anniversary"). The atmosphere was more stiff than I was expecting, and despite there being several open tables, we were seated intimately close to other parties. It was so close that a neighboring couple overheard everything that my husband and I were discussing and were continuously commenting on our conversations. It made the evening very awkward.

Intimate setting and pretty tables. Food portions just right and nice presentations. Warm service. We had the tasting menu with paired wines and each dish was pretty good but not outstanding. The wine pairings were interesting but not outstanding. The best item on the menu that we had was the lamb chop which was really lovely. We requested a cozy table and got one in a corner--the nicest table in the room, I thought. This was our second time eating at 1789. I think the food there the first time was a little better--maybe because we ate there on a Saturday night whereas this time we couldn't get a week-end reservation and were there on a Monday. Cost for 2 for a nice evening: $300

Everything was perfect EXCEPT the table location. They stuck us upstairs in what was a small noisy room filled with businessmen and next to a large serving station & next to a party room instead of the warm room downstairs with the fire place. You would think as our first reservation with Open Table, they would have given us a more appropriate table conducive to the experience. It was a Monday night and not busy so they could have done that.

The service at 1789 was over and above. The staff was attentive and personable. We could have been the only patrons in the restaurant. My boyfriend was not wearing a jacket (jacket required guys!) so he was given the house loaner. The staff took a potientially uncomfortable position and made us feel like we were visiting friends. I wouldn't call the food stellar, but there are some interesting things on the menu. You won't be dissapointed. We will be returning.

The tasting menu with wine pairings was delightful. I think if it had not been for the price that I would have marked everything higher. I have had equally good food for about a hundred dollars less at Nora's and Charleston's. $325 is a lot to spend for two for dinner!

I understand the new chef is trying to put his own spin on an old classic, but unfortunately he's missed the mark. Although the service is great, the food was horrible and at that price point it's definitely not worth darkening the doorway of their establishment. I won't be going back there anytime soon, nor would I recommend this restaurant to friends, that is if I want to keep them as friends.

We were somewhat disappointed with our dining experience at 1789. Perhaps our expectations were too high. The food was good, but not memorable, with the exception of the lamb chops, which were wonderful. 1789 was rated the most romantic restaurant in Washington DC by Fodor's. We found nothing romantic about it.
