Diner Reviews
  • "1789 is a classic gem of fine dining. The ambiance, service, and deliciousness are top notch. Perfect for celebratory dinners."

  • "1789 is one of my favorite restaurants, for the ambience & the food, but this last visit left me very disappointed. I had the Branzini fish entrée. The fish was very dry & tasteless with no seasoning or sauce. It came with a mushroom puree. It was good but not much basically, just a design on the plate. More mushrooms in the roaasted corn side would have been better . I do not like spicy foods at all, so I am not suggesting adding peppers to flavor it, but some herbs, butter, lemon would have helped give the fish more flavor & cooked for less time, so it would have made it more moist. Some nice creamy garlic mashed potaoes would have been a nice addition."

  • "After three trips to the Inn at (Little) Washington, Virginia, we tried 1789 for an anniversary dinner. We were pleasantly surprised at how favorably 1789 compares. If you are tired of the noisy, crowded, garish, "latest thing" restaurants in downtown D.C., and you want a place to enjoy a quiet, reserved dinner, 1789 is an excellent choice."

  • "1789 was wonderful! Excellent food, wine, and service! I had asked for a booth or banquette ibecause we brought our 2 1/2 year old granddaughter; they had one by a wall w many pictures that kept our grsnddaughter entertained. The staff were wonderful with her."

  • "Let me start by saying that I was pleased with the service from the moment I arrived at the restaurant to the moment I left the restaurant. The interior is true to a rustic and very 1789ish style, but with upscale, white tablecloth table settings. Because this is supposed to be a four-star restaurant, the bar is raised. While the food was very good, I thought the combination of textures ill fitting. I also was bored with each of the three courses by the time I had eaten half of the course. There was not enough interesting combinations of flavors and textures to hold my interest. Again, if the price tag hadn't been as high, I wouldn't have been as picky."

  • "I always go for their summer special, as otherwise it's just too pricey. But it's always a consistently excellent meal."
    Dined on 8/12/2014
  • "The food was amazing as was the service and the ambience. We chose to go to 1789 even though they weren't participating in restaurant week and we were so glad we did. They had a great summer special that was even better!"

  • "We had a wonderful dinner there on a Sunday night. The food was exceptional and expertly prepared; the staff was very attentive; and the ambiance was classy and I enjoyed the dining room we were assigned - it was somewhat tight, but I really did not notice my fellow diners and the noise level allowed for an ease of conversation."

  • "A great place to have a quiet celebration - the food, service, ambience is always top notch!!"

  • "Everything was beyond great except for unforgivable limited choice of wines by the glass. Is it that hard to have a second choice of Chardonnay? No excuse for this. With the high menu prices it's hard to understand why we need to buy two bottles to get quality as one diner drinks red and the other white wine."

  • "...but it became one. In the many years since our last dinner at 1789, it has lost the stuffy feel, leaving unmarred quality and class. Pressed watermelon and candied jalapeno - possibly best amuse-bouche ever. Green gazpacho creamy and flavorful, elegant smoked salmon. I had lovely rockfish, my husband had the vegetarian "marrow." Here is a lesson to chefs everywhere on how to feed vegetarians with creativity and style. Service was simply impeccable. We applaud the local sourcing, including Virginia wines. Only quibbles? Closely spaced seating, and they put shellfish and/or meat on many fish or veg dishes. When will this end? I imagine they would have accommodated a request to omit them, but you don't know till you ask (we didn't)."

  • "A restaurant with good food, attentive service, and a quiet atmosphere is hard to find. No wonder 1789 continues to draw diners."

  • "We had a terrific meal and experience here...this is what 5-star dining is all about. Very welcoming staff and attentive to our needs. And the food is so good you may not want to share a bite with your dining partner."

  • "We took our Australian visitor here for dinner and she enjoyed the evening a lot! No rushing, attentive service, delicious food all contributed to a lovely evening!"

  • "Your peach dessert and the zucchini bread were outstanding. Your scallops were the best that I've ever eaten. Our birthday guest was quite pleased with your restaurant."

  • "Food and service were fantastic from the first course to the desert and from the wait staff to the valets. The American history décor, if that is your thing, added to a very special dining experience. Not inexpensive but worth the money."

  • "We had a wonderful dinner here to celebrate our wedding anniversary. I had flowers delivered to the restaurant that afternoon and they were already on our table when we walked in. We were wished a Happy Anniversary as soon as we arrived. The pace of the meal was perfect, a great variety of dishes on the menu, and expertly prepared and served. I would highly recommend this fabulous restaurant!"

  • "We had a wonderful dinner for our 22nd Anniversary. The complimentary valet parking was great and the service superb. The menu was diverse and our selections were good. The restaurant went above and beyond by offering a personalized menu for the occasion and a lovely card - memories. Thanks 1789!"

  • "This is one of my favorite restaurants in the US. Food is always excellent, the service outstanding, good wine list. It is pricey, but you get what you pay for here. I try to make it for dinner on one night whenever I come to the DC area."

  • "Excellent food and service. Great experience from entry into the restaurant to advice on entrée. Food was wonderful and waiter and busman were attentive but unobtrusive. I shall return."
    Dined on 7/29/2014
  • "This place is good but a bit overpriced. There are other places that are as good or better that charge less. But you're paying for the service here: impeccable and unmatched by any other restaurant I've visited."

  • "Overall a pleasant evening. The Service was outstanding and the surroundings were excellent for hosting an international client. However, we were not that impressed with some of the first course selections and entrees. Three of us selected the gazpacho soup with lump crab meat which was tasteless. The entrees were tasty but small portions."

  • "The dining experience this past week was definitely not as good as our previous experience. The service was good but the kitchen was slow. I had to send back a lamb dish because half of the meat was impossible to cut with a steak knife and the other half was full of fat. We were not charged for the dish which I appreciated, however that shouldn't be happening at such an upscale restaurant. Maybe they need a new butcher. I wasn't too thrilled with the dessert I had either."

  • "This restaurant continues to be one of our favorites for special occasions. It's quiet, convenient, has free valet parking and the food and service is always 1st rate. A new chef is on board, too early to comment on his style since the menu hasn't changed much. Hope he works out."

  • "When you arrived, everything is perfect. Stuff is waiting for you outside and inside to welcome you, so you feel a really warm welcome. The atmosthere and the location is great out of the hurry from DC. But the food was ok and nothing more. Our steaks wasnt cooked well. We ordered medium and get it raw or done. The service was perfect to. Everybody extrem friendly and professional. But in my oppion, I'm going out for the delicious food and thats not happened. Wonderful evening with middle class food."

  • "Went here for an anniversary dinner and boy did they impress. Everything was personalized, without asking for it and service was hands down the best I have ever had at a restaurant. I didn't know that you really had to do a multi-course meal, so be prepared -- you aren't forced too, but you would miss out on the whole experience. It is definitely pricey, but the quality of the food, atmosphere, service, and wine selection is the best I have seen of any restaurant in DC. Also, the food is amazing. Wouldn't have asked for a better restaurant in Georgetown."

  • "Sloppy fine dining service. Serving to the right, reaching over, intrusive comments from front waiter (told me not to eat too much bread because I'd ordered so much food, wow), courses on top of each other or 25 min apart. Food was really mediocre. Bread served cold, amuse bouche nothing special, fennel completely dominated fazzoletto and crab did not shine, ham was dry. Went to Olivia macaroons instead of dessert to save the night. From Richmond with a truly impressive burgeoning restaurant scene and used to hold dc's scene as superior, but I could have gotten a far better meal at home. I've seen culinary feats there that would make your chef blush. Bad bathroom. Great valet was best service all night.Don't usually like to review but . . ."

  • "So, we got there a little early. Sat at the bar and had some drinks. "Bob" was absolutely fantastic. Got seated. Ordered from the first/second course menus.... FABULOUS!!!! We were impressed and dying to get our food. We ordered the steak, duck, cod, and rockfish. The steak was reportedly great but the other three were highly disappointing. Duck fat was hardly rendered.... was greasy and fatty, not cooked as it should be. The cod and rockfish were incredibly overcooked and dry... so disappointing. We got desserts. They were fine, nothing to rave about. So, needless to say, we were off to a great start but ended up being rather disappointed. The wine was good the whole time, though! :)"

  • "The restaurant was great. Appetizer of the day was good. The Virginia Ham caught my eye and was recommended by our waiter. The ham was so dry that it would separate in strings of meat. I needed water to wash it down. My wife's filet was great. Deserts were also good. I had two glasses of wine with dinner...the restaurant charged me for three. I had an after dinner libation (vin santo) which was $22 a glass. The charge on my bill was $88. This plus the extra glass of wine I was charged for but didn't order brought my bill to over $100 more then it should have been. I will no longer order the ham and I will be sure to check my bill. Did they think that I wouldn't notice?"
