Diner Reviews
  • "I went with the Open Table star system for this one. We were coming into DC and needed a nice place for dinner. Wow!!! what an amazing experience. I would highly recommend great food, lots of history and very friendly staff. Next time I am in DC I am going to 1789."

  • "Even though my girlfriend were in high school and significantly younger than others there, the waiting staff still treated us outstandingly."

  • "I had planned a dinner to 1789 to celebrate my 5th anniversary and engagement to my fiancee (i had mentioned this as a note in the reservation). The food was wonderful, which was expected. What I didn't expect was just how wonderful our reception would be. We were congratulated by every member of staff we interacted with. This was nice, but fairly in the mainstream for upscale restaurants. Here is where 1789 went above and beyond: they had custom menus printed with the date and "Happy 5th Anniversary" printed on it which were given to us as gifts, and when the meal was over they gave us a card wishing us a happy anniversary as well. I can't say enough good things about our experience, but I would certainly recommend it and we will be back"

  • "Went to 1789 for a birthday celebration and it was a perfect spot to relax and be pampered. Told them in advance of birthday and they made it a very special evening. Service was impeccable. All food was beautifully presented and tasty. The Brussel sprout salad was a surprise and excellent."

  • "What a delight.....the service was flawless, the food exceptional, and the martini perfect! I started with the foie gras and I would rank it in the top 3 foie gras dishes I've eaten!"

  • "We went to 1789 to celebrate my birthday and it was a treat. It is like eating in an 18th century home, and every room has different interesting features. From past reviews I had the Duck Confit strudel and the Teres Major and they were delicious. We chose a local wine from Monticello which perfectly complimented the meal. The service was attentive without being invasive. Altogether a wonderful dining experience."

  • "1789 remains a wonderful selection for a special occasion. The variation of rooms and attentive service makes any visit special, but they do a nice job of making that anniversary or birthday unique."

  • "A great experience. The leek soup, Halibut cheeks, and roasted squab were fantastic. Service was also superb. Waiters anticipated our needs, were polite, and not intrusive. Will definitely make it our choice once a quarter."

  • "We had a fabulous experience at 1789 on Saturday night. My fiancee and I were visiting Washington from New York City and were treated with the utmost hospitality, grace and elegance. Our server, Robert, was completely lovely and attentive, without being over-bearing. The food was of a quality that is rarely experienced. The freshest ingredients, meals plated with creativity, without verging into crassness. We were comfortable and happy, and quite honestly, were in no rush to leave. To make the experience all the better, Robert personally found us a taxi for the ride home, and patiently waited for us outside to ensure we got to the taxi safely. Outstanding - would recommend it to a friend and certainly dine there again next time."

  • "1789 has a tremendous history in the area and you pay for that in their bill. I liked most of food selections but my wife did not. Service was superb! The restaraunt ambiance was also wonderful."

  • "Went for dinner with colleagues, but this would certainly be a good spot for a special occasion or a romantic evening, too. Foodies will not be disappointed. The food was lovely. Great wine list. A bit disappointed that we were not seated at the ground floor, which seems to have the best interior and atmosphere. Would definitely come back!"

  • "Loved the restaurant. The food was excellent, and the service was excellent. I would definitely eat there again if I stayed in Washington, D.C."

  • "Visiting DC and always wanted to try 1789. Went with my wife and another couple. Never had anything like the mushroom soufflé. Everything was just delicious and the atmosphere charming. Only wish the bathroom had not been on the third level. My wife had a sore knee that did not like going up the stairs."

  • "Food was very good and tasty. I had the snapper, my husband and one son had lamb and other son had pork. All very good. The greens were cooked to perfection."

  • "We arrived to a birthday party for my son and his girlfriend, and immediately they greeted them with happy birthday. Each of their menus had happy birthday and their name on it.The service and food was wonderful , and to end the night with a candle on each of their deserts. I just listed in open table that it was a birthday for 2 and names, Awesome!"

  • "Superb in all categories. It had been maybe 20 years since my wife and I last dined there, but it remains the premiere Georgetown/DC dining establishment."

  • "My wife and I always enjoy coming to 1789 for aniversary celebrations, birthdays, and other significant events. The reception and service is always most cordial. The food is imaginative and the wine selection is extensive. We strongly recommend 1789 for special occasions."

  • "From the free valley parking, the coat check, the cozy atmosphere, amazing staff, and VERY tasty dinner, my husband and I were dazzled by 1789. We knew the bill was going to be expensive, but worth every penny."

  • "1789 is a reataurant that continues to surprise in a positive sense. The Old World building may not be chic in today's world but the rooms are quiet and the service is first rate. Usually we do not order pasta at a non-Italian restaurant. We were glad we did at 1789 - the Ravioli del Plin and Gnocchetti Neri appetizer portions went perfect with our entrees. This is the first time I had Antartic Toothfish. Wow! If you have a chance try it. By the way - $20 corkage fee per bottle is terrific for those who like to bring wine - we brought a nice Bourdeaux and a Chardonnay and we were delighted the owners allow bringing nice bottles of wine from home although the wine list is very good in its own right."

  • "I hadn't been to 1789 in years but it's still a highly rated Washington D.C. fine dining restaurant. I found the menu very limited, the service was what you would expect at an expensive restaurant but the food was just "good". Nothing to write home about. What I had to eat there (the rib eye) was high quality meat but very pricey at about $54. Small selection of by the glass wines although we also got a bottle. Lovely cheese plate, rather skimpy for $18. Their breads are excellent. I wasn't very impressed overall and I've eaten at many of the high end establishments here all my life."

  • "We sat upstairs in Rose Garden Room, loved it, plus being in small room made it very intimate with tall candle burning on the few tables there."

  • "We had made reservations two months in advance for a "special table" to celebrate our 35th wedding anniversary. Even after a verbal confirmation, needless to say we were seated somewhere else. The service was outstanding and the Manager did everything possible to make up for our disappointment. The food was good but very rich. My wife who is allergic to nuts, was given a pre-dessert which contained nuts, by mistake. That might have really ended our evening. My wife and I have lived in Paris for four years and we have been fortunate to dine at some fantastic restaurants. It's a very nice restaurant but not good value for what we spent. We will not be going back."

  • "I had not been to the restaurant in 30 years. Seeing a color ad in the Washingtonian several months ago sparked my awareness. Live in the suburbs of Md. and don't really come into town that often. Thought the fireplace was great on a cold winter/spring night. Valet parking was a must and made it great in/out. I would rate the restaurant a 90."

  • "1789 is a gem of a beautiful, warm, and inviting Colonial Restaurant situated in the best neighborhood of Washington, D.C. The food and service are always top quality and never disappoints. The staff from Chef to the Waiters are warm and perfectly trained. The menu changes seasonally and takes full advantage of the areas offerings of local grown and sustainable foods. I highly recommend a visit!"

  • "All the dishes were superb from the cream of squash soup starter to the succulent Dover scallops, the warm breads with butter and red sea salt, the amazing Antarctic tile fish and the lobster farro accompanying the halibut, the beef and the wonderful lamb shoulder. We did not need dessert. The service from the Reservation desk to the waiter and the coat check and Valet parking were friendly and helpful without being obsequious. Altogether another memorable experience, 48 years after my wedding rehearsal dinner."

  • "We tend to eat here each time we come to the city - it is a splurge but usually worth the effort - not the case this time...The service was impeccable - truly top notch but not stuffy. The starter provided by the chef and bread were outstanding - also enjoyed my pasta appetizer - others got salads which got mixed reviews. Entrees were presented beautifully but were not as flavorful as we have experienced in the past. Desserts were also just rated as average with the exception of the bourbon vanilla ice cream which was a true standout! We will go back next time we are in town but for the price I hope our next experience is the gastronomic delight that we have experienced in the past and not the mixed experience we had this time..."

  • "Though a tad pricey, 1789 remains a great place to go for a special meal. The food is excellent, the ambience is formal without being stuffy which gives a celebratory dinner a special feel. The staff are attentive, the menu is interesting and well thought out. Had a great time once again."

  • "every 1789 staff member we encountered wished us a happy anniversary! megan, our server, was just perfect. it was so thoughtful for the personalized menu and the anniversary card. our experience re-iterated why we chose 1789 for our wedding reception dinner, and why we will return for special occasions for many years to come. the food was classically exquisite, and the service was exceptional."

  • "Celebrated our wedding anniversary here recently. We couldn't have asked for more! The setting, food, drinks and service were all exceptional!"

  • "The best rib eye I have ever eaten & the best foie gras I have ever tasted - both in one place on one night - gastronomic ecstasy. The celery root soup was superb, according to others at the table, as was everything else they ate. The wine list was great, and they were also perfectly fine with popping a special bottle that we had brought with us. Service was attentive, helpful, friendly and informative - the whole dinner just couldn't have been better. The desserts were also amazing. A great place for a special occasion!"

  • "1789 never disappoints! It is a special dining experience, where the food is always top notch, and the service makes you feel presidential!"

  • "Still lovely but change of attire rules has down graded atmosphere and created a mixed atmosphere that's no longer old world formal and neither new style business casual."

  • "We celebrated our wedding anniversary at 1789 and it was just perfect! Food and service were excellent. No complaints whatsoever."

  • "My first visit to this restaurant, and it was a true culinary experience. Incredibly attentive service, anticipating our needs without hawking about. The food was simply extravagant. We had a party of 5 and shared appetizer dishes, our entrees and several bottles of wine. Cheese plate, Foie Gras Torchon Brule', pork shoulder ravioli, and Antarctic Toothfish. One of the best dinners I have ever had the pleasure of enjoying. Chef Anthony, my guests and I sincerely thank you for a wonderful evening. I'm already looking forward to returning next year!"
