Diner Reviews
  • "We were a group of three with a visit history to the Del including a two night stay MANY years ago. However, we had not dined at the 1500 before. Perhaps the main reason for the 3 star food rating rather than 4 star, was the Colorado Lamb Chops entree. It was cooked properly BUT the cut of meat had way too much fat. There ARE lean lamb chops, you know."

  • "Our favorite place to eat. When you do get a new chef...please leave everything as is. (Unless you want to add something) Fillet was outstanding...Also....I have a few food allergies and you are very accomoditing about that. Thanks for that..... Mark is a supurb waiter....."

  • "This was the 2nd time we ate here in 4 days and again, it was out of this world. The service, presentation, and food was outstanding. Can't wait to here on our next trip here"

  • "The service was excellent and attentive. The food was good, but did not match expectations. The eastern oysters were small and inferior to those of the Pacific Northwest. The fish selection was a bit overdone and somewhat dry. We subsequently cancelled our second evening reservations in favor of trying sa different restaurant."

  • "One of the best dining experiences I had. Service was impeccable, as was the presentation. When at the Del, you must eat here."

  • "The overall experiencewas phenomenal. we were celebrating our 25 anniversary. OUr first "sit down" meal was at the Prince of Wales Room (now 1500) 25 years ago. We celebrated our 20th at 15o0o and have now celebrated our latest milestone and as usual, the entire experience was such that I would recommend it to anyone."

  • "This was our favorite meal while we were in San Diego/Coronado for 5 days (we ate at a lot of places). We did the 4 course meal which was a little less pricey. The food was excellent. The risotto dish is to die for and the chocolate cake dessert is superb. We will definitely go back to this place when we are vacationing again."

  • "Tasting menu was a mixed bag. Mostly ok food, some was marginal at best. The bright spot: Service was as good as it gets. Prices were very reasonable. Too many great places in SD to dine. This is not in the top 25."

  • "Armando greeted us by name , wished our grand-daughter a " Happy Birthday " ( which blew her socks off ) , organized the wine preference , previewed the menu ( highlighting the " specials " ) including his recommendations , all this was just for openers ! The food ( including service ) was fantastic . We all left more than sated . The only sour note was the Parking Commissar demanding an additional $10.00 on top of the voucher until I refused , and the " Oh year , it's free " ! After ( happily ) dropping $ 550.00 for a great evening , this was more than a little disconcerting . "

  • "Like everything at the Del this was grotesquely overpriced. We ate at the restaurant while staying at the hotel out of near convenience. It was one of the most disappointing meals I have ever had. My duck was very gamy. My partners Seabass was overcooked. The appetizers and dessert were run-of-the-mill. The server was enthusiastic and attentive but all the food fell short. It lacked any originality and what it really lacked was any flavor. It really was remedial cuisine at a Michelin Star price."

  • "One of the best restaurants we have ever been to. At dinner the food, service, and ambience were superb! We went early at 6 and ate outside on the patio. Mark was our server and Rudy assisted. He was extremely professional, attentive, friendly and even gave us a history lesson about the area. We had the four course dinner for $75. It included cold choices to start. I had tuna sashimi. The presentation was as beautiful as the tuna was good. The second course was hot choices. I had prawns. Somehow they cook prawns better than anywhere - I would love to know how. The third choice was the main meal and I had the California duck. It was, at my request, prepared medium well. It was tender and moist, a hard thing to achieve. "

  • "We spent my husband's birthday at the Hotel Del and dined at 1500 Ocean. The food was incredible -- my husband had sea bass and I had a mushroom risotto that were just magnificent. Service was attentive without hovering. The view from the outside deck is beautiful right on the ocean -- the ocean breeze, the beautiful sunset and the excellent food made for a wonderful evening. We would most definitely return."

  • "I arranged dinner reservations online for my love's 50th birthday dinner, enterings the notation of it being his 50th, and food allergies. Upon arrival, we were graciously greeted, seated, and met our wait staff including Leo, our primary server, and Tomas. I was very pleasantly surprised when Leo immediately asked whose birthday it was, and mentioned the "Gluten intolerance". EVERYTHING was fantastic. The Chef, and I didn't get his or her name, made Jonathan fresh gluten free bread. I had the best filet mignon I've ever had - prepared to perfection. The recommended wine, a most excellent choice by Leo. This dining event is worth every penny. I can't wait to return. Side note to "family"; they're very gay friendly, too! "

  • "My wife and I wanted to revisit 1500 OCEAN for my Birthday. We have been consistently delighted by the food, service, and ambiance. Unfortunately, this time, although the service was outstanding and the ambiance equally outstanding, I did something I rarely ever do, and that's return my steak. I ordered the filet mignon medium rare and the steak that came to our table was definitely cooked medium+ and was dry. John, our waiter, was apologetic and came back with another filet, this time it was almost raw. Not wanting to return a second steak, I ate some of it. John was kind enough to remove the steak from our bill. Perhaps it was an off night for the chef... but we'll be back again. Regarding customer service, John is a credit to 1500 OCEAN!"

  • "My wife and I were celebrating a special occasion and staying at the Del so we decided to try 1500 Ocean. Very glad we did! Service was awesome (many thanks to Mark our waiter). We did the 4 course meal and the food was very good. We sat outside overlooking the ocean and couldn't have asked for any better scenery. Very memorable night!"

  • "We were visiting San Diego from NY and as part of celebrating our 50th wedding anniversary this year, I wanted to take my wife to a special place for dinner. The Del is such a place and we had a very nice evening. She had never been to SD so it was special for her to visit Coronado and the Del. "

  • "The Hotel del Coronado is a historic landmark. 1500 Ocean is however not a landmark restaurant. The Zagat review appears pretty inflated. A colleague and I both ordered the tasting menu with wine pairings. Although the food was OK, it was not particularly skillfully prepared or presented; it was vastly overpriced given the unremarkable quality. Meat courses were either under or overdone. Service was astoundingly poor, and detracted from the dining experience. Although attentive, the server was astoundingly awkward and obtrusive, and didn't seem particularly knowledgable about the menu. The dining room was unremarkable in design and lighting, and seemed somewhat dilapidated. The open air design and view are nice. I would avoid returning."

  • "A modern restaurant in the traditional hotel is a must-see for San Diego visitor. We two ordered a 4-couse dinner with regular somelier wine pairing. The wine pairing means 4 half-glasses of wine matching to the selected dishes (1 or 2 variations for each course). Found all dishes perfect and the wine pairing is really matching. The house-made bread is very good and tempting. The dessert was the chocolate cake with port wine, very good pair. The service was attentive and recommended us a small promenade at the ocean side that we've done with pleasure. It was expensive but we don't feel ripped off 'cause we're happy. Excellent and that's it."

  • "Pros: Gorgeous setting with a great ambiance. Service was very attentive and friendly. They happily sat us right away even though we were almost 45 minutes early to our reservation. Beautiful view. The hotel is a great place for tourists (and locals who just like touristy things, like me) Cons: The pork chops that I got were huge and came with a veggie. It is delicious, but I wouldn't write home about it. I was, however thankful that it was so huge, because my husband's Sea Bass dinner was very small and had NO sides with it. We like to refer to these meals as "pretentious". And any restaurant that tries to serve $45 ice cream (a table next to us got it) and then serve less than a cup to each person at the table deserves that title."

  • "Dining outdoors overlookng the ocean at The Del is incredible, but Oceans 1500 does it superbly. Great service, fixed price menu option, outstanding food and ambiance. Definitely a special occasion or vacation resort treat the of experience. My wife and I took our time, did not feel rushed, relaxed and enjoyed an excellent meal. "

  • "My wife and I went here for our wedding anniversary, and we were very pleased. We had the four course pre fixe menu with the "reserve" wine pairings, and everything was delicious. The wine pairings were very well done, and included some interesting choices. They also included a wine pairing to go with our dessert course, which was a pleasant surprise. Our waiter was attentive and professional, although he laid it on a bit too thick for my taste. The room was a little noisier than we expected, but it wasn't unmanageable (although it would have been too much for our parents). Overall we had a lovely meal, and we'll probably go back the next time we're in town."

  • "We are here about 10 years ago. We were treated as if we were the only couple in the restaurant and the food was magnificent. My husband and I couldn't believe that some people wore jeans and sneakers and then the hostess sat a couple and their 3 year old son next to us! This is not a restaurant for children! Sadly, we won't return."

  • "We had dinner on the patio, which overlooked an open grassy area and the beach. The waiter surprised me when he called me by my name. And, I realized it was the reservations I made through Open Table. Props ! I had the double cut pork chop. It was lean, yet tender and oh sooo good. I recommend it. "

  • "One not to miss if traveling through Coronado. This would be Del's elite restaurant. Table service was excellent, John was very attentive and had excellent recommendations. The tasting menu was very unique, and the opiton to substitute first courses for seconds was great. Just with I didn't have to send the Conac back for heating after the bartender thought it would be better cold."

  • "The view and ambiance are simply outstanding, in particular should you be celebrating a special occasion. The service was personal, responsive, and professional throughout. Finally, the food was excellent providing sensible portions, pleasing presentation, and exquisite taste. All of this provided an evening that will be remembered and repeated."

  • "Most people head for the Crown Room at the Hotel Del. I would recommend the smaller more intimate Ocean 1500. The food is excellent and if you choose to dine on the patio you can't beat the view."

  • "My wife and I had a fantastic dinner at 1500 Ocean. The steak was the best I have had in years, way better than Flemmings even! The sides were great and the service was near perfect! I can't wait to go back!"

  • "We loved our whole dining experience from beginning to end. We were welcomed early at the outside bar and were treated exceptionally by two waitresses. They treated us as if we were their only customers. Upon arriving at the restaurant we were welcomed by the staff and taken to a wonderful table next to the window. Great view of the beach and sunset! Our waiter John welcomed us to the restaurant and walked us through our evening. My husband and John related right away talking about their lives in the Navy. We selected the four course meal and accompanying wine selection. A wise choice for us as it was incredible from the first glass of wine to our dessert selection. The lobster risotto was out of this world and the rest of the meal! Nice"

  • "Outstanding place! 4 course meal a bit pricey....i would rather see it around 60 instead of the 75 dollar price tag but very good. Steak was a bit overdone but their response was quick and satisfactory. The manager even through in a swig of some very expensive cab."

  • "We chose this restaurant based on location and reviews to celebrate our 6th anniversary. Boy were our needs met and then-some! Server was friendly, very knowledgeable, making our evening enjoyable. We opted for the specialty wine pairing...WHAT A TREAT! The beef carpaccio was probably the best I've ever, then came the second course---braised veal cheeks..a slice of true heaven! We felt like a kids at Christmas by the time our main dishes arrived, lamb chops and sea bass, each course kept getting better..and the wine pairings were superbly chosen! Our meal came to an end with a delightful presentation of our very own home made liquid nitrogen ice cream for dessert complete with all the toppings. One memorable evening...thank you!"
