A word from 1300 on Fillmore
1300 on Fillmore is a restaurant and lounge that draws on the rich cultural history of San Francisco's Fillmore Jazz District. The restaurant serves "Soulful American" Cuisine, accompanied by a list of the finest California wines.

Soulful American Cuisine prepared as interpreted by internationally recognized chef David Lawrence. Lawrence combines classic French cooking techniques with hints of southern flavors using fresh, California seasonal ingredients. His north-meets-south cuisine includes imaginative creations such as dungeness crab and corn cakes, fresh water shrimp hush puppies, as well as refined interpretations of
southern favorites including macaroni and cheese and okra succotash.

Highlights include a heritage wall with portraits of the Fillmore’s vast array of blues and jazz legends. The
décor is eclectic and familiar, achieved by co-mingling vintage-inspired fabrics with modern interpretations of classic furnishings.

Diner Reviews
  • "This was our first time at 1300 Fillmore and it will not be our last. Our waiter Geno was outstanding. The food was amazing and everyone enjoyed their dinner. All of the severs were very attentive. They came around and wiped the water from the glasses off our table. This is a class act."

  • "Food is so...so...Service needs improvement. Great bar and lounge scene. Would go back only for a cocktail and maybe a small plate."

  • "I had come to 1300 years ago with my job for our staff Christmas party. Met the chef, enjoyed absolutely delicious, well presented cuisine. This time around, I was having friends up for the weekend, visiting from southern Cali and Vegas and I wanted them to have an unforgettable dining experience along with an outstanding show at Yoshi's. You didn't fail me, 1300!! Great food, service and ambiance. Thank you and you will see us again!"

  • "This restaurant is great. I found some of the menu items to be really inventive (for example, the matchstick okra was wonderful) and the atmosphere was very relaxing which was a welcome change from a hectic conference I was attending in the city. Thanks for a great meal!"

  • "The pastries were absolutely delicious. The entertainment wasn't really gospel, more R & B, but they were skilled and fun to listen to. The dining room is crowded and a little dark. There were no paper towels in the restroom on a first check; remedied about a half hour later. The service from our server was good, but the runner auctioned off our plates."

  • "We've eaten at 1300 on Fillmore regularly over the past few years, and we've never had less than a delightful experience. We have out-of-town friends who come to SF for an annual get-together, and they always insist on eating here. The only time we've ever quibbled, in fact, is over the last shrimp hush puppy--lord, are they good. Recently I've had to reduce sodium in my diet. I spoke to the restaurant in advance and they were very gracious about accommodating my dietary needs. The food is superb, and so is the service. The staff here is well-trained and professional. They make us feel pampered and well taken care of. It's a skill that is lacking in too many other restaurants. 1300 on Fillmore sets the standard for excellent service."

  • "We had a great meal. The fried chicken is amazing. The shorts ribs are terrific. The service was excellent as well."

  • "This was honestly one of the best dining experiences I have had in a very long while! The service was impeccable--from the servers' understanding of the history and menu options of the restaurant to the prompt and courteous attention to drink refills! The food speaks for itself: just absolutely phenomenal mixtures of tastes and textures that take that down-home southern Black folks' "grandmama in the kitchen" to the absolute next level with the infusion of flavors I'd never had before. I'll definitely be back; it will now be a staple restaurant choice for all of my out-of-town visitors!! Well done 1300, well done!!"

  • "On vacation with hubby and 2 teenagers. Beautiful interior & atmosphere. Attentive service. Waiter happily accommodated our request for our son of an unadorned rib-eye and a side of mashed potatoes. Daughter who likes spicy food, ordered the signature chicken dish. The waiter said the coating is spicy. She was underwhelmed. I even thought it was underwhelming and I'm a spice wimp. We are from the north & maybe we don't have a handle on southern fried chicken--we'd never had it before. I ordered the beef short rib and loved every bite. Hubby got the mussels and the catfish and loved them both."

  • "It is just few blocked south of Japan Town, there were some street parking and parking garages in Japan town, which make the parking situation less street. Food was decent, Ambience was great. I will definitely go back."

  • "We were excited to return to 1300 as we were there the previous week and the food was phenomenal. The salmon appetizer in the prix fix menu stole the show and was the reason we returned(the following week). Unfortunately, the second time around was not nearly as good as the first. The lettuce in the salad was wilted and the cut of the pork chop that was served was below par, and clearly not the same prime cut that was served the week before. The salmon entrée was quite delicious, and it was ordered "rare". The restaurant is very nice, and provides various entertainment features. However the quality of the food is not consistent and therefore, not worth the high price."

  • "My 2 girl friends and I loved this place! Must haves....shrimp and grits, blackened fried chicken with mashed potatoes and biscuits! So good I want to go back! Don't bother with the okra :/ nor the little gem salad...we were all disappointed with those 2. We had an amazing server! And ran into Willie Brown there! ;) love the decor too!"

  • "1300 is great for a date night. The food was great with the exception of the undercooked greens. Great service!"

  • "Most of the things we ordered were amazing but the main dish of fried chicken was not very flavorful. Also the oyster appetizer have 6 oysters and most of the oysters are tiny with only a few medium sized ones. Overall amazing food though."

  • "Three of us. The mixed green salad was OK (and I had it without the okra). The shrimp and grits: not much flavor in the overall dish, but the grits were not gummy. The roasted catfish didn't have much flavor, either, and there wasn't much catfish on the plate. Two of us had the BBQ burger and both judged as it OK; some heat, but nothing interesting. The chips seemed a bit stale and too salty. The side order of mac and cheese was inedible - the blue cheese completely overwhelmed the dish. The chocolate chip cookies seemed microwaved and the banana cream pie was all cream and not much banana. I like the interior design and the maitre d was great. Service wobbled a bit and was uneven (served the wrong plates). Food is average at best."

  • "Went to the gospel brunch. The bottomless pomosas are great. My food was lackluster (I got the 1300 which was bacon, eggs, and potatoes since I don't eat grits). Food was lukewarm and lacked flavor. Eggs didn't taste like real ones, tasted like a mix. My girlfriend got the shrimp and grits and liked it. The gospel music was great. The quartet they featured was great to listen to. The music, the atmosphere, the service and pomosas are the reasons why I would go back. I will try something else next time and hope for better food. Not worth the price I paid for what I got."

  • "Spent a recent Saturday date night here. The place was busy, but not too crowded. I really liked the variety of quality dishes. Whether it was beef, fish or fowl, each dish had good flavor and beautiful presentation. The service could have been a little more attentive (slow getting water glasses filled, extra napkin, etc.), but that might have been because of two large parties simultaneously dining."

  • "Some of the best soul food in all of SF! Chef Max came out of New Orleans, and he tries to use local ingredients to create updated choices. Our highlights - great cocktails, scallops with candied bacon, deviled eggs, pork chop and burger. We finished with awesome chocolate-filled beignets. Highly recommended, come hungry"

  • "Every dish a winner. We had the Black Skillet Fried Chicken and everything on the plate was well seasoned with an appetizing presentation. I tried the Watermelon & Feta Salad which was refreshing and light. My husband had the Organic Baby Lettuces which comes with cheddar cheese and a very tasty Cider Vinaigrette dressing. Neither salad was overdressed. Just right. My BFF had the Maple Syrup Braised Beef Short Rib with a side of Braised Greens. The very minor complaint was that the onion ring was soggy and added nothing to the dish. Her husband had the special Baby Back ribs with a dry rub. The ribs were tender and falling off the bone but the sauces need a little work as one tasted like French's Mustard and the other like ketchup."

  • "Good (not stupendous) food, and excellent service. However $90 for two entrees, one appetizer and two soft drinks is pretty high. Add tip and parking (not validated) the total came to $120. High by a factor of 2X for what we got."

  • "Been going there for the last two years. They have amazing music weekends. The bar has energy, and the drinks are good. Service is good. But food has deteriorated. Is no longer the same, kind of of very average. In the past it was just a more carefully made. Perhaps is my bad luck. But in the past the food here was more precisely made."

  • "This restaurant lived up to everything it promised to be on its website and via the reviews I'd read in advance. Southern style comfort foods served up gourmet style with creative twists. From salads, to fried chicken, beef short rib and steak - all cooked to perfection with wonderful flavors and sauces added to the mix. the fried okra side was amazing (including the dipping sauce). We shared two desserts - the beignets with chocolate and caramel dipping sauces were unlike any kind of beignet I've had, and the sorbet flavors were intense and flavorful. Great cocktails, very good selection on the wine list at all prices. lovely ambience and decor. One of our best meals out."

  • "Informed wait staff. I let him choose the wine and it was just right. The three of us shared three mains, a side and dessert. Enough to eat. We licked the plates clean. Thanks for a delightful evening"

  • "Great food, excellent service, very friendly and flexible maitre'd. I went with four girlfriends and had a Thursday 7pm reservation. 1300 Fillmore allows its staff the authority to make decisions they deem good for superior service. Two of us arrived after 7 and the maitre'd was very flexible about letting us enjoy our drinks in the lounge area without worrying about the rest of our party arriving. At the table the waiter described the menu and dish preparations with great pride and familiarity. When our group of five ordered the fried green tomato appetizer (delicious!) with four pieces, he graciously said he'd make sure a fifth tomato would be included, and it was. The rock fish, short ribs, fried chicken, and spare ribs were delicious!"

  • "Chef David and staff continue to bring sophisticated Southern fare to the Fillmore, and provide a gathering space worthy of our Sunday best. There are solid veg options, and old favorites have been tweaked: the beignets -- chocolate! -- have never been better. They're the best I've had (sorry Cafe Du Monde!)."

  • "My boyfriend and I dined here on a Saturday night. The restaurant was busy but not uncomfortably crowded and the ambiance is jazzy, comfortable and classy. The hostess staff was very polite, bar staff not so much.. Club price drinks but well worth it! 1 was enough! We had the Shrimp and Grits as a appetizer (creamy and excellent seasoning). We shared the fried chicken (with biscuits and mash) and the beef spare rib (fell off the bone with greens and mash). Over all it was very tasty. Corn bread was perfect on the side. Nice outting, especially for ppl who don't go out often. Staff was very attentive... once they noticed us."

  • "We arrived early and sat in the bar. My husband sat in Willie Brown's seat. I this acknowledge of "our" Mayor. We had two glasses of champagne. Then we were escorted to our table. I had the cornbread pancake with smoked salmon, capers and molasses. It was delicious. Mr. Don, had the chicken salad. His salad was so tasty that he craved it on Monday. All was served quickly; smelled and looked wonderful. We ordered the bottomless champagne drink which means, glasses should stay filled as indicated. We let our server know that our glasses had been empty for awhile. With one quick apology, our glasses were refilled and continued to be refilled by every available staff person. All and all and by far 1300 on Fillmore is our "go to" place!"

  • "Our first meal at 1300 on Fillmore couldn't have been more perfect. The three of us ordered different entrees and shared the various and absolutely delicious creations from the kitchen, including the Maple Short Rib! WOW! The Southern/Soul influences were notable and took us on a journey away from the Bay Area. That said, our server, George, knew we had tickets to the Fillmore that evening and ensured we were contented diners and "on time" for the show, as well. George, by the way, deserves a raise and BIG TIPS! He was fantastic, and perfectly guided us through our various selections from the bar and kitchen. We will definitely go back next time we're in the area."

  • "First visit to this restaurant for my wife's birthday. It was also during the "Dine SF" promotional period. The menu is very appealing, however we took advantage of the three course prixe fixe three course menu being offered during the promo. We started with bay scallops and delicately fried okra strips on a bay of potato puree (excellent), the main course choices were a hanger steak with small Yukon potatoes and cherry tomatoes, the other a red snapper with wild mushrooms and sautéed spinach ...both excellent, and the dessert a strawberry/rhurbarb cobbler with vanilla ice cream (to die for). All the flavors on each of the dishes were outstanding and the presentation very appealing to the eye."

  • "From the moment you walk in to the inviting lounge/bar area we were impressed to find such a great space and vibe! We had a gathering of 8 people to celebrate a special occasion and our waitress really made the whole experience memorable with her playful attitude and professionalism. The best part was the food of course- fried chicken was out of this world! All of us decided to order one of everything so we could try all the wonderful entrees on the menu and many of the appetizers like the duck pancake, fried green tomatoes w/squash blossoms and the mac/cheese. We were not disappointed. I will be recommending this restaurant to all my friends and colleagues"

  • "We enjoyed the tasty fried green tomato appetizer, and the 100 ways cocktail was yummy. Fried chicken off the hook- and the catfish was just right. Service was good, pacing just right. Is recommend this for friends, double-date... Maybe not the romantic dinner for two (too much food!)"

  • "We loved 1300 Fillmore! We arrived for a 5:30 seating for Dine About Town, but it was not available on Fridays. We were seated in the dining room and told our waiter Jorge that it was our first time and heard the specials. The chef sent out a double serving of the tempura fried green tomatoes with squash blossoms which were scrumptous. I ordered the signature black skillet fried shicken and it was good, but I like bones in my chicken. My dining companions ordered the short ribs-a spectacular presentation-and the rack of pork ribs which was huge. The banana cream pie was delicious-the beignets-not-just donuts. The space is beautiful and the ambience of the bar-inviting with the old back-lit photos. We will go back and try some other classics!"
