Diner Reviews
  • "We've eaten here once a year for the last several years when we visit Honalulu. The food and service have always been top notch. This restaurant would stand out from the crowd even in more populated "foodie" cities. The recent reno has given them more space but lost some of the charm of the original. Nevertheless, we will be back, as the food continues to shine!"

  • "We especially enjoyed the brussel sprout salad and monchong special. Flavors were varied and interesting, and everything was cooked perfectly."

  • "It was my boyfriend's birthday, and I took him to 12th Ave. Grill. We both had cocktails, and shared a number of small plates, an entrée, and dessert. Our waiter was knowledgeable and very helpful!"

  • "From the ahi tartare (HIGHLY, HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!) to the flourless chocolate cake, this meal was beyond reproach. The tartare was amazing with the tiny bits of citrus peel--the addition made this a memorable dish! Our server was very accommodating with ensuring that we had only the bread we liked, making suggestions, and overall treating us as best friends rather than as simply a server doing her job. My friend had the white bean and ham hock soup. The smokey flavor was not overpowering but just enough to really fulfill a down-home comforting meal. The chicken I ordered was juicy, and the mashed potatoes and wilted spinach were wonderful. Dessert, the best part, was also amazing! Overall, this meal was one I will really remember."

  • "Looking for a place to dine in Honolulu can be a challenge. Found this gem through opentable. Looked at the menu, they had availability and went. It was my best dinning experience during my entire trip. Most of the menu's ingredients are grown locally. The staff is very friendly and will guide you with your choice. My Opah was delicious as well as the pork chop. The bread pudding for desert was delicious. Very well priced."

  • "This is the first time we've been at this restaurant in their new location. It was awesome...food was delicious...ambiance was marvelous. It was a nice way to celebrate our anniversary!"

  • "My sister and I celebrated our birthday there on a Sunday. Sunday is less crowded than saturdays. Our waitress Jen was extremely attentive and friendly. The wine, meal and dessert were delicious! However, I do not recommend their ceasar salad - not great. It was dull. (Assaggios ceasar salad number #1)."

  • "Maybe we had a bad night from the kitchen but the food wasn't up to par with the old location. Got into the parking lot and into a 10 minute grid to get out. Ended u p parking in the neighborhood Koko Head side and walking in. No prob for us but if clients could not walk it would have been a bummer"

  • "Went with friends and decided to do pupus to share instead of dinner individually. Oysters were great! Mac and Cheese is 'to die' for. Flourless Chocolate cake was one of the best i have eaten but ice cream was half melted when brought to our table! i was surprised to see that at this caliber of a restaurant."

  • "First time at the restaurant celebrating a friends birthday. Went early because was concerned about parking. Got there early and saw the happy hour menu and decided to sit at a table in the bar. It was a great choice! We had drinks, fish tacos and caesar salad from the happy hour menu. Then we decided to keep in the shared plates theme and got roasted brussels sprouts, beet salad, mashed taro, kampachi etc. Service was great! Food was tasty and different, but not too much so. We also could see what was going on in the separate dining room (the governor was there) as well as food going by. They brought a poha berry cheese cake with a candle for desert. I'm not a cheese cake fan, but it was good."

  • "Came in with a friend for a light meal. Love the Brussels sprouts and the beet salad; great mango crumble for dessert. The waiter was nice and efficient and the manager came over to ask if all was well. It was!"

  • " The new place is a little dark and less welcoming. We were excited about trying the Sunday supper (clam bake) but it was VERY uneven: the best cornbread I have ever eaten in a restaurant, followed by the WORST cobbler, ever. The blueberries were good, but they were swimming in a soupy, cloyingly sweet liquid, with a tough little non-cobbler pastry crust, topped with a tiny dollop of whipped cream. The clams, mussels and shrimp were all top quality, but the kielbasa was dry, tasteless and crumbly and the broth it had all been cooked in was not something you'd want to soak up with the cornbread. The potatoes were maybe pre-cooked because they came out mushy and nearly inedible. Halfway they swapped waitstaff with no explanation."

  • "I have stopped dining out because my partner and I are tired of being disappointed with either the food, service or ambience at many of the areas so called "fine dining" restaurants. The pattern in Hawaii seems to be when restaurants first open everything is wonderful but the next time you go it is a huge disappointment and you go a third time only to be disappointed again. Restaurant roulette is not fun at the prices most of these places charge for a meal. This is not limited to the high end only. I suppose it is the tourist trade that has most places not caring whether you come back or not. And the reviews of sites like Yelp are a total joke. I was very pleased with the food but time will tell if this place is worth keeping as a "go to"."

  • "A neighborhood gem for pupus and drinks 5:30-6:30....made a reservation both times & easily accommodated. Food is tasty and satisfying (though on the greasy side) . Staff is friendly, sometimes overwhelmed so order several eats at a time. It's a good place to take a guest for an early dinner. Good parking, no validation but only $1.50 upon exiting."

  • "My wife and I went to 12 Ave Grill on a Saturday night for a late (8:15 p) dinner. We ordered a couple of small plates and entrees to share, and enjoyed everything without being amazed by any one dish. It was a nice experience, but for about $150 for the two of us I suspect it won't be a terribly common one."

  • "This used to be one of my boyfriend's favorite restaurants, particularly for their Pork Chop. This was our first time at their new location, and we were celebrating his birthday. Although I had made a note of the occasion in my reservation, not a single person mentioned it. Kind of a bummer, cause I wanted him to feel extra special on his day. This is NOT a romantic restaurant, but I already knew that, so no points taken off there. Our waitress was ok, she didn't mention or explain the specials, or anything really. My boyfriend was a little disappointed that his pork chop wasn't as moist as he remembers it being, but said it was still good. Overall I just don't think the service and food justifies their prices."

  • "Hats off to the inventive, hearty nature of its dishes. Started with a beet salad - little glowing gems 4 kinds of heirloom beets, lightly adorned. Delicious! Followed w/Rabbit Duo (special) coriander braised leg & spicy barbecue riblets served with a giblet risotto. Genius. Solid bar craft and an interesting late night (10 p.m.) bar menu. As noted by others, clubby ambience of old location not well preserved...some tiny (seriously narrow) booths, but mostly two tops (too close together) leaving one dinerʻs butt protruding into a high traffic aisle. Loud and clangy, uneven lighting. No table cloths - too casual for the altitude of the cuisine. Staff a little reactive to preparation requests by my date. Still and all - love it!"

  • "We were seated promptly. Jen, our server, was an excellent source of info. Other staff and she circulated frequently without hovering. Very good wine by the glass list, beyond standard choices, allowing spot-on pairing. We did apps. Red beet gnocchi is an OMG dish. Mac&cheese w/Hamakua mushrooms was superb, as always. Roasted olive/anchovy special was excellent. The saffron remoulade was too subtle for the beer battered avocado, needed some acid for balance. High level of service, despite expanded seating, but parking is an issue in the new location. Will definitely be back!"

  • "Went to the new venue with an old friend. Our server was super nice and made some good recommendations. He and his helper were attentive without being overbearing. I tried the watercress and watermelon salad with feta with house made bacon from pork cheek. I was a little leery of the bacon but was told it is similar to prosciutto. This combination was delicious but the bacon was not my thing, much too fatty and limp. My friend and I ordered 2 different fish dishes and shared, both were good. My friend and I hadn't seen each other for awhile so we lingered and talked. The wait staff did not make us feel like we had to leave and kept refilling our water glasses. I prefer the old venue."

  • "Nice restaurant but really noisy. The food was spendy and while the pork chop and mac & cheese was yummy, my short ribs were just ok but the root vegetables that came with it were little rocks."

  • "While the menu did not offer too many options from which to choose, what we did choose was excellent. We started with the crispy beer battered avocado (ordered because it sounded unusual and interesting). This was very good. The steaks were delicious. The desserts were exceptional - my friend had the Afogado. She said she would definitely order it again. I had the flourless chocolate cake. It was moist and very tasty."

  • "One of Kaimuki's great dining restaurants...for dinner! Menu changes with the available local, farmed ingredients. The seafood soup/chowder actually had chunks of seafood, too bad the serving bowl was really shallow! Although my lamb shank was slightly over cooked (sometimes 'local cooking' is like that) the overall taste of the plate's presentation (grilled brussels sprouts...) was great. The peach-strawberry crisp was crisp and tasty, not too sweet or soggy! The meal with a bottle of Whispering Angel (Cotes De Provence) was most enjoyable and memorable! Now, if I could also enjoy their "bar menu" in the dining area I would be able to enjoy a complete bistro dining experience!"

  • "The service was very good. Everything else was okay, but nothing really was a knockout The food was satisfying, but missed that special "I gotta come back for this again" taste, especially at their prices and portion sizes which lead you to expect that. I've been dining with them for a long time. Both here, and at the old location. This was not one of my top experiences at either location"

  • "Food was delicious. My husband enjoyed the flat iron steak and I enjoyed the soup of the day (flavorful pork and beans) along with the beet salad. My complaint lies primarily with the service. It seemed to take quite some time for our server to make her way over to us, and she wasn't particularly friendly or knowledgeable. With the prices as high as they were I would hope for better."

  • "Fine contemporary American cooking. Must try: the house made Big Island Red Beet Gnocchi w caramelized pear, pancetta, stilton blue cheese, toasted walnuts, crispy sage, balsamic reduction. Skirt steak is special too. Something for everyone. "

  • "Loved it the first visit even with the threat of $150. penalty on my cc if we were late or no shows. I work in a five diamond restaurant and even we don't do that. Loved the pork belly confit, the beet gnocchi and the steak, chicken and duck. The second time around we had the specials which were excellent. Loved the duck corn dog! The beet salad however lacked pizzazz. While it's been around a while the warm chocolate cake was very good-chocolaty and warm-a nice contrast with the gelato. Love having a great "neighborhood restaurant" like this in the area that we can walk to. Would love to try the Sunday night dinners sometime. They sound so good."

  • "The ambiance is that of an old diner feel. Although they tried to dress up the place, but it still resembles a diner. The food is also a bit over priced. Tasty, but you feel you are paying more than you should for the food."

  • "This was our first visit to the 12th Ave Grill's new location. It's very nice! Despite the fact that it's twice as large as its previous location, it hasn't lost its intimate, personal atmosphere. We enjoyed the Sunday Supper option. We've both got pretty good appetites and the Sunday Supper satisfied both of us. We look forward to our next visit - yum!"

  • "Aloha, I have never been to 12th avenue grill but it was a place I wanted to try since it uses local grown food. I want to support Hawaii growers as usually it is so tasty. We made reservations and were seated right next to the bar which was the busiest area of the restaurant. My beau has a hearing problem and it meant we could not have a conversation. The place was full but the bar was the most happening area with not many eating even tho the restaurant was full. Dessert was the best part of the meal! Truly disappointed. Chalk it up to being a neighborhood restaurant and not much else."

  • "Our server was very attentive. The food on the other hand, was disappointing. We ordered as salad that arrived soaked in dressing and of course, soggy. I ordered one of the specials for the evening, Osso Buco. It turned out to be a large smoked ham hock that tasted exactly like a ham hock....no Osso Buco I ever tasted. Dishes there tend to be mostly meat and starch, nothing very special."

  • "This was a great find. The opah I ordered was delicate and buttery. My wife ordered the pork chop and it was tender and moist. The only downside is it was a bit loud because of the crowd at the bar. That said, I would go back."

  • "I miss the old space. This new space - they really missed the mark - I felt like I was in a diner instead of the cozy restaurant it used to be. Someone needs to rethink the design of the place inside and warm up the atmosphere in there - a steak we ordered medium came out rare - the staff was very friendly and efficient however and took care of the problem and apologized - food is good , just wish the experience (atmosphere) was better"

  • "Terrific food (refined without being fussy), fantastic waitstaff. Better than ever. But oh how noisy it is in the new/current location - all hard surfaces, echoes, loud - even a dropped fork on the floor at the other end of the large space sounded like a big crash. And the a/c is on way too high - reminds me of a/c in HK or Singapore. So the current environment makes it best for an energetic group or family - not for an intimate meal for a couple."

  • "Went to Easter night. We were very tired and hungry. The man at reception welcomed us with warm smile and that soothed us immediately. We had the Easter Dinner 3 course with house cured ham, Pea salad, au gratin and Purple potato tart. They were just amazing and completed our Easter night. I made my next reservation already for a dinner with my out-of-towner friends."

  • "Returned to my original home of HI from Seattle for a brief family vacation. This restaurant was recommended by a family member of one of the managers and I also checked with some of my local friends and family before going. Went for dinner just the wife and I and the atmosphere and ambiance was nice. Good food and good quality livestock from great places like Shinsato Farms. All in all good experience. Had the ahi bruschetta appetizer and rib eye main dish. Being a part time commercial fisherman and fish snob, the ahi appetizer was okay(wife loved it though). Steak was awesome. Wife said would've loved it more if it was accompanied by a small amount of fresh greens of some type.(I agree). Glad we stopped in. Mahalo."
